Israel Seeks to Build International Coalition Against Iran-backed Houthis as Attacks Increase

Peloni:  While complaints of both Americans and world leaders have argued against the US being the world’s policeman, the Trump Doctrine has called for regional partners who have the capacity and aligned ideology to promote US interests without US involvement.  This was clearly the role played by Israel in the 12 Day War, even ending that war as declared by the US, and even dropping its final attack regardless of the yet to be met timed deadline due to Trump’s public demand that they do so.  Israel has been likewise playing a similar role with Yemen, having taken over the attacks on the Houthis after attacking internatioinal shipping and is now seeking to assemble an international coalition to end the Houthi menace, much as Mike Doran informed us in a recent podcast that Israel would be doing so.  This is the Trump Doctrine in action.

Latest Developments

  • Israel Seeks Coalition: Israel is reportedly seeking to build a coalition of U.S. and partner forces to launch renewed strikes against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen after the terrorist organization’s attacks intensified in recent weeks. According to reports on July 10, Jerusalem believes that the Houthi threat “can no longer remain solely an Israeli problem” and that “a renewal of American attacks and the formation of a coalition including additional countries” is necessary to put an end to the Red Sea terrorism. Israel last launched strikes against the Houthis on July 7, striking the Houthi-controlled ports of Hodeidah, Ras Issa, and Al-Salif, as well as the Ras Kanatib power station north of Hodeidah.

  • Red Sea Ships Attempting to Avoid Houthi Attacks: Commercial ships transiting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden have been broadcasting messages on their public tracking systems about their crews’ nationalities and even religion in a bid to avoid being targeted by the Houthis. Some ships displayed messages such as “All Crew Muslim,” others indicated that the vessels were managed and crewed by Chinese individuals or firms, and some displayed messages claiming there were armed guards aboard. Insurance costs for shipping goods through the Red Sea have more than doubled since the Houthis sank two ships just within the past week, though the U.S. Department of Defense stated on July 10 that the United States has not changed its force posture in the region in response.
  • Ballistic Missiles Continue: In addition to the group’s renewed attacks against commercial shipping, the Houthis have continued to launch ballistic missiles against Israel. A ballistic missile launched from Yemen by the terrorist organization fell short outside of Israel’s borders on July 10, not triggering any incoming warning sirens in Israel. An additional missile was intercepted by Israel’s air defense array the same day.

FDD Expert Response

“Israel is exactly right. The Houthis aren’t just their problem but a problem for the international community. The United States and allies, including but not limited to Israel, should be cooperating to eliminate the Houthi threat to the Red Sea, a key international waterway. This includes preventing the group from rearming and rebuilding its weapons stockpiles, isolating it from international financiers, and striking assets and leaders. Just as importantly, the United States and Israel should consider ways to hold Iran accountable for the actions of Tehran’s terrorist partner in Yemen.” — Bridget Toomey, Research Analyst

“The Houthis have risen significantly inside the ranks of the Iran-led ‘Resistance Axis’ as it has been the only actor that has consistently launched attacks against Israel following the October 7 massacre. The Houthis’ involvement in the war has transformed the group into an extension of the so-called Palestinian Resistance, effectively establishing the expectation that as long as Israel is at war with Hamas, the Yemen-based group will join the fray. This shift poses a broader threat to international interests, as the Houthis have repeatedly demonstrated that they will target other countries’ maritime assets in support of Palestinian terrorist groups at war with Israel. Thus, a coalition of countries, especially those that may be affected by the Houthi attacks, should be formed to counter the group’s threats.” Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst and Editor at FDD’s Long War Journal
