Our now deceased friend and Zionist leader was a student with Soros in Hungary and given the same chance by the invading Nazis to deliver notices to Jews in return for special food and other assistance. He handed the notice to the man at the first apartment he went to. The man asked him to wait a moment. He returned wearing his WW1 army uniform with decorations for valour, and he had tears in his eyes. He told the young student – our friend – that this was a notice of eviction and worse – by the Nazis. Our young friend never delivered another letter and he gave up the extra food for himself and his family. But the young Sosos continued to deliver the evil notices.
Soon after our friend was in shul with his father. A horrific looking man rushed in and up to the bima. He smelled of sickening smoke. He yelled – Jews, get out, don’t let them put you in ghettos! They’re sending you to your deaths!
The congregants made him leave – and complained “He’s ruining the tefilla.”
That’s when our young friend asked his father to explain and he first learned the truth.
