Today at Masjid At-Taqwa, I had the pleasure of meeting with Imam Siraj Wahhaj, one of the nation’s foremost Muslim leaders and a pillar of the Bed-Stuy community for nearly half a century. I was also joined by CM @dr_yusefsalaam of Harlem. A beautiful Jummah. pic.twitter.com/4kcN4CGlUk

Zohran Mamdani shares photos from a Jummah prayer at NYPD designated terrorism organization, Masjid At-Taqwa, and his “pleasure” meeting with terror supporter Imam Siraj Wahhaj—the Bed-Stuy community leader since 1981, who was named as unindicted coconspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
In the 1995 trial of Abdel Rahman, the “Blind Sheikh”, over the ‘93 WTC bombing (United States v. Omar Abdel Rahman et al.), Wahhaj testified as his character witness and described him as a “respected scholar” and “strong preacher of Islam.” [U.S. v. Salameh et al., SDNY Case No. 93 Cr. 181.; Trial Transcript, Vol. 22; pp. 4567–4572; DOJ indictment; p. 12, para. 45)]
Though he was not charged due to insufficient evidence, prosecutors in a related 2001 terrorism material support case notified defense counsel of Wahhaj’s status as a potential co-conspirator in related plots (Southern District of New York titled United States v. Lynne Stewart, Mohammed Yousry, and Ahmed Abdel Sattar; Case No. 00 Cr. 395);
All three defendants in this case were convicted of smuggling messages/fatwas from the imprisoned Egyptian cleric Omar Abdel Rahman—the “Blind Sheikh” convicted in 1995 for his role in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and plots to bomb New York City landmarks that Wahhaj defended—and his terrorist organization, Gama’a al-Islamiyya (Islamic Group), a designated foreign terrorist organization; Wahhaj was not accused in the Stewart case itself.
His son Siraj Ibn Wahhaj received a life sentence in 2024 for terrorism and kidnapping resulting in a toddler’s death at a New Mexico compound where children faced abuse and radical training. Imam Siraj Wahhaj donated $1,000 to a pro-Mamdani super PAC in May and endorsed him.
Masjid At-Taqwa, the mosque in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood founded in 1981, has been at the center of controversy beyond its association with Imam Siraj Wahhaj. Allegations of extremism, radicalization, and ties to militant activities, have repeatedly surfaced in NYPD investigations, media reports, and watchdog analyses.
Since at least 2003, the NYPD has labeled the mosque a “terrorism organization” under Terrorism Enterprise Investigations (TEIs), allowing surveillance of sermons, attendees, and activities without specific evidence of wrongdoing. While the mosque is also recognized for community anti-drug and anti-violence efforts like a 1999 “Life is Sacred, Stop the Violence” symposium praised by Mayor Giuliani, it has been plagued by patterns of Salafi/Wahhabi influence and operational issues.
Mamadani has also been supported by Muslim Brotherhood operatives such as Saeed Abbasi (???? ?????) of the Egyptian Revolutionary Council.
If elected, Mamdani could materially thin federal-municipal cooperation on counterterrorism and counter network investigations through reductions or constraints on NYPD participation in the FBI’s JTTF; tighter internal gates on protest?adjacent investigative activity under the Handschu regime; and narrower federal access to the NYPD Domain Awareness System (DAS), CCTV, and License Plate Reader (LPR) data. Each of these levers is within City Hall’s practical reach even without changing law.
