The Altalena was a 1948 French arms ship destined to support the fledgling IDF under the orders of PM Ben Gurion, specifically under the command of Yitzak Rabin, due to the shipment having been arranged with Ben Gurion’s arch enemy, the Irgun’s Menachem Begin.  Presumably, Ben Gurion demanded Begin surrender the ship due to his fears of the Irgun

Notably, the demand for an instantaneous surrender of the arms ship came after an arrangement had already been agreed upon, whereby the Irgun was to be coalesced with the other Israeli forces into one command, with only the Irgun detachment in Jerusalem being kept separate due to its relative successes in facing the Arab Legion and the impossible logistics involved in changing them out.

The loss of this French shipment of arms marked the deadliest intra-Jewish fighting during Israel’s War of Independence. In June 1948, the vessel arrived carrying weapons, military equipment, and Jewish immigrants, including Irgun fighters. The violent standoff resulted in 16 Irgun members and three IDF soldiers killed. Ben-Gurion viewed the incident as affirming the state’s monopoly on force, while the bloodshed spilled that day came at a great cost.  It exposed the attempt by the French to arm the Jewish forces amid an arms embargo that left the Ben Gurion’s armed forces in a state of significant military deficit. As part of what was known as Operation Bid, the Altalena was to be the first of four or five ships containing all manners of military hardware and munitions, as well as 1000 holocaust survivors trained by the French to fight in the war, even as doing so left the French in clear violation of the international embargo on Israel.  So in addition to the 19 lives which were lost that day, Ben Gurion’s treachery left the Israeli forces in a state of complete disparity while facing the modern day British trained, financed, armed and commanded Arab Legion.  It was truly a miracle, and the efforts of Aluf Mickey Marcus, that any part of Jerusalem was held from the intended British-Arab conquest as a result of this debacle.

The Altalena has now been discovered intact at a depth of 503 meters off the Israeli coast, following a complex maritime operation months in the making. Using advanced sensors and mapping systems and a specialized vessel, the wreck’s precise location has been documneted. Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu initiated the expedition, calling it a defining moment for national memory. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir highlighted years of secret efforts culminating in this discovery for historical truth and unity. Officials from Survey of Israel, the national mapping agency involved in locating the wreck of the Altalena, praised the team’s dedication and technology, emphasizing the project’s role in preserving Zionist heritage and uncovering a formative chapter in Israel’s history for future generations.
