Italian authorities have ordered the replacement of an Israeli-led consortium developing the counter-drone protection system for Rome’s principal international airport, a decision that has intensified concerns over what critics describe as a growing European trend of excluding Israeli defense companies from major public procurement projects in the wake of the war in Gaza.
According to a report on Thursday in The Algemeiner, Italy’s Council of State, the country’s highest administrative court, ruled this week that Aeroporti di Roma (ADR), the company that manages Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, must terminate its agreement with an Israeli consortium and instead award the project to the Italian electronic warfare company ELT.
The decision represents a significant setback for two of Israel’s leading defense firms — Altintech and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems — whose participation in one of Europe’s most important aviation security initiatives will now come to an end if the ruling is fully implemented.
The Algemeiner reported that the judgment comes amid a broader pattern of European governments reassessing military, technological, and procurement relationships with Israeli companies as political pressure over Israel’s ongoing military campaign against Hamas in Gaza continues to reshape defense policy across the continent.
The controversy centers on a sophisticated counter-drone defense system designed to protect one of Europe’s busiest airports from the growing threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles.
As airports worldwide confront the increasing danger of drones disrupting commercial aviation, counter-drone technology has become one of the fastest-growing sectors within the global defense and homeland security industries. Israeli firms have long been recognized as international leaders in this field, owing largely to decades of experience confronting asymmetric threats and developing layered air-defense capabilities.
According to The Algemeiner report, the Israeli consortium had originally secured the contract to provide the airport’s anti-drone protection system before legal challenges eventually reached Italy’s highest administrative court.
