What must the GoI be thinking

By Ted Belman

DEBKAfile’s sources reveal that prime minister Ehud Olmert, defense minister Ehud Barak and chief of staff Lt. Gen. Gaby Ashkenazi have again decided to defer a major military operation for wiping out the Hamas war machine in Gaza. Its long postponement has left the Islamist terrorists free to greatly enhance their capabilities. This brings 175,000 Israelis within range.

The longer we wait the greater the difficulty in defending against the attacks. It’s Lebanon all over again.

The fact that it is no small task now to deal with the problem is further evidence of the folly of retreat and disengagement. Were the IDF to attack, we would see just how great the folly was.

The government can want to postpone this for one of two reasons. Either they do not want to upset the “peace process” (In fact it would end it) or they want a Lebanon War II battle which would allow the use of planes and artillery to devastate Gaza as the IDF did Lebanon.
