Bar’el: Trump’s Revived Jordan-Palestinian Confederation Plan May Be Dead on Arrival

T. Belman. True enough for the old plan. But though the idea was raised, the old plan was never considered.  I think that as soon as Zahran takes over Jordan, Jordan with its present boundries will devour the PA. I am talking about the Jordan R remaining the agreed to border. He will also change the national identity of Jordan from Jordanian to Palestinian.

As for the PA, who cares what they think or say. If they try to mount a new intifadah, it will only speed their demise.

The Palestinians refuse to give up their aspirations for independence, Israel is waging a war on the idea of an independent Palestinian state, and Jordan fears losing its national identity

In the early ‘80s, King Hussein and Yasser Arafat had a plan to create a confederation between Jordan and the West Bank, after Israel would withdraw to the 1967 border and without either member of the confederation recognizing Israel. Most of the plan was accepted but later abandoned, largely due to a disagreement over the division of responsibilities and the status of each component.

Can Netanyahu and Trump Downgrade the Palestinian Issue for Good?

T. Belman. This essentially is the Jordan Option as proposed by Mudar Zahran and me at our conference last October in the Begin Center. It appears that we have succeeded in making it a reality. All that is left is for the King to abdicate and for Zahran to take power. Stay tuned.

In line with Netanyahu’s vision, the Trump administration is steadily dismantling the orthodoxies that have underpinned the so-called Israeli-Palestinian ‘peace process’ for decades

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had a fascinating revelation for his guests during a meeting with an Israeli delegation on Sunday afternoon. U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys, Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt, had inquired whether Abbas was prepared to consider a confederation with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

The Death Blow Is Coming for Syrian Democracy

The Assad regime’s imminent assault on Idlib will empower jihadists and crush the last of the revolution’s democrats. Why is the world standing by?

The Syrian regime is determined to reconquer all of the territory it has lost. Aided by Russian bombers and Iranian troops, and emboldened by its success in terrorizing the populations of Ghouta and Daraa into submission, President Bashar al-Assad’s government is now preparing to attack Idlib, the last remaining province outside of his control. Idlib is home to some three million people, about half of them displaced, or forcibly evacuated, to the province from elsewhere. Many are crowded into unsanitary camps or sleeping in the open.

Finally, Ballistic Missiles for the Israel Defense Forces

A new order by the military reflects a major change in the IDF’s future tactics against enemies like Hezbollah

By Moshe Arens, HAARETZ

File photo: Rocket test by Israel’s Military Industry.IMI

As defense minister, over 19 years ago, I called into my office the representatives of Israel’s defense industries who had mastered ballistic-missile technology and asked them to submit competitive bids for the supply of medium-range ballistic rockets for the Israel Defense Forces. Until then Israel’s response to the large arsenal of ballistic rockets deployed by Hezbollah in Lebanon had been the capability of Israeli aircraft to bomb targets in Lebanon. Bombers were Israel’s answer to rockets.

Trump offered Palestinian-Jordanian ‘confederation’

T. Belman. The significance of this offer by Tramp is that more and more he is making Jordan part of the solution. He is getting the world ready for it. He knows that both Abbas and Abdullah have turned down confederation.

PA chief US team preparing Mideast peace plan offered him ‘confederation’ between PA-Jordan. ‘Only if Israel included’, Abbas replied.

By David Rosenberg, INN

The Trump administration offered a plan to the Palestinian Authority for a final status agreement with Israel which would include the establishment of a “confederation” between the PA and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, PA chief Mahmoud Abbas claimed in talks with the left-wing Peace Now organization.

According to sources within Peace Now on Sunday, representatives of the Trump administration, including President Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner, and special envoy Jason Greenblatt, recently asked Abbas if he would accept a final status agreement which included a confederation between the Kingdom of Jordan and the Palestinian Authority.

Israel strikes airbase near Damascus, Arab media reports

Reports say Israeli strike caused five explosions, unknown number of casualties at Mezzeh airbase near Syrian capital, considered strategic Syrian asset • Syrian state media denies explosions were caused by “Israeli aggression,” cites electrical failure.

Israel Hayom Staff

A series of five explosions that rocked the Mezzeh airbase southwest of Damascus late Saturday night was caused by an Israeli airstrike, Arab media reported on Sunday.

Several reports said the strike had caused an unknown number of casualties, while others said Syrian air defenses countered the strike.

The U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said an Israeli airstrike had caused an unknown number of deaths and injuries.

According to Arab social media, Maher Assad, the younger brother of Syrian President Bashar Assad, was wounded in the strike and an unnamed Iranian general was killed.

Maher Assad, 50, is considered the second most powerful man in Syria. He is the commander of the Republican Guard and the Syrian army’s elite 4th Armored Division.

The reports were not corroborated by any Israeli source. A military spokesperson said the IDF does not comment on foreign media reports.

State-run Al-Ikhbariya TV station showed what appeared to be footage shot by residents of a string of bright explosions lighting up the night sky.

Citing an unnamed military source, the station reported that the explosions did not come from inside the airport but from a nearby munitions depot.

Smoke rises over the Mezzeh Airbase, Saturday

One resident told the BBC that the explosions lit up the night’s sky, saying, “It felt like the sun was shining for five minutes.”

Syrian state media denied the explosions were caused by an Israeli raid, saying they were the result of an electrical failure in one of the base’s munitions dumps.

The Syrian Arab News Agency quoted a senior military source as saying, “Mezzeh airbase has not been exposed to any Israeli aggression.”

The airbase houses elite Syrian units, Iranian troops and Revolutionary Guards-backed Shiite militias, and is considered a strategic Syrian asset. It was targeted by U.S.-led coalition forces in April in retaliation for a deadly chemical attack the Syrian army carried out in  Douma, in eastern Ghouta, earlier that month.

Israel rarely acknowledges strikes inside Syria but has consistently pledged to use military action to prevent weapons transfers to its enemies. Israel is alarmed by the expansion of operations by Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah to support President Bashar Assad in Syria’s seven-year-long civil war.

The blasts come at a tense time, as Syrian government forces prepare to attack the last refuge of the opposition in the northwest of the country. The U.S. is warning Damascus against using chemical weapons in the battle, while Damascus claims the U.S. is preparing to falsify a chemical attack to justify military operations on Syria.

Physicians, Heal Thyselves

Review of ‘To Heal the World?’ by Jonathan Neumann

By Evelyn Gordon, COMMENTARY
It’s no secret that many liberal Jews today view tikkun olam, the Hebrew phrase for “repairing the world,” as the essence of Judaism. In To Heal the World?, Jonathan Neumann begs to differ, emphatically. He views liberal Judaism’s love affair with tikkun olam as the story of “How the Jewish Left Corrupts Judaism and Endangers Israel.” In fact, he believes tikkun olamendangers Judaism itself. Anyone who considers such notions wildly over the top should make sure to read Neumann’s book—because one needn’t agree with everything he says to realize that his major concerns are disturbingly well-founded.

Analysis Scarred by Previous Wars, Israeli Army’s Ground Forces Struggle to Keep Up

On Thursday, June 12, 2014, the members of the IDF General Staff gathered for an evening of “team-building” in the Kirya headquarters in Tel Aviv. The General Staff forum, headed by then-Chief of Staff Benny Gantz, heard to a lecture by Prof. Yoram Yovell titled “Between Body and Soul.”

Later that night, after the generals had all gone home, the IDF received the first report, still vague, about an incident in theWest Bank. The picture became clear only the next morning. Three youths, yeshiva students in Gush Etzion, were hitchhiking and were picked up by a car driven by Palestinians masquerading as Israelis. The youths, whose bodies were found weeks later west of Hebron, were murdered by the kidnappers, members of a Hamas cell from Hebron.

FDD’s Clifford May interviewed Amb Nikki Haley

Foundation For Defense Of Democracies:
Presentation Of The Jeane J. Kirkpatrick Award
to U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley

[..]

HALEY: This is very kind, thank you.

Thank you all for being here and thank you to FDD for this amazing honor. I will tell you that FDD has been such a partner. Whether it is us dealing with the Iran deal and the flaws that were in it, all the way to human shields and all the things that we need to do to combat it, you’ve been a partner in a time where we need partners. And so I appreciate that very much.

I did not know Jeane Kirkpatrick, but I try and channel her many times when I’m fighting with Russia. So she sometimes responds to me and sometimes not, but I will tell you this: what I love about Jeane Kirkpatrick and what I see in the similarities about both of us was we both fought — fight for freedom and we love defending America. It’s a pleasure and an honor to defend a country you just love so much.

Iran launches anti-US-Israel front – from W. Iraq, with Tel Aviv in missile range, builds base facing Golan

DEBKA

Russia, Iran, Syria and Hamas have launched six steps to counter the US-Israeli plan to hit Iranian military targets in Syria, which National Security Adviser John Bolton finalized in Jerusalem two weeks ago. That plan is to strike Iran’s Al Qods Brigades and allied Shiite militia forces in Syrian and western Iraq, as DEBKAfile’s military and intelligence sources were first to reveal. The US and Israel agreed to provide each other with reciprocal air and military cover for their operations in Syria. This accord was first implemented on Aug. 23, when unidentified warplanes bombed a pro-Iranian Iraqi Shiite Khataib Hezballah convoy on the Syrian-Iraqi highway.

Sacrificing Israel’s long-term interests for short-term gains

By Evelyn Gordon

With the Trump Administration reportedly planning various steps against UNRWA—the U.N. aid agency devoted solely to Palestinian refugees—Israeli defense officials have leaped to UNRWA’s defense. A rapid cutback of U.S. funding would create a vacuum in basic services, especially in Gaza, that Hamas might fill, and could even spark violence, they warned.

But their argument is wrong on at least three counts. First, U.S. cutbacks won’t actually cause a financial crisis. Second, forcing Hamas to provide basic services in UNRWA’s stead would be a plus, not a minus. Third, their policy would sacrifice long-term strategic interests for minuscule tactical gains.

As I’ve written before, I’d support plunging UNRWA into financial crisis, since that might force it to reform. But Washington can’t cut its donations much more than it already has—from $360 million last year to just $60 million this year. And judging by the results, it hasn’t caused a crisis at all.

Jordan’s King Threatening Mudar Zahran’s Family Again

Zahran’s mother called him from Jordan earlier today. According to her, Zahran’s 73 year old father who suffers from Parkinson’s disease was stopped at the airport when he was leaving Amman on a private trip.

He was stopped by the king’s royal intelligence office at the airport, interrogated for an hour before he was allowed to board the plane, the intimidation revolves around his son, Mudar,

There is an alternative to UNRWA.

T. Belman. Once again there is a Plan B namely Jordan. UNRWA will be terminated with everyone’s consent as soon as  Zahran takes over Jordan and undertakes to replace UNRWA.

As the U.S. slashes funds to UNRWA, Israel and Saudi Arabia are keeping it afloat • Researcher Adi Schwartz and Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely warn that by not confronting the Palestinian refugee narrative, Israel is putting itself at risk.

By Nadav Shragai, ISRAEL HAYOM

The Israeli defense establishment is the strongest advocate for the U.N. Relief and Works Agency in the country. In the U.S., UNRWA’s strongest lobbyist is Saudi Arabia. In recent months, both the Israeli defense and security apparatus and Saudi Arabia have been working, separately and uncoordinated, on behalf of a shared interest: stopping the Trump administration’s attacks on the organization.

Reports from the U.S. that the $200 million cut to American aid to UNRWA is only the beginning not only shook up the organization itself, they also came as a shock to the Office of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, Israel’s main opponent to any punitive measures against the U.N. entity, as well as the Saudi royal family, which is the third-largest donor to UNRWA.

The F-35 Stealth Fighter vs Russia’s S-300 Anti-Aircraft System

By S. Fred Singer, AMERICAN THINKER

As an avid reader of Aviation Week, I became interested in the F-35, the newest Department of Defense fighter plane. The DOD had sold nine initial units to our ally Israel. I thought it was a wise decision for three reasons:

1. It provided actual testing for the new aircraft under realistic battle conditions. Aviation Week noted that Israel used several of its F-35s to attack more than 50 Iranian military installations in Syria. All these were presumably protected by the Russian-built Anti-Aircraft system S-300. Their latest design with more powerful radars, is being sold worldwide.  Israel had a chance to study an earlier version, sold to Cyprus.

The F-35 attack was completed in less than 90 minutes, a notable achievement in military intelligence, as well as in operational planning and coordination.

Countdown to Civil War

By Linda Goudsmit, PUNDICITY

On January 26, 2018 Daniel Greenfield gave a brilliant speech in South Carolina in which he argued that politics make civil wars – not guns. “Guns are how a civil war ends. Politics is how it begins.” What does that mean?

“Two or more sides disagree on who runs the country. And they can’t settle the question through elections because they don’t even agree that elections are how you decide who’s in charge. That’s the basic issue here. Who decides who runs the country? When you hate each other but accept the election results, you have a country. When you stop accepting election results, you have a countdown to a civil war.”

This is no small thing. The United States of America has distinguished itself by the peaceful transfer of power through elections for 242 years. Opposing parties compete in an election – one side wins and the other loses. The country reunites after the election in support of the office of the President and competes again four years later.

West Bank Power Struggle Could Be Opportunity for Hamas or Trump

T. Belman. The Yiddish expression “Man trachs (plans), God lachs (laughs)” seems to apply here. As I have said many times before, Trump always has a Plan B. It is clear that, in progressive steps, Trump has been destabelizing the Arab-Israeli conflict. He has taken on the UNHRC, the peace process, the PA and UNRWA. He has rejected the Iran Deal, NAFTA, the TPP and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Thus he has demolished the institutions and agreements he inherited, making room for his vision and priorities. He is, as they say, a transformational president.

Trump is not about to let the crises which develops go to waste. Trump is a master builder. As such he often has to demolish current structures before rebuilding. I get the feeling that his moves are building to a crescendo. Stay tuned. It seems to me that he is executing his Deal of the Century before he tables it.

By Yaakov Lappin, Special to IPT News

As Fatah party contenders who hope to succeed Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas reportedly arm themselves ahead of a looming power struggle, Fatah’s arch rival, Hamas, is making its own preparations to dominate the West Bank.

The fundamentalist Islamist movement has already established a de facto state and terrorist army in the Gaza Strip, where it works day and night to spread terrorism and instability to the Fatah-ruled West Bank.

Dick Morris: The EU’s Struggle Against US Sanctions on Iran Is Futile

By Dick Morris, WESTERN JOURNAL August 30, 2018

President Donald Trump’s new sanctions on Iran are meeting fierce opposition from the European Union — and there’s not a damn thing Brussels can do about them.

With the U.S. unilaterally re-imposing economic sanctions on Teheran, the EU has passed a “blocking statute” that “forbids EU persons from complying with the (Iran) sanctions” and promises to help European businesses and financial institutions recover damages due to the sanctions.
