Peloni:  The silence from the international community to condemn Spanish brutality against the Flotilla activists only serves to make it even more clear that Jew Hatred was real source behind the calls to chastised Ben Gvir.

Spain summoned Israel’s chargé d’affaires this week over the treatment of detained Gaza flotilla activists, accusing Israel of acting in a “monstrous” and “disgraceful” manner.

Hours later, Spain faced criticism of its own after police at Bilbao Airport were filmed dragging returning flotilla activists across the terminal floor and striking them with batons.

According to Spanish newspaper El País, the confrontation began after police asked the activists to move while they posed for photos with supporters. Four activists were arrested on charges including serious disobedience, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

The clash quickly escalated into a diplomatic and political embarrassment for Madrid, exposing tensions between Spain’s outspoken criticism of Israel and its own handling of pro-Palestinian activists at home.

During the summoned meeting with Israel’s chargé d’affaires, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares had called Israel’s treatment of the flotilla activists “monstrous,” “inhumane,” and “disgraceful.”

The footage from Bilbao Airport prompted Israel to demand an explanation regarding Spain’s treatment of the activists.

“We demand an explanation from the Spanish government regarding its treatment of the flotilla anarchists,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry wrote in a post on X.

In a separate post, the ministry wrote, “The flotilla anarchists are driving the Spanish police crazy,” adding:

“The flotilla anarchists bring provocation and chaos everywhere. Here they are in Greece.”

Within Spain, the Basque left-wing party EH Bildu condemned what it described as a “harsh” police response.

“The violence used against an action symbolizing solidarity and the defense of human rights is completely unjustified. It is unacceptable to beat and arrest people in the Basque Country who were kidnapped by Israel,” the party said in a statement on X.

According to The Jerusalem Post, “EH Bildu said it would request the urgent appearance of Basque Security Minister Bingen Zupiria before the Basque parliament to explain the police action. The party also called for the immediate release of the four detainees and demanded an end to what it described as hostility toward solidarity actions.”

Relations between Spain and Israel — much like those between Ireland and Israel — have sharply deteriorated since the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel. Spain’s left-wing government, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has emerged as one of Europe’s most vocal critics of Israel’s military operations against Iran-backed groups including Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.

In May 2024, Spain joined Ireland and Norway in formally recognizing a Palestinian state. In response, Israel recalled its ambassador from Madrid, leaving the embassy under the leadership of a chargé d’affaires.

Following Spain’s recognition of Palestine, Second Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Díaz released a video stating, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”

Last May, Sánchez became one of the first major Western leaders to accuse Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

“We don’t trade with a genocidal state. We don’t. I believe I explained from this platform the other day what we’re talking about, when some statements were made that weren’t true,” Sánchez stated during a debate in the Spanish parliament.

In March 2026, Spain announced the withdrawal of its ambassador to Israel, Ana María Salomón Pérez. Since then, the Spanish embassy in Israel has been headed by its chargé d’affaires.
