Democracy’s Fatal Flaw: The Ignorant Voter

Peloni: Interestingly, I have always linked the point raised in this essay as being the foundation for Ben Franklin supposedly having stated “A Republic, if you can keep it” when quizzed about the form of the new American nation.  The will of the people can be misguided and shifting, and this makes the possibility of consistent national policies somewhat questionable if not impossible.

Of course, the Republican form of govt has served the Americans well up to recently, and I would argue that much of the recent insanity in America has to do with the inability of the American govt to exercise agency over its own borders, governing administrations, and education.  The failure of the Fourth Estate has accentuated much of these failures in American governance, and the consequence of this is that the too many people are not just ill informed, but rather they are purposefully misinformed.  The nuance between these facets is significant, and the willful move to misalign public sentiment at the behest of malevolent foreign actors such as China, Qatar and Turkey is having the desired effect of this foreign cabal to weaponize the the inherent vulnerability of democracies against the national interest.  Recalling that freedom isn’t free, and without the heavy lifting by the world’s democracies to reaffirm their national agency and sovereign obligations, freedom will continue to be diminished from many aspects, but none so dangerous and crippling I would argue than from the loss of journalistic standards which should be shining the light on foreign influence and political corruption, rather than playing a role of complicity in these matters.

Linda Goudsmit:  I am an American with an American perspective. Even if every single item listed in this excellent analysis is true, there is one glaring void in the article. The entire list is intentional––it is planned demolition. Until the public understands that every item listed has been advanced deliberately to collapse America from within, we the people will not be able to defeat the enemies of freedom who are advancing the policies and protocols to destroy the nation-state. And who are our enemies? The globalist elite who fund and foment the escalating destructiveness of their useful idiots: the red/green Marxist/Muslim axis, the radical leftist Democrat party that supports them, and the greedy RINOS (republicans in name only) who vote with them.

Globalism is a replacement ideology that seeks to reorder the world into one singular, planetary Unistate, ruled by the globalist elite. The elite are using the Marxists and the Muslims to do their dirty work to create so much chaos that the nation becomes ungovernable. That is when the globalist elite will swoop in to “restore order.” It is a diabolical scheme that is the foundation of the World Economic Forum’s New World Order to be administered by the lethally corrupt United Nations and its equally corrupt associated agencies.

The two biggest obstacles to establishing the globalist Unistate are the United States under President Trump, and Israel under Prime Minister Netanyahu. Both men are staunch nationalists who are committed to their nation’s sovereignty and to their citizens’ individual liberties. Every false, vile, ad hominem attack and assassination attempt against these two powerful leaders is an indication of the existential threat they pose to globalism’s megalomaniacal ambition for one-world government and totalitarian control of the planet, its people, and every planetary resource whether living or non-living.

The “progressive” narrative in Israel as in the United States is the soft voice of Communism and Islamism busy marketing socialism as equity, and Islam as a religion like any other. Both are lies. Communism and Islamism ar both replacement ideologies seeking to rule the world, and each believes it will prevail in the current War of Ideologies. But it is the globalist elite who are pulling the strings.

The globalist elite are an international consortium of extremely powerful, ubra-wealthy, men and women in and out of governments whose goal is to rule the world with absolute power. And before anyone dismisses this as conspiracy theory, it is essential to remember that every conspiracy begins with a theory.

How We Gave Everyone a Megaphone and Acted Surprised by the Noise

Democracy is often described as humanity’s greatest achievement.

That’s a bit like calling a root canal humanity’s greatest dental procedure. It may be true, but it hardly makes it pleasant.

Winston Churchill famously described democracy as the worst form of government—except for all the others.

What he neglected to mention is that democracy contains a design flaw so obvious that nobody dares talk about it in polite company.

In a democracy, the vote of a Nobel Prize-winning economist counts exactly the same as the vote of a guy whose primary source of political information is a meme he saw while sitting on the toilet.

One citizen spends years studying economics, history, foreign affairs, and public policy.

Another thinks inflation is caused by greedy grocery stores and that government debt is “just numbers on a screen.”

Both walk into the voting booth with equal power.

And then we wonder why things occasionally go sideways.

The Outsourced Mind

The real problem isn’t that voters think too much.

It’s that many no longer think at all.

They outsource the job.

They let the evening news decide.

They let TikTok decide.

They let their favourite podcaster decide.

They let celebrities decide.

They let political parties decide.

They let whatever social group they belong to decide.

Then they simply repeat the approved talking points as if they had reached those conclusions themselves.

Ask them why they support a particular policy and you will often hear a slogan instead of an argument.

Ask a follow-up question and the conversation usually ends.

Many voters don’t hold opinions.

Opinions hold them.

Politics has increasingly become less about reasoning and more about tribal membership.

People no longer ask, “What is true?”

They ask, “What does my side believe?”

Once that question is answered, independent thought becomes unnecessary.

The media tells them what to fear.

Social media tells them who to blame.

Politicians tell them who the villains are.

And millions dutifully repeat the script.

The result is a nation filled with people who possess strong opinions but only a vague understanding of how they acquired them.

The greatest triumph of modern political manipulation is not convincing people what to think.

It is convincing them they arrived at those thoughts on their own.

Federal Politics: Vote Buying with Borrowed Money

At the federal level, ignorance becomes expensive.

Politicians quickly learn that voters love free stuff.

Free healthcare.

Free tuition.

Free housing.

Free childcare.

Free dental care.

Free prescriptions.

Free everything.

The only thing voters don’t want is the bill.

So politicians have developed a brilliant solution.

They simply borrow the money and leave the bill for grandchildren who aren’t old enough to complain yet.

This is the political equivalent of taking your family to the finest restaurant in town, ordering the most expensive items on the menu, and then handing the cheque to a toddler.

The toddler is delighted.

The politicians get re-elected.

The country gets the credit-card statement.

State and Provincial Politics: Compassion Without Arithmetic

Provincial and state governments operate under an even stranger set of rules.

Every program is described as an investment.

Every expenditure is called compassionate.

Every criticism is labeled heartless.

If someone asks whether a program actually works, they are immediately accused of hating children, teachers, nurses, seniors, puppies, and possibly democracy itself.

The discussion ends.

The spending continues.

The deficits grow.

And eventually reality arrives carrying a calculator.

Reality is rude that way.

Municipal Politics: The Olympics of Hypocrisy

Municipal politics is where voter ignorance reaches its purest form.

Residents demand:

  • Better roads.
  • More housing.
  • Safer streets.
  • Improved transit.
  • Cleaner parks.
  • More services.

Then they oppose every project, every development, every tax increase, every zoning change, and every inconvenience required to achieve any of those goals.

The average municipal voter’s platform can be summarized as follows:

“I want everything fixed immediately, provided nothing changes and nobody asks me to pay for it.”

It is an extraordinary philosophy.

If applied to home ownership, it would sound like:

“I’d like a new roof, a renovated kitchen, a swimming pool, and lower mortgage payments. Also, please don’t send me any bills.”

Yet this is considered perfectly reasonable when discussing city budgets.

Foreign Policy by Hashtag

Nothing illustrates democratic ignorance better than foreign affairs.

Complex geopolitical conflicts involving centuries of history, religion, culture, military strategy, economics, and diplomacy are now analyzed through social media posts shorter than a grocery list.

One side posts a picture.

The other side posts a different picture.

Millions instantly become experts.

Within hours, people who couldn’t locate Gaza, Ukraine, Taiwan, or Iran on a map are passionately demanding sanctions, invasions, ceasefires, regime changes, and international treaties.

Astonishingly, these same people struggle to assemble IKEA furniture.

Yet they are fully prepared to redesign the Middle East.

The News Industry’s Dirty Secret

The media discovered something important years ago.

Information is boring.

Outrage sells.

“Municipal Pension Liabilities Continue to Deteriorate” gets ignored.

“DEMOCRACY IS DYING!” generates millions of clicks.

As a result, politics has evolved into a form of professional wrestling for people who think they are informed.

Every day brings a new crisis.

Every election becomes “the most important election in history.”

Every politician is either a saviour or Hitler.

And every voter becomes progressively angrier, less informed, and more convinced of their own brilliance.

The Real Problem

The greatest threat to democracy is not corruption.

It is not foreign interference.

It is not social media.

It is not billionaires.

It is not even politicians.

The greatest threat is the growing number of citizens who believe that having an opinion is the same thing as having knowledge.

It isn’t.

If your mechanic told you he learned automotive repair from TikTok, you would run.

If your surgeon announced she got her medical education from Instagram, you would flee the hospital.

Yet millions happily cast votes that shape the future of entire nations while possessing less political knowledge than they have about their favourite hockey team.

And nobody is allowed to point this out because it sounds elitist.

The Necessary Cure

No, we do not take away voting rights.

That would be worse than the disease.

But we should stop celebrating ignorance.

Schools should teach economics, civics, constitutional law, and critical thinking with the same intensity they teach everything else.

The media should inform rather than inflame.

Politicians should occasionally tell the truth, even when it costs votes.

And citizens should treat voting as a responsibility rather than a recreational activity.

Because democracy is not self-government.

It is informed self-government.

Remove the informed part, and democracy becomes little more than a national group project where half the participants didn’t do the reading, several copied their answers from social media, and somehow everyone still expects an A.

The miracle isn’t that democracies sometimes fail.

The miracle is that they work at all.

  2. Not just voter ID, but fluency in written and spoken English and Five skill Testing Questions.

And you get as many votes as your last year’s tax return says you paid to the IRS. With the exception of ANY civil servants who must deduct their public payroll from that number. Which most times, will leave the Civil Servant in a deficit, which means they can’t vote – for goodies for themselves.
