Academics Urge Gov’t to Clarify ‘Settlements’ Misnomer

Academics at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center held a discussion yesterday about the academic boycott against Israel at the initiative of Professors for a Strong Israel.

During the hearing, experts called on Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely (Likud) to deepen public awareness of the legality of communities over the 1949Armistice lines in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, as well as in the Golan Heights – efforts which have not been launched until now.

The speakers, Prof. Elisha Haas and Dr. Ronen Shoval, believe that Hotovely must formulate an organized legal argumentation regarding the legality of Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria.

Prof. Elisha Haas mentioned the case of Horizon 2020, a major project to fund scientific research. In 2014, Israel had objected to EU guidelines in the project banning funding and financial dealings with Jewish businesses and communities in Judea, Samaria and parts of Jerusalem, and requiring Israel to declare that those areas were not part of the State of Israel. The EU was accused of hypocrisy over the guidelines, with some Israeli officials and commentators pointing out that no such guidelines exist in relation to other disputed regions such as Turkish-occupied Cyprus and Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara.

The speakers at the conference noted that the diplomatic corps and the Israeli government refrained from including information on the subject of “illegal settlements” and explaining the situation.

The Levy Report of 2012 proved conclusively that the Jewish presence in Judea and Samaria is legal according to international law, but despite the report being commissioned by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s government it has yet to be adopted.

Academics are now demanding that Israel issue a formal response to EU bias on the issue.

Prof. Haas said, “Europe is crying out for scientific cooperation and yet they reject us, for what reason? Allegations of ‘illegal settlements.’ The Europeanshave not heard that settlements in the Land of Israel are perfectly legal under international law, because Israel does not talk about it.”

“So I turn to the Deputy Minister Hotovely: somewhere in the archives of theForeign Ministry there is material explaining the legality of the ‘settlements’,” he added. “It’s time for simple legal reasoning in terms of international law.”

  1. It is about time to put an end to world abject hypocrisy. That of course will enrage even more the antisemites. Let them get a stroke.

  2. @ babushka:
Feinstein is a gentile who married a Jewish guy. Whether she went through some sort of “conversion” or not, I do not recognize it. She was a lightweight who happened upon the scene, as I recall in San Francisco after the famous murder of Harvey Milk. Boxer is even worse and she is, Jewish. Oren writes of having to distance the phone from his ear during a “…how dare you insult the president “,, rant. I just saw her in her automobile , a nice new white Mercedes, staring at me and trying to get my attention, because , I assumed, she liked the way I looked in my grandfather’s 50 year old hat. Seems like
    they will never term out.
Give Hotolevy some time and breAthing space and she will get to these issues and much more. It was good that the academics are demanding action and she is the one to give it to them. No pun at all intended. When OBAMA is gone and we have an actual friend playing POTUS, changes can happen fast and one of them is the above.

  3. Hotovely is a strong, tough, gorgeous, unapologetic Jewish woman. She makes me feel proud, just as the self-haters make me feel disgraced. I should not confer such emotional power upon them, but when I see a kapo like Dianne Feinstein disparaging precious Israel I experience shame and yearn to go Billy Jack on her sorry liberal ass.

  4. on the other hand, it is an unwritten principle in litigation to commit to nothing until the matter is in court
It should be enough to state, that Jewish settlement in YS is prescribed in LON mandate to be encouraged and that as the current administrator of the territory it is incumbent on Israel NOT to obstruct that which was agreed in international law. do not confuse jewish settlement with Israeli settlement as that is what defamers latch onto.
