In an important article written by Col. Richard Kemp, “Political warfare against Israel, led by Russia and China,” he explains that rather than being merely a matter of history, sentiment or religion, US support for Zionism should be recognized as an important American national-security interest.
Kemp reminds the reader that Israel is a major “force multiplier” for America, providing valuable intelligence, battlefield experience with U.S. weapons systems, counterterrorism capabilities and military advantages while reducing the need for American commitments in the Middle East. He emphasizes that Israel’s military actions also constrain Russian, Chinese and Iranian ambitions in the region, making Israel a strategic obstacle to their efforts to expand their influence. He also highlights that the extensive political-warfare campaigns conducted by China, Russia and Iran which have been designed to undermine Western support for Israel is due to their recognition of the strategic value which Israel represents to America.
He concludes that the growing decline of support for Israel among Democrats and divisions among Republicans should concern Americans who value the Western democratic order. Kemp urges U.S. leaders to judge allies and international organizations partly by their support for Israel, arguing that efforts to weaken Israel ultimately undermine American security as well.
