Jordan: Moving American embassy to Jerusalem is a ‘red line’

T. Belman. Trump has to stop the US from dancing to the Arab tune. What better placer to start than here.

Jordan’s Information Minister says there will be “catastrophic” repercussions if Trump indeed moves the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

Jordan’s government spokesman warned on Thursday of “catastrophic” repercussions if President-elect Donald Trump follows through with his campaign pledge to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Trump repeatedly promised during the campaign to move the embassy if elected. His campaign manager Kellyanne Conway indicated last month that moving the embassy to Jerusalem “is a very big priority” for Trump, while media reports in Israel at the time indicated the transition team for Trump is already looking into possible locations in Jerusalem for the embassy.

But, speaking Thursday with The Associated Press, Jordan’s Information Minister Mohammed Momani warned such a move could affect relations between the U.S. and regional allies, including Jordan.

He stressed that moving the embassy move would be a “red line” for Jordan, would “inflame the Islamic and Arab streets” and serve as a “gift to extremists.”

Momani also said that Jordan would use all possible political and diplomatic means to try and prevent such a decision.

Moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem “will have catastrophic implications on several levels, including the regional situation,” Momani told AP, adding countries in the region would likely “think about different things and steps they should take in order to stop this from happening.”

“It will definitely affect the bilateral relationship between countries in the region, including Jordan, and the parties that will be related to such a decision,” he stressed.

The possible move of the American embassy has been met with anger from Palestinian Authority (PA) officials, who demand that eastern Jerusalem be the capital of a future Palestinian state.

This week, PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas warned of “serious implications” if the embassy is moved, saying, “Moving the embassy will have serious consequences not only for the Palestinian people, but also for the legitimacy of the entire international struggle against the occupation.”

Saeb Erekat, the secretary general of the PLO, threatened last week that if the United States moves its embassy to Jerusalem, the Palestinians will demand that Arab countries expel U.S. ambassadors from their capitals.

He also warned that the Palestinian will take steps against Israel, such as reducing security and economic coordination as well as consider backtracking on its recognition of Israel.

Erekat has previously warned that moving the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem would “destroy the prospects of peace”.

  1. The last ones we need to hear from are the Jordanians who went to war in ’67 after being warned to stay out and nothing would be taken from them, who for 20 years didn’t allow Jews to go to the Kosel, who desecrated the graves on Har Hazeisim, and stole tombstones and built houses and used them for latrines. they are the ones that should be forwarned if they try anything that would affect the United States or Israel. Let them worry about what ISIS does and did to their pilot.

Mexico !!!!!!! have you ever been in the real Mexico????

  4. The American Embassy should be moved to Jerusalem the capital of the Sovereign Jewish Nation of Israel.

Jordan should be thankful it has a good neighbor Israel.

The King should be more worried about the disaster in Syria brought about the Russians, Iran, Isis and the Assad govt.

How about the world ceasing aid to the Palestinians(controlled by Hamas proxy of Iran) it only fuels terrorism.

A— the Kingdom would not last long with out our support and protection..

B- with or without the move of the embassy to Jerusalem let me say that we have gotten used to the status quo and today it has less meaning and relevance to most Israelis then a generation ago.

Every foreign leader including Arab leaders come to Jerusalem to the Capital of Israel to meet with our leaders etc. That is de facto recognition.

C- Israel should annex The whole of Y&S (West Bank)By: withdrawing our support and protection of the “Little King” and letting Hamas topple them. It will happen sooner or later anyway so we should at least help to control the timing and circumstances. If the World were to complain that Israel’s possession of Judea, Samaria, and the eastern portion of Jerusalem, even if lawful, nevertheless deprives the “Palestinian” Arab population thereof of a separate independent homeland, then the World should be reminded that the modern State of Jordan (its precursor having been rendered Judenrein by the British Mandatory authorities in 1922) — constituting 77% of former Mandatory Palestine and, in consequence thereof, overwhelmingly comprised of a “Palestinian” Arab population — is already that separate independent homeland.

Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas admitted as much when, after his meeting with Jordanian Prince Ali Bin al-Hussein on June 2, 2015, he declared, in part:

“This is a friendly meeting between Jordan and Palestine, which will continue to be as they have been: one people in two countries.” (reported in the Britain-based and Saudi-owned “Asharq al-Awsat” newspaper, June 2, 2015)

  6. All these threats to Trump if he stays true to past from are not reading him well at all.

You tell Trump you will not do that and he answers just watch me.

The Palestinians have said if he moves the US Embassy it will be war.

Stupid in both cases. One with the stroke of a pen he cuts off their aid. Does Jordan need the USA or does the USA need Jordan?

These idiots always play with fire and get burned over and over.

  7. ” Jordan’s Information Minister Mohammed Momani warned such a move could affect relations between the U.S. and regional allies, including Jordan.”

Mormoni must say this. So must the king. This should not delay or hinder what should be an immediate move. The thing to do is to lay down many more potential moves such as cutting Jordanian funding, etc. You lay down a lot of items that you don’t plan to finish, then in the negotiations you withdraw many of them leaving the Jordanians with a paper victory.

The point is to get 100% of what you really want but create a score system that allows them to announce to the masses that they ended up victorious.

Have you noticed that muslim countries are 50% threats, and 50% bluff?. It’s time to cover their bluff and punch their hot air baloon.
When they threat, don’t act; when they act friendly, watch it! the stab is coming.

I agree absolutely! The arabic word for lies and deception is taqiyaa! The PA has been using taqiyaa all along. They have absolutely no interest in peace. They want Israel totally dismantled. Islam teaches that Allah gave that whole area (including Israel) to Islami and to his descendants. Hence, all Muslims even the so-called moderate Muslims say that Israel has no right to exist!
    The cause is Islam.

We need to study carefully the canonical texts of Islam – the Quran, the hadiths and the Sira – to know this! Islam is inherently violent, aggressive and supremacist because it’s founder, Prophet Muhammad was violent and evil. He’s the role model for all Muslims.

  9. It all started at the “72 Munich Olympic and for the last 44 years the West in particular has given into Islamofascist blackmail while keeping their antisemitism alive & well. Hopefully Trump will put an END to these two diseases!

Perhaps this announcement about embassy move to Jerusalem was to keep THAT news, only reported by Vanity Fair so far, out of Jordan’s media.

P.S. Tell the PA the architects for the US consulate at 18 Agron Road Jerusalem 9419003 also design housing in ‘settlements’

  11. Does anyone really want to start trying to punish the US? The Arabs need to rather be afraid of the US than the other way around.

Aii the threats, catastrophes, disasters, and the usual collection of ragged doom to descend on …..whom….seemingly the whole human race, is nothing more than the normal Arab way of pursuing their diplomatic “exercises”-the exercise being given to their tongues.

As a recent infamous quote says….”what difference does it make”….. They have have already been doing it for many years, as soon as they were ALLOWED by the foolish West to raise their heads from their somnabulistic relationship with their sand pillows.

All the warnings of great statesmen of the past, like Winston Churchill were ignored by…of course, ignoramuses.

So we have now what we have.and have been dealing with it for the past 60-70 years already. Those countries which believed that “it can’t happen to us, we give them support and large hunks of cash”…. are rethinking their positions, having been included in the general devastations visited on Europe as a whole.

We, Israel, should uncrease our deterrents and pressure the Arabim in our neighbourhood out of existence altogether.

My position on this is well known by all on this site and to others who discuss it with me.

I wish I had been in charge of the last Lebanon War.

  14. Jordan needs USA? I think USA without Jordan is just fine!

Jordan is playing a dangerous game with Israel. This could blow up their face in a number of ways.

  15. “But, speaking Thursday with The Associated Press, Jordan’s Information Minister Mohammed Momani warned such a move could affect relations between the U.S. and regional allies, including Jordan.”

Uh Yes – that’s the idea: way past time to affect relations so that the Arab world’s reliance on threats and bluster and violence will no longer play in its favour. Time the Arabs knew their place. They may be dictators in their neighbourhood but need to be taught that they can’t dictate to the rest of the world.

  16. This is what Israel gets as thanks from Jordan for saving it from the PLO.The Jordanian mouse has roared. Take to the bunkers.

  17. Have you noticed that muslim countries are 50% threats, and 50% bluff?. It’s time to cover their bluff and punch their hot air baloon.
