Francesca Hong failed to secure the Democratic nomination for Wisconsin governor Tuesday night amid lack of support from high-profile leftists.
Hong lost the primary by less than one percent to David Crowley, the Democratic candidate who earned the endorsement of outgoing Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers. Crowley will face off against Republican nominee Tom Tiffany, the Wisconsin congressman endorsed by President Donald Trump.
Hong boasted double-digit poll leads ahead of the primary. Hong also enjoyed the backing of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and other aligned lawmakers, like Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar and California Rep. Ro Khanna.
Ostensible leftist kingmakers like Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez refrained from endorsing Hong despite campaigning for and supporting other progressives like Michigan nominee Abdul El-Sayed.
Hong may be too “woke” for Ocasio-Cortez, who dodged questions about the Wisconsinite’s past remarks calling to abolish prisons and the police. When pressed about Hong’s previous comments recently, Ocasio-Cortez laughed it off and said, “Woke 1 was crazy!”
Although Hong’s views were shared by many in the Democratic Party, including Ocasio-Cortez, it appears that some liberals were trying to distance themselves from her.
Hong also came under fire for past calls to “cancel Thanksgiving,” disavowing the beloved American holiday as a celebration of “colonialism and the original superspreader event that killed Indigenous folx.”
Hong has since walked back her remarks in several media appearances, saying she was simply letting her “feelings out into the world.”
“I was actually trying to become a sports journalist when I first went to college, so I learned then you have some hot takes, sometimes bad takes, on Twitter,” Hong said. “And I let my feelings out into the world.”
Crowley is set to face off against Tiffany on Nov. 3 in the race to succeed Evers.
