Not long ago, I received a lengthy e-mail – “Why We Must Renew Our Commitment to the Civil Rights Movement” – from a woman named Melanie Roth Gorelick, who identified herself as Senior Vice President of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA).

Honestly, I thought it was one of the preposterous spoofs of that satirical publication, The Onion.

But no… it was the real thing.

In short, Ms. Gorelick recommended that Jews concentrate their attention not on the pandemic of anti-Semitism and violent acts against Jews throughout the world and in the United States of America, but instead on those poor oppressed blacks who have never had it better in the good ole U.S.A., thanks to President Trump!

Trump administration officials familiar with American-Israeli relations say the political stalemate in Israel is leading to a significant missed opportunity from Israel’s perspective. The officials further intimate that Israeli leaders need to take into account the unique opportunity provided by the Trump presidency, but refrain from saying so explicitly.

Senior American officials are extremely frustrated over the ongoing political deadlock in Israel. Trump administration officials familiar with American-Israeli relations said in private discussion recently that the political stalemate was leading to a significant missed opportunity from Israel’s perspective.

The officials didn’t expand on the specific steps the administration would currently be taking if there was a government in Israel, but the statements were made in the context of the Middle East peace deal the White House has formulated.

(September 23, 2019 / JNS) Israeli, Jewish and pro-Israel groups all applauded the publication of an ‘unprecedented’ United Nations report on anti-Semitism, that, among other issues, links anti-Semitism to criticism of Israel and the BDS movement.

“This report marks one of the first times the U.N. has addressed the issue of anti-Semitism in any detail,” said Anne Herzberg, Legal Advisor and U.N. Liaison at NGO Monitor. “The Special Rapporteur condemned the use of anti-Semitic tropes and denial of Israel’s right to exist by BDS activists. Importantly, the Rapporteur also recommends the IHRA definition as a useful tool in combating anti-Semitism. Hopefully, U.N. bodies, particularly the Human Rights Council, will follow the Rapporteur’s lead by adopting IHRA and ending their promotion of anti-Semitic tropes and attacks on Israel’s legitimacy.”

The report, “Combatting Antisemitism to Eliminate Discrimination and Intolerance Based on Religion or Belief,” that was released by the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Ahmed Shaheed, defines anti-Semitism as a global phenomenon—not one largely confined to the United States and Europe—as has been the case in many previous U.N. reports. The Special Rapporteur recognizes that the sources of anti-Semitism are varied, coming from the far right, from members of radical Islamist groups and from the political left.

Less than a week after his impressive electoral achievement, the head of the largest Knesset faction, Kahol Lavan leader Benny Gantz, conceded his right to be the first to try and form a coalition government. The explanation given by “party sources” for this concession is that Gantz prefers to wait for Netanyahu to try first and fail.

Regrettably, this lame excuse is unconvincing. This move looks like a capitulation without a fight, an admission that the right wing’s long-standing tactic of delegitimizing parties representing Arab society succeeded. Gantz was apparently worried over being portrayed as someone who “depends on the votes of anti-Zionist, terror-supporting Arab citizens,” as the Joint List is described by right-wing politicians and journalists.

As President Trump feels uncertain about his foreign policy achievements, the U.S. 2020 election is fast approaching.  Trump fears that a military confrontation between the U.S. and Iran will provide his domestic foes with an opportunity to damage his presidential campaign.

Unfortunately for him, the mullahs understand his concerns and goad him to move toward the trap.  Meanwhile, John Bolton’s departure has sent a message to Iran that Trump is neither ready nor able to respond to Tehran’s aggressiveness.

Regarding Iran’s previous misconduct, Trump almost fell into Tehran’s trap by ordering an air strike on Iran.  However, he later shelved the operation, calculating the possible ripple effects of yet another military action abroad on his re-election campaign.

The scare faded as pundits concluded that underneath the chest-thumping, Donald Trump was more chicken than hawk—that for all his “cocked and loaded” bluster, he is ultimately willing to let Iran get away with mayhem in the Gulf and possibly even willing to cut a new deal with Tehran on its terms.

The chorus of reports that Israelis voted for a national unity government belies the continued right-wing predominance among the electorate.

A myth is being spread that Israelis voted on Sept. 17 for a national unity government under Blue and White leader Benny Gantz. That is apocryphal. In a world where, as per an old American aphorism, “figures don’t lie, but liars can figure,” no data could be more revealing than the true numbers of votes cast. Israelis did not vote on Tuesday for a national unity government.

Some 26% voted for the Blue and White party, which promised to end Benjamin Netanyahu’s record-long premiership. Some 5% voted for a near-defunct socialist Labor party that once was the powerhouse of Israeli politics. A bit more than 4% voted for an even more leftist Democratic Union – Meretz with an expanded troika that includes Labor import Stav Shaffir and perhaps the most incompetent and disastrous prime minister in Israel’s history, Ehud Barak. These three parties, comprising the Zionist Center-Left, are what 35% of Israelis wanted.

Likud’s MK BItan suggests rotational power-sharing arrangement that may allow unity government, but contradicts election promises.

Former coalition chairman MK David Bitan (Likud) on Monday morning suggested that the Likud and Blue and White parties join a unity government, with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Blue and White candidate MK Benny Gantz rotating as prime minister, Maariv reported.

In an interview with 103 FM Radio, Bitan said that Gantz is “exaggerating” and “creating spins,” both of which “harm the President and the process of forming a government.”

“At first they wanted to try forming a government first, and then they decided they don’t want to be first,” he explained. “Until yesterday, they didn’t want to remove anyone from the list of those recommending [Gantz]. Gantz created unworthy spins, and he did it with Balad (a faction of the Joint Arab List).”

In the weeks before the elections, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and other senior officials estimated that the so-called “Deal of the Century”, as the US peace plan for Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) has come to be known, will be published very close to election day.

A senior US official told Arutz Sheva on Sunday, however, that the results of the election and the uncertainty they have created in Israel will cause a significant delay in the publication of the plan.

“There is a different situation here and there may be a fundamentally different government than the one we have been working with in recent years. There is also no certainty that the Prime Minister will be the same person who is currently in office. Therefore, further examination of the situation will be required and the publication of the peace plan will be significantly delayed,” said the senior official.

T. Belman. Trump puts great reliance in a strong military as a great deterence. But by not using it, you are nothing more than a paper tiger. Obviously the removal of Bolton underscores his reluctance. But Trump has done nothing to contain Iran other than sanctions.  But so far the sanctions haven’t even tempered Iran’s aggressiveness.

Nevertheless, I don’t think either the US or Israel regrets the concellation of the Iran Deal.

It seems the Saudis, too, may no longer want to risk a conflict with Tehran, especially when Trump’s reservations about a military clash are so clear – and Mideast leaders are busy with problems at home

As is only natural, the coalition talks following the Knesset election are attracting most of the media attention in Israel. And Donald Trump is largely focusing on the complications, of his own creation, after a whistleblower complained about his alleged pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden.

But in between, strategic developments have been occurring in the Middle East; at their foundation is what looks like a major weakening of the pro-American and anti-Iranian alliance. In this too, unsurprisingly, Trump plays an important role.
