No Tomahawk Missiles for Ukraine

Peloni:  Mr. Legends of History provides an interesting overview of the period following Trump’s realignment in support of Ukraine’s stated war aims to today when that position was seemingly reversed back towards reality, an acknowledgement of the fact that Ukraine is incapable of gaining its war goals due to its lack of men, morale and munitions.  He also describes the inexplicable interest which Ukraine has affixed to it receiving Tomahawk missiles while having no way in which to launch these missiles.  Ukraine is in an impossible position, not because it lacks Tomahawk missiles or any other US military asset which it might next place its interest in acquiring, but because it has serious deficiencies (see just above) which Ukraine has no means by which to overcome.  Failing to do so will provide for Ukraine’s ultimate defeat in this attritional war, in which Ukrainian victories have proven to be few in number and diminishing in long term importance.  Ukraine should seek a reasonable negotiated settlement, even as this too will prove to be an impossibility as Zelensky’s regime depends upon the extending support from such radical elements in his armed forces as the founder of the notorious Azov.

Major Donations: He has made significant philanthropic contributions to Israel-related causes. In 2017, he donated $16.6 million to the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) to build well-being facilities for soldiers, the largest single gift the organization had received at that time. Oracle’s CEO, Safra Catz, an Israeli-American, has stated that the company’s commitment to Israel is “second to none” and an integral part of its mission.
Media Acquisitions: Through his son David Ellison’s acquisition of Paramount Global, Larry Ellison is seen as expanding his influence over major U.S. media properties (including CBS News), with concerns raised by critics that this will result in a more uniformly pro-Israel media landscape. ” AI overview

    • On the second day of the Trump administration, Mr. Ellison pushed the MRNA platform for use in cancer. A platform which has proven extremely harmful as related to the Covid shots! Are some people not self aware or just sociopathic, Mr. Ellison???!!!

      • The Stargate Project. Do not overlook the importance and danger which this expanded version of the deadly Project Warp Speed poses to the world and to the Jewish people.

Trump’s current position on Ukraine was always going to be the path to peace. Ukraine can’t win, and the US needs its limited arms production for existential threats, and Ukraine’s border is not an American existential interest.

  2. Anyone that thinks,”the most corrupt country” in Europe can or will win a war with Russia must understand this: Russia doesn’t lose wars! If they get overwhelmed they will employ the”Sampson option) in which case the WHOLE world loses! Start from there, those of saner voices!

    • I would say Russia is the most corrupt country in Europe. Putin is the world’s richest oligarch and probably the world’s richest man. How exactly do you think he got to be the world’s richest man? Is he some genius entrepreneur?

      • @Laura

I would say Russia is the most corrupt country in Europe

        .

Putin led his country to economic success over the past twenty years after taking over the country in a state of economic blight. This was a remarkable achievement for someone whom you describe as being the most corrupt individual in the world. He has been the leader of russia over the past more than twenty years, and that is a significant achievement in and of itself. HIs use of lawfare And leveraging opposing factions against one another Is fascinating to watch, but disturbing in the same moment.

The distinction between him and many of his world rivals who are no less respectful of the law and legal norms, including in the US in Britain, in Germany in France and in Ukraine, is that he is good at what he does while the others do appear as helpless amateurs. Importantly, despite the corruption, which is endemic in Russia, it should be noted that Putin is the most liberal leader Russia has ever had in its many centuries of existence. I doubt you could say as much about any other world leader ruling today relative to their own relatively corrupted realms.

No, Putin is not officially the richest man in the world, but estimates from various experts suggest he is one of the wealthiest, with some placing his net worth as high as $200 billion, far exceeding his official salary and declared assets. This wealth is believed to be accumulated through alleged extortion of oligarchs, state funds, and awarding state contracts to allies.
Official vs. estimated wealth: Officially, Putin’s disclosed assets and salary are modest, with an annual salary of around $140,000 and a small apartment and a couple of cars listed as his possessions. However, experts and investigations estimate his true wealth to be in the hundreds of billions of dollars.
Sources of estimated wealth: The sources of this wealth are not public but are thought to include a combination of:
Alleged extortion: Some accounts suggest Putin has strong-armed Russian oligarchs into handing over cash and company shares.
State funds and contracts: It is also believed that he has awarded state contracts and assets to friends and family, who then funnel wealth back to him.
Contradictory information: Putin’s official income and his alleged net worth are in stark contrast, leading to public mystery and speculation about his true financial holdings.”

So, it’s just hostile speculation. Nobody claims to know. And since when is being rich a crime? Zelensky’s regime is far
more repressive, even if he’s only got one or
        two billion.

        • On the other hand, welcome to Standard Island, 😀

Propeller Island (French: L’Île à hélice) (also published as The Floating Island, or The Pearl of the Pacific, and as The Self-Propelled Island) is a science fiction novel by French author Jules Verne (1828–1905). It was first published in 1895 as part of the Voyages Extraordinaires. It relates the adventures of a French string quartet in Milliard City, a city on a massive ship in the Pacific Ocean, inhabited entirely by millionaires.

          Plot
          edit

A French string quartet (Sébastien Zorn, Frascolin, Yvernes and Pinchinat), traveling from San Francisco to their next engagement in San Diego, is diverted to Standard Island.
There is also a comic interlude when they arrive at night and are being ignored after playing good music. So they intentionally play out of tune, getting an immediate response.
Standard Island is an immense man-made island designed to travel the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The wealth of residents of the island can only be measured in millions. The quartet is hired to play a number of concerts for the residents during their tour of the islands (Sandwich, Cook, Society) of the South Pacific.
The island seems an idyllic paradise; however, it is an island pulled between two factions. The left half’s population is led by Jem Tankerdon and is known as the Larboardites. The right half’s population is led by Nat Coverley and is known as the Starboardites.
The company that created the island goes bankrupt, but the rich individuals on board buy it out. And initially they continue to accept the leadership of the man appointed by the company.
Various obstacles encountered on their journey, But things get serious when the original commander is killed, and the two faction leaders each want to succeed. They try to coopt a former king as a compromise candidate, but he refuses. This threatens the future of the island itself.

In October, 1896, Sampson Low (London) published the novel as The Floating Island, or The Pearl of the Pacific, translated by W. J. Gordon, with 80 illustrations. While Gordon was an accomplished translator, boy’s author, and literary figure with an accurate translation of Verne’s The Giant Raft to his credit, the dark social commentary of Propeller Island did not sit well with his publishers, and numerous alterations in the text were made. As Arthur B. Evans notes:
The equivalent of dozens of pages have been cut from this Verne story because they were viewed as being somehow critical of the Americans or the British. Such unacceptable passages included a description of the United States doubling its size by annexing Canada and Central America (I§1), a short blurb making fun of England’s refusal to adopt the metric system (I§5), several very anti-American paragraphs focusing on the colonial history of Hawaii (I§9), a discussion about corrupt British politics (I§13), a few paragraphs concerning the lack of manners of many British citizens (II§1), a lengthy discussion where the British are condemned for introducing snakes onto the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe before handing them over to the French (II§6), and a comical dialogue comparing the British to cannibals (II§9). Sometimes such changes, though distressing, can be inadvertently humorous. In one problematic passage—a long anti-missionary diatribe that the translator apparently decided could not be easily cut from Verne’s narrative—a simple but ingenious solution was found: the nationality of the rapacious cleric was simply changed from British to German (II§1.190).”[2]
Gordon’s translation was also used for the only fully illustrated American edition of the book, published in November 1897 by W. L. Allison. Other publishers were Hurst and Company and the Donahue Brothers.
In 1967 Sidgwick and Jackson (London) published an abbreviated version of the work in the Fitzroy Edition as Propellor Island. In 1990, Keegan Paul (US) republished the Allison edition of The Floating Island without illustrations and with an introduction by Kaori O’Connor.
In 2015, Professor Marie-Thérèse Noiset of the University of North Carolina translated the book complete with the previously excised passages. Unusually, Verne’s original was written in the present tense, but Noiset’s release delivered the story in the past tense, which is the most common narrative time used in the writing of fiction. She explained, “In order for my translation to read smoothly, the Pacific Islands encountered in the novel have been given their present-day names, the measurements given by Verne have been converted from the metric system to the English system, and the narration has been translated into the past tense.”[3] Michael Orthofer critiqued the edition at his Complete Review website, writing that the original was “apparently one of the first examples of a novel written in the third-person and the present tense – yet surely these should count as additional reasons to try to recreate that in English…”[4] Professor Arthur Bruce Evans of DePauw University reviewed the Noiset translation favorably, describing her prose as an example of “[t]he fine art of translating—blending textual faithfulness with discursive fluidity…” Evans noted the “regrettable lack of illustrations” in the 2015 edition, as compared to the Verne octavo which held approximately 80 illustrations by Léon Benett.[5]
