Netanyahu Seeking to Bury Bill Legalizing Israeli Landgrab of Private Palestinian Lands

T. Belman. I warned that this would happen after Amona II is demolished. This coupled with the resolution of Congress that Netanyahu and AIPAC fought for, to counter 2334, will convince anyone that Netanyahu is committed to achieving a TSS not much different from from what the international community wants. He must go.

Prime minister voted in favor of bill in first reading, but sources say he intends to keep it in limbo due to implications on Israel’s diplomatic standing.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is working to bury the proposed law to legalize the construction of settlements on private Palestinian land in the West Bank. The bill has already passed its first reading the Knesset, but Netanyahu has no intention of allowing it to advance any further. For now, the bill will be frozen and Netanyahu does not intend to set a date for a vote, sources close to the prime minister told Haaretz.

Netanyahu opposed the law from the beginning because of the implications on Israel’s diplomatic standing in the world, but voted in favor of the law after Education Minister Naftali Bennett succeeded in having the Ministerial Committee on Legislation back the bill, with the support of the Likud ministers on the committee.

After passing its first reading, the bill is now stuck in the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, which would have to approve the bill before it could return to the Knesset plenum for its second and third readings. So far, all the votes in the committee on the proposed law have been put off.

Originally it was agreed with Bennett that the bill would advance only after Donald Trump is sworn in as the new president of the United States. But after the passage of the United Nations Security Council Resolution on the settlements, which was partially attributed by Security Council members to the so-called “regularization bill,” Netanyahu had second thoughts about the bill.

On Monday, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said at a meeting of Yisrael Beiteinu Knesset members that “it seems the law will not be passed.”

In a briefing for the press, coalition whip MK David Bitan (Likud) said the goal is to find a legal solution for the settlements, and if such a solution is found then the bill will be made superfluous.

If the bill is not passed in the next few months, the ball will then be in Bennett’s court – which would be a good thing for him regardless of what happens. If the bill does pass in the end, Bennett will certainly take credit for it; while if it does not pass Bennett can use that against Netanyahu in the next election campaign to emphasize the differences between himself and the Likud leader.

Bennett is the only major politician talking for annexation and settlement with Hotovely and Shaked of the same party. I would vote for that party. If they had to share again with likud and had more seats they could demand a greater role in the major stuff.

They have absolutely no real power unless they are willing to carry thru with threats of bringing government down. Never happen!!! They brought BB down in his first term over Why Plantation agreement and Labor formed the next government and we got OSLO Agreements. BB knows they will never follow thru on threats so he feeds them small victories and manipulates them for awhile till next crisis and does same thing over again and it always works…. Being in government is more important that principles and ideology and all leaders in Israel knew this truth and all play to it so essentially they rule with almost full authority and power even in a diverse government.

BB was also a Champion of settlements and Jewish rights in Y&S before he was elected in 1996. If you are competing and attacking BB from the right of Likud your natural base is the settlements. Surprising that even with BB’s negative policies he and the Likud are as popular with residents in E Jerusalem and Y&S. Jerusalem is a major Likud and BB stronghold…. Even Peres did more for the residents and movement than BB has.

What I have never seen here in any articles or comments is that over 40% of all working Israelis work for some level of official Government and even the rabbis that control thinking and behavior of religious resident’s in Y&S are paid salaries and are supported by government….. Those stats explain to some degree Israeli behavior that seems unfathomable to outsiders.

I’m probably the last person in the world you would expect to hear this from but except for those of us within the diplomatic inner loop whose work is cut out for them in these mined waters, for the next nine days, the most constructive thing any of us could do is pray. In whatever way is meaningful to you.

I guess the old saying is true: “There are no atheists in the fox hole.”

    and the old joke:

“G*d, if you exist, please help us. And if you don’t exist, please help us anyway.”

It looks to me from the police tapings that damaging info is always being collected and used to blackmail Israel PM’s and getting them to sell out Israel:
    Barak, Olmert, Sharon, BB
foreign intelligence services likely work closely with the Israeli leftists in and out of intel. Perhaps when it is obvious that Israel wants rightists they give them a mole to hold everything in a status quo until they get back the gov.

Bennett should have long ago brought the government down but it’s all a game….

had he done that the new gov would be even further left. the real problem is that Israelis seem to prefer to give away YS beyond the major blocks. Everyone left of bennett are similar in their plan wrt YS.

Bennett is no different than BB, some call him BB (light). Both playing same game of cat and mouse angling for positions that might serve them in the next election and BB trying to keep all his options open. Neither give a damn for the settlements only keeping or achieving the seat of political power….

I dont agree.. I think bennet is much better on the settlements and YS issue. Bennet speaks of specific advancements on those fronts… BB never mentions annexation or settlement as positive. A good sign of that difference is that BB never gav Benett any portfolio relating to those issues both locally or in the diplomatic corps vs the foreigners. BB wanted to give Benett a ministry which would not interfere in any of those issues. I have called him a eunuch because he accepted his position and was suckered into supporting BB. Benett was never in a position to do anything but talk about settlement and annexation

Bennett: We must seize ‘unique opportunity’ of Trump’s first weeks to tell him what Israel wantsWhile Obama left the region ‘on fire,’ incoming president is ‘open to listening’ to Israel, education minister says, backing embassy move and setting his sights on annexing 60% of West Bank
