Don’t underestimate Egyptian hatred of Israel

Democracy or Jew-Hatred? More Evidence of Anti-Semitism at the Egypt Protests

There is massive evidence to be found in the Western media of anti-Semitism and “anti-Zionism” at the Egypt protests. But images in the flickr streams of amateur local photographers are even more shocking and unambiguous.
February 7, 2011 – by John Rosenthal

In response to my PJM article documenting anti-Semitic imagery at the Egyptian protests, I’ve received several comments — both in public and in private — suggesting that, nevertheless, anti-Semitic and/or “anti-Zionist” sentiment among the protestors has played only a marginal role. The assurances to this effect are typically based on the first-hand accounts of Western observers or English-speaking participants with Western contacts. These accounts are supposed somehow to trump the clear pictorial evidence to the contrary.

The appearance of anti-Semitic and/or “anti-Zionist” motifs in the photos and videos of the protests is, however, simply too widespread and systematic for such assurances to reassure. Such images are to be found in video and photographic material from virtually every major Western news organization present in Egypt. This fact is all the more significant when one considers that the reports published or broadcast by these very same news organizations have as a rule outright ignored any anti-Semitic or anti-Israeli sentiment among the protestors. Indeed, as will be seen below, even more outrageous images figure prominently in the flickr streams of amateur local photographers.

Herewith further evidence.

(Imago Photo; source: Tagesspiegel)

(Keystone/AP photo; source: Tagesanzeiger)

The below image is a rarely seen Reuters photo. According to the Reuters photo description, it shows the effigy of Hosni Mubarak that was famously hanged in Tahrir Square last Tuesday. Most of the photos of the hanging effigy that have appeared in the media consist of long-distance shots from behind. This close-up of the front of the effigy clearly reveals the Star of David painted on its tie. Note too the American dollars sticking out of one of its pockets. As shown in my last article, the effigy of Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman, which was also abused by protestors, likewise had a Star of David drawn on its tie.

(Reuters Photo: source: Hashem Studios Board)

The above photo and the second photo in the preceding series were both found on an English-language pro-protester/anti-Mubarak discussion forum named the Hashem Studios Board. The thread from which they are taken is titled “The Egyptian Revolution.” The thread is replete with anti-Israeli vitriol.

Such vitriol includes comments like “Israel after we are done with Mubarak, we will come for you!!!” In response to the sarcastic question “Whats a pro mubarak protester?,” another commentator replies, “Yeah good question, does he look like this….,” and posts the following cartoon.

Protestors interviewed by CNN’s Nick Robertson during the first week of demonstrations unleashed a remarkably similar torrent of hatred toward Israel and the United States. “He supporting Israel, Israel is our enemy, we hate him!” one female protestor screamed as regards Mubarak. And then she screamed some more: “Israel and America supported him, we hate them all!”

  1. 1. mubarak has cancer – even if he refused to go he would die any way – but it is obvious that he has to go, and i guess he will be put on trial and executed BEFORE the cancer finishes him

    2. how comes a man of 82 has such black hair (the same thing i asked my self with regard to ben ali)

  2. But, as I said before, the last 30 years certainly beat the previous 33 regarding the Egypt/Israel border. So Laura was right in that as bad as he was, he was at least better for Israel than his predecessors.

I few points: A- You make assumptions that without peace agreement that there would have been a different result. I maintain that Egypt was in no condition to make war and would not have in any event. B- we would have strengthened our presence and control over Sinai in those thirty years making any return mute. B= The over billion dollars per ye we spent for 30 years on oil and gas imports would have been saved had we kept Sinai.
C_ Instead of the treaty with Egypt reducing our defense expenditures they have increased with the treaty exponentially. D- While Israel began receiving military aid as per Camp David agreements since 82′ Egypt received a comparable package and have built their military near or at parity with Israel at least on paper.

We will face in the years to come an Egypt strengthened to the point that they are Israels most dangerous and dedicated existential enemy.

Unlike Israel Egypt have purchased weapons from other sources other than America and they have an order for 62 of the latest Russian migs on order now. American aid to Egypt have freed up same relative amt for Egypt to use to purchase arms from other countries.

Mubarak did everything except to declare war on us to hurt is internationally and finally his support for Hamas against us is no different than Syria aiding Hezbollah.

With a less than friendly Egypt Israel can now do what they have ignored for the last thirty years. Prepare for the next war with Egypt. For us an Islamic takeover or a less friendly regime in Egypt is forcing Israel to wake up from their 30 yr. stupor and it’s a race of catch up now and it will be an expensive proposition. Our whole order of battle and doctrine will dictate a major upgrade and transformation of our military doctrine. It will influence I think positively on preeminence of peace process to a back-burner priority, at least for us.

All in all I think considering it’s the best thing that could have happened for Israel coming sooner than expected rather than Later when we will face a nuclear Egypt.

America has been the facilitator of Egypt’s build up and if it continues a major enabler of the next war.

  3. I agree with Yamit that all peace treaties are tenuous and that those that make them, even if with the best of intentions, are gone one day and new “young turks” with different ideas take their place. The people who created the Versaille treaty were a much different lot than those who
determined Germany’s and Japan’s fate after WWII. There is a huge difference in bargaining power when you win an armistice, a ceceasement of hostilities, as opposed to when the other side completely capitulates. We did the best we could with what we had to work with….not only beating our enemy, but doing it in spite of the world looking over our shoulder and forcing an end each time when it looked like we’d force total capitulation.
But, as I said before, the last 30 years certainly beat the previous 33 regarding the Egypt/Israel border. So Laura was right in that as bad as he was, he was at least better for Israel than his predecessors.

  4. a) we Israelis on israpundit have only one King Who is the G-d of Israel and you exile Jews have two Kings: the goy in which land you live

My thoughts are my own and I do not kowtow to anyone. I do not say anything in order to impress gentiles. The fact is that most ISRAELIS would prefer to maintain the Mubarak regime. Not because they or I have any illusions that he is a good guy but only the lesser evil, as I have said repeatedly. In fact it is LEFT-WING American Jews who have come out in support of the anti-Mubarak protesters. Phyllis Chesler wrote a column about it.

  5. All the Jews in the world? Since when
do all REAL JEWS IN ISRAEL have your same thoughts?

There was a time when Diaspora Jews behaved as Jews and not fodder for Gentiles: They gave a good accounting of themselves against the best there was.

    Kitos War
ha’galuyot or mered ha’tfutzot : Rebellion of the exile) is the name given to the second of the Jewish-Roman wars.

    Read more:

There was a time when diaspora Jews behaved as proud Jews.

    Cyrenaica

“The Jews … waged war on the inhabitants throughout Libya in the most savage fashion, and to such an extent was the country wasted that, its cultivators having been slain, its land would have remained utterly depopulated, had not the Emperor Hadrian gathered settlers from other places and sent them thither, for the inhabitants had been wiped out.”

“‘Meanwhile the Jews in the region of Cyrene had put one Andreas at their head and were destroying both the Romans and the Greeks. They would cook their flesh, make belts for themselves of their entrails, anoint themselves with their blood, and wear their skins for clothing. Many they sawed in two, from the head downwards. Others they would give to wild beasts and force still others to fight as gladiators. In all, consequently, two hundred and twenty thousand perished. In Egypt, also, they performed many similar deeds, and in Cyprus under the leadership of Artemio. There, likewise, two hundred and forty thousand perished. For this reason no Jew may set foot in that land, but even if one of them is driven upon the island by force of the wind, he is put to death. Various persons took part in subduing these Jews, one being Lusius, who was sent by Trajan.”

Then Lukuas moved towards Alexandria, entered the city, which had been abandoned by the Roman troops in Egypt under the leadership of governor Marcus Rutilius Lupus, and set fire to the city. The pagan temples and the tomb of Pompey were destroyed.

In Cyprus a Jewish band under a leader named Artemion had taken control of the island, killing thousands of civilians. “Under the leadership of one Artemion, the Cypriot Jews participated in the great uprising against the Romans under Trajan, and they are reported to have massacred 240,000 Greeks (Dio Cassius, lxviii. 32).” A small Roman army was dispatched to the island, soon reconquering the capital. After the revolt had been fully defeated, laws were created forbidding any Jews to live on the island.

  6. The peace with Egypt just like Jordan is a FALSE peace but can Israelis achieve a REAL lasting peace in the region? I think not. There has to be two WILLING parties. Israel has been the ONLY willing democratic nation in the region. But willing does not mean trading land for peace. Thats a fallacy and is trickery. Trying to trick and deceive to eat away at Israel. ANYONE outside of Israel who wants to put faith or trust in dictators needs to get their head examined.

  7. Joemit here is another argument that you can digest, I think.

Peace is more dangerous than war. The major presumption behind the peace efforts is that peace is good. What if that is a fallacy? What if the Jews relinquish their land in exchange for something highly negative? Counterintuitive as that may sound, it is true nonetheless.

There is no eternal peace; every peace treaty is eventually violated or becomes irrelevant. Greeks and Persians, Romans and Carthagians, Francs and Germans, Hutus and Tutsis—all made peace and went to war intermittently. Of the various kinds of peace, unconditional surrender tends to have the longest life-span, but even such a peace is often reversed, as was the case with Russia’s capitulation to Germany in WWI, or Czechoslovakia’s in WWII.

A peace treaty is liable to several tests. It must establish a situation significantly better than war. It must not lay the foundation for another war. It must leave the victorious party in a good position to wage the next war should it break out. Israel-Egypt peace settlement fail on all these counts.

The peace treaty with Egypt is insulting as it betrays the memory of tens of thousands of Jews who died repelling the Arab aggression. The peace lacks a credible historical precedent: victors don’t give away the land annexed or taken from conquered aggressors. The peace is economically futile. But forget all this. Most importantly, the peace puts Israel in grave danger of an Egyptian military buildup. (They too are close to achieving Nukes)

  8. JEW…..Who the hell do you think you are speaking for? All the Jews in the world? Since when
do all REAL JEWS IN ISRAEL have your same thoughts? Since when do all of us “OUTCAST EXILES”
think the same thoughts? What do you get when you put two Jews together? AN ARGUEMENT.
But you speak for the almighty and you know how and what everY Jew in the world thinks?
I think you don’t think so good.

  9. Laura,

the mb are ideological islamists and mubarak is a power obsessed pragmatist.

the mb want war against Israel at any price, mubarak wants to have power at any price.

the mb would even comit collective suicide in order to annihilate Israel (G-d forbid), mubarak would do anything in order to remain in power.

therefrom you conlude that mubarak is better for Israel, since mubarak would even sign a peace treaty with Israel if this would enhance his chances to remain in power.

BUT, laura, mubarak would also launch a genocidal war against Israel if this would enhance his chances to remain in power.

and now, laura, the point is that things are evolving such that the vast majority of the arab street WANTS JIHAD and that no arab leader can remain in power if he does not give in to the jihadist desire.

therefore yamit was right when he wrote that the only difference between mubarak and the mb is that the mb want war now and mubarak will wage war “only” in ten years.

now, why do you think that ALL ISRAELIS on israpundit except Ted prefer an immediate war rather than a certain war in ten years while you AMERICANS JEWS on israpundit have the opposite preference? for two reasons:

    a) we Israelis on israpundit have only one King Who is the G-d of Israel and you exile Jews have two Kings: the goy in which land you live and the G-d of your forefathers.

    b) we Israelis want CHANGE, i.e. we want the final Redemption to come as soon as possible, while you exile Jews want the status quo to remain as long as possible.

  10. Laura. Of coarse there is concern that a more oppresive regime will take over but that is no excuse for backing the current one. It is up to the Egyptian people to prevent that and LET WASHINGTON KNOW TO STOP INTERFERRING.

  11. Laura is wrong for Backing Mubarak,

It’s not really about backing Mubarak so much as preventing the ascension of the muslim brotherhood to power.

  12. First of all, I never knew this blog was like a theocracy, but I do understand why you prefer it that way.

I don’t object to honest disagreements. What I objected to was accusing me of not being pro-Israel.

  13. Laura, I do know what I am talking about and unless you lived through antisemitism like I have you would not know those little catch phrases and continual antagonistic remarks like the one you made about 10 percent of Jews yet refuse to provide a link for.

It wasn’t unfair of course that she threw in that dig about how many Jews come to Israel to visit. Oh yes, I understand more then you think I do.

I NEVER MADE ANY SUCH REMARKS. Comments are being falsibly attributed to me. Either you are lying or someone is placing comments under my name. I think I may know who. Like I said, people are coming here in order to agitate and smear other commenters.

  14. Laura is wrong for Backing Mubarak, he is soon going any event and the situation in Egypt may well have saved Israel who has been asleep at the wheel for the past thirty years. Now we have time? We are going to have to fight Egypt sooner or later and it better be sooner. America and stupid Jews will see to it that Egypt continues to be armed and trained in order to be able to kill more Israelis.

On Sunday, Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman conducted talks with representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood. Thanks to the Obama administration’s support for the Brotherhood, the outlawed Islamic totalitarian movement is now seen as a legitimate political force in the post- Mubarak Egypt.

The Obama administration’s support for the group against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak points to the third great security challenge facing Israel today. The IDF will now have to develop a fighting doctrine that takes account of the US’s apparent abandonment of strategic reason.

POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS in Egypt, as well as the sabotage of the natural gas pipeline from Egypt to Israel at el-Arish, show that the southern front is active again after 30 years. The IDF needs to prepare for the possibility of a conventional war in the south and the north. It will have to relearn how to fight a war in the desert. New weapons systems will have to be developed and procured. Troops will have to receive expanded training.

The regular army will have to be vastly expanded. The military budget will have to increase massively. Intelligence assets, already stretched, will have to be significantly augmented and adapted to meet new challenges.

In short, the ways the IDF thinks about war, plans for war, arms for war, trains for war and wages war are all going to have to change.

  15. Laura..

Some of the regular commenters such as Susan and dan friedman need to go.

First of all, I never knew this blog was like a theocracy, but I do understand why you prefer it that way. Laura, I will make a deal. Provide the links I requested and I am gone.

Laura, I do know what I am talking about and unless you lived through antisemitism like I have you would not know those little catch phrases and continual antagonistic remarks like the one you made about 10 percent of Jews yet refuse to provide a link for. It is so like Christians to antagonize a Jew and when a Jew stands up for himself they get silenced exactly like you want to silence me.

As for loving Israel. That country like it or not was built and planted and fought for by the most part, liberals from Europe. I may not be a liberal but when I walk on the streets of Israel I am not ignorant or self serving or blind enough to know how that country was grown.

I find it amazing how I got jumped for writing facts which not one of you came to my defense on because I am not completely on your tract. I find it shameful.

Jomit. It wasn’t unfair of course that she threw in that dig about how many Jews come to Israel to visit. Oh yes, I understand more then you think I do.

Continue to peculate your own bias until you all explode. This is exactly what the left does.

They are making Israpundit an unpleasant experience and I believe they are anti-Israel agitators

Your right Laura, when I started commenting on Israpundit the majority of those participating were supporters of Israel. It now has become somewhat a battle ground with agitators.

Israpundit is about ideas, suggestions and recommendations in support of Israel, not in condemnation.
Israpundit is about Israel not becoming secular-progressive.
Israpundit is about seeking the change of liberal American Jews to support Israel, the Holy Land G-d provided for them.
Israpundit is not about those seeking to convert Jews to other faiths.
Israpundit is about Israel accepting unconditional support from those seeking only her friendship in return.

Think about it, Israel stands alone and tall as the only friend of the free world in the ME.

  17. Susan, I have been reading Laura’s posts for a very long time. She is anything but anti Israel
and that accusation is way off the mark and unfair.

Re Mubarek: From 1948 until 1981 there were 4 wars fought against Egypt (5 if you count the
combined British, French, Israeli attack against Egypt). A total of 33 years.
From 1981 until 2011 there were no wars with Egypt. A total of 30 years.
    I rest Laura’s case.

  18. Some of the regular commenters such as Susan and dan friedman need to go. They are making Israpundit an unpleasant experience and I believe they are anti-Israel agitators. I’m sorry that Bill Levinson, Bill Narvey, Randy Texas and Ron Grand stopped posting regularly. Some of the newbies ruin it for the rest of us.

  19. And you are not pro-Israel!!

YOu have no clue what you are talking about. No one has defended Israel more than I have. You have only been here recently and have no business making judgements about me which are way off the mark. If I am so wrong, why do the Israelis support maintaining the Mubarak regime?

Walk like an Egyptian. I say ZERO in defense of an oppressive regime.

An even more oppressive regime will be ushered in in its place. That will lead to a major mideast war.

Who would believe that Laura had a sense of humour, but this one she told is a hum-dinger, a real razza matazz.

President Bill Clinton came to visit Mubarak in Egypt and was impressed by how popular he was and how easily he kept winning re-election. ” Mubarak,” he said “I’m about to run for re-election. Could you send your advisors to Washington to help me run my campaign?” Mubarak says OK and sends his men to America to help campaign for Clinton. On election day, when all the ballots are counted, the count is 90% in favor of electing Hosni Mubarak.

    Yuk, yuk.

What are you talking about? I did not say that.

    Yuk, yuk.

  22. Laura, I assume your reply was meant for me, Susan. Please, do me a favor and allow me to cut to the chase. Hosni Mubarak did not wage war openly upon Israel because he couldn’t. The answer is a no brainier. He knew if he did his country would get the hell beat out of them!! That of course would kill the myth which your lesser of evils perpetuated all along. Egypt won Milhemet Sheshet Ha Yamim. Understand?

Believe me, I am not being foolish or shortsighted as you claim. The reason for showing the supposed ‘masses’ with those signs was to delegitimize them. They got those signs from state run authorities who fed that BULLCRAP to their eyes and ears from the moment their eyes opened at birth!! That fact after all is what the Republican Party has been saying all these years. So, now it is different, of course!! The “sky is falling, the sky is falling.” G-d help us all if the rallying cries were sounded back when a denier of the Shoah was being embraced, whitewashed and lied for by oh my, one of our own appeasers! From that moment on the damage to Israel was FAR GREATER then an actual war. From that moment Israel the victim was turned into the victimizer; the pariah of all time.

    you said:

“At least he is not a fanatic bent on waging war against Israel”

Unless you know one Israeli whose life was snuffed out from armaments obtained through tunnels from Egypt, your comment is completely out of line.

“Any government that supports, protects or harbors terrorists is complicit in the murder of the innocent and equally guilty of terrorist crimes.”
    George W. Bush

Of course the fact that Mubarak the TERRORIST YOU UPHOLD BECAUSE YOU HATE OBAMA would not step foot on Israel soil also speaks for the man he is.

    you said:

    Mubarak is not a jihadist.

    And you are not pro-Israel!!

    For the record:

Some of the most virulent antisemitism of all time came from Egypt where it was allowed to foment and flourish….
….from the top…down to the people themselves
    which by so doing…
    fanned the flames Understand?
    which brought the arms Understand?
    which KILLED JEWS KILLED JEWS!!

Which makes HOSNI MUBARAK A TERRORIST.

“Any government that supports, protects or harbors terrorists is complicit in the murder of the innocent and equally guilty of terrorist crimes.”
    George W. Bush

Those that lost loved ones because Mubarak did nothing to stop what was being smuggled through tunnels because the flames to which he was fanning, he himself upheld, might indeed have a bit of a disparaging reply for you. Your equation that Mubarak is the lesser of evil tells me you should use your measuring spoons for making cookies rather than making rationalizations.

I want Obama out of the White House. I want him a one term President! Yet most regrettably with eggs on our faces that places us farther and farther away from our objective. Once the truth gets twisted it is done for.

  23. You are being desperate here.

And you are being foolish and shortsighted. No one here ever said Mubarak is less an anti-Semite than the rest of his countrymen. We have said all along that he is by far the lesser evil however. At least he is not a fanatic bent on waging war against Israel. He has kept the peace for 30 years. The mb would, on the other hand, abrogate the peace treaty and declare war on Israel and support terrorism against America. They are jihadists after all. Mubarak is not a jihadist.

  24. Wait a minute here. Under the Mubarak regime state run newspapers and other official government information sources have freely promoted, incubated and endorsed Antisemitism to the fullest degree. You know it, I know it and everyone knows it. Furthermore the cartoons you show which once conservative blogs denounced as Antisemitism from the ‘MUBARAK state run machine’ were taken from state run government sponsored media, after all. Anyway, In the end we all know there were Antisemites among the protesters. This is Egypt. This has nothing at all to do with the base of the protests. Many spit on American flags while at the same time trying to get visas to come to the U.S.

You are being desperate here. Using those cartoons as an example which in the end proves nothing and are similar to the cries that Abbas (the great man of peace) just gave two grand to a family of a terrorist. Wooptido!! Two grand is a drop in the bucket compared to the tens of millions given to that indisputable denier of the Shoah who is nothing more than a terrorist in a business suit whose past was all but cleansed by a post 9-11, war on terror president!!

The road to that end is not always a straight path.

“You can’t put democracy and freedom back into a box.”
    George W. Bush

Well well, like I said, it is much too cold for wearing flip flops, wouldn’t you say?

I am sure if someone else would be president right now these protests against the protesters would be much quieter. Interesting, (as I look back now) where was the conservative voice when BS was flowing like a raging river by the Bush white house about that great march toward democracy unfolding before our eyes in Iraq? Last time I looked, the so-called democratically elected Iraqi head of state made no secret about what they would do if an Israeli plane flew over their airspace.
Indeed as insane as giving credit to Jordan as being a good friend and ally of the U.S while sending in thousands of insurgents to Iraq which reaped death upon our boys. Ditto the same bunch of lies about Mubarak who allowed tens of thousands of weapons tunnels dug which like it or not folks and friends of Israel, killed innocent Israelis. Period.

“Any government that supports, protects or harbors terrorists is complicit in the murder of the innocent and equally guilty of terrorist crimes.”
    George W. Bush

    except……
    LOL.

  25. Much ado about nothing. So a few rabble-rousers held a few signs – so what? Tom Friedman who was there said in today’s N.Y. Times that he never once heard the word “Israel”. This is a great celebration for freedom. A great mitzvah for the Egyptian people. Too much is made of this narrow “But, is it good for the Jews?” malarky.
