Peloni: An important context can be gleaned from the military strikes on Kharg Island. So long as the strikes are targeted at the military installations while preserving the oil infrastructure, it can be assumed that the outcome of the war is still directed towards a Western focused govt taking over in Iran, as the oil would provide the financial basis of this emerging Western aligned regime. Should the military strikes begin to target the oil infrastructure, it would signal an understanding by the US that the existing regime is too well entrenched and that the oil infrastructure provides support for this entrenchment, thus making it a necessary target. Kharg Island is a pivotal aspect of Iran’s economic lifeline, so US attacks on it provides an important bellwether insight into the US strategic outlook. The economic model supporting the existing regime and its various regional/global proxies would be greatly compromised if the energy infrastructure on Kharg Island was destroyed, but destroying it would also compromise any regime which might emerged as a result of such an attack.
