Looking for a good read

Love and Betrayal by Pamela Scheiber

LOVEI was recently contacted by Pamela Schieber asking me if I could draw attention to her just published book.   Pamela had moved from the US to Israel in the early seventies and settled in the new town, Yamit.  I myself entertained doing so at that time.  Doing so seemed so adventuresome. I asked her if she knew Yamit82. Yes.  Apparently they were neighbours. I put them in touch. How could I say no.

Here are three reviews in Amazon Books”

Once I began reading, “Love and Betrayal: A Novel”, I could not put the book down. I found the novel completing absorbing and extremely well written. The author, Pamela Schieber was able to convey a place and time in history with such perfect attention to detail that I could clearly form pictures from her words. She also brought me, the reader, inside the lives of the characters to such a degree that I felt totally wrapped up in their world and ready for the sequel!

Pamela Schieber is a born story-teller whose amazing eye for detail transports the reader into a world she knows well: Israel in the years just prior to the Egypt-Israel peace treaty. Schieber’s first novel is told through Danielle, a courageous young Jewish American who, like Schieber herself, travels to Israel and joins a group sanctioned by the Israeli government to build a new town called Yamit in the Sinai. Schieber’s keen eye for detail makes this group of pioneers and the desert they tamed through ingenuity and hard work come to life. Their hopes and dreams for their families are eventually betrayed by the hard terms of the 1980 Camp David Accords.

Fascinating portrayal of readily identifiable pioneers living in modern day Israel. We are presented with an (up to now) unknown historical perspective told from a very personal point of view. We want to know what happens to ‘Danielle”, and everyone she loves. This book is a must read.

I can’t wait to read it.

Amazon describes the plot as follows:

Israel’s victory in the 1967 war brings acclaim and respect the world over-except from its Arab enemies. Israel is later forced to defend itself against a surprise attack from Egypt in 1973, and the Israeli defense minister, Moshe Dayan, decides the country needs a more secure southern border.

Meanwhile, in the United States, twenty-four-year-old Danielle Katz has survived the unimaginable. As she boards a plane to begin a new life in Israel, Danielle is haunted by horrific memories of her brutal rape. Now as she arrives in a strange country, knowing no one but her self-absorbed sister, Danielle knows it is up to her to turn her life around. Through her belief in the Almighty and her courage to face challenges, she manages to do so-meeting her future husband, Marvin Steinberg, in the process. After she and Marvin partner with a group of Americans to build a dream city on the shore of the Mediterranean, they head for Yamit, where they unwittingly become a part of Israel’s history.

In this saga, a modern Jewish heroine embarks on a courageous journey of self-discovery as she helps settle a barren land and risks everything to protect an exquisite desert Eden from demise.
