Summary

In an interview with Rabbi Pesach Wolicki, Brig. Gen. Amir Avivi explains that Israel and the United States remain strategically aligned in their fundamental objective of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, developing long-range missiles, and continuing to build its network of regional proxies. While acknowledging differences do exist—particularly regarding the U.S. focus on reopening the Strait of Hormuz to stabilize global energy markets—he notes that these differences do not alter the shared long-term goals between the two allied nations.

Avivi maintains that Israel has prepared decisive military plans against Iran that would target the regime’s economic and governmental infrastructure rather than simply military assets. Such strike would aim to cripple the regime’s ability to finance repression and regional aggression, creating conditions that could ultimately lead to regime change. Avivi asserts that, if necessary, Israel is prepared to act independently if necessary, especially if Iran attacks Israel directly, or, alternatively, could operate alongside the United States if requested. He notes that the Iranian regime cannot be deterred or permanently contained through negotiations and in pursuit of the shared longterm goals of Israel and the US, the existing regime will ultimately need to be removed from power.

Beyond conventional warfare, Avivi warns that Iran is likely to seek revenge through terrorism against Jewish communities abroad and by inciting violence within Israel. He expresses particular concern about Iranian efforts to exploit large illegal weapons stockpiles among Israeli Arabs and Palestinians, suggesting that future large-scale attacks could originate from within Israel rather than across its borders. He explains that dismantling the Iranian regime is essential not only for Israel’s security but also for expanding regional normalization as well as countering future threats from both Shiite and radical Sunni actors.

Regarding Iran’s proxy network, Avivi predicts that organizations such as Hezbollah would struggle to survive without Iranian funding, training, and technology. He says Lebanon’s government has become increasingly willing to challenge Hezbollah’s dominance and pursue normalization with Israel, although substantial US investment in the Lebanese Armed Forces will be needed. He also insists that Israel must eventually return to Gaza to complete the dismantling and demilitarization of Hamas, arguing that no international force will do so on Israel’s behalf.

Importantly, Avivi suggests that Israel’s campaign is somewhat closer to a marathon rather than a sprint. While acknowledging that the military and reserve forces are under strain following years of conflict, he maintains a sense of confidence and certainty that as Israel has already accomplished most of its objectives, it will also ultimately achieve decisive victories across all fronts by maintaining a sense of purpose,  perseverance and determination.
