Unspeakably terrible idea, if true. From the Lebanese press today, following Ortagus’ visit: “Informed sources say the US side is considering submitting a proposal for the deployment of reinforced international forces under US leadership in the locations that Israel says it wants to keep after February 18.”
In Beirut, Ortagus said the US was “very committed” to that “firm date” of February 18, “when the IDF will finish their deployment.”
Team Obama-Biden’s envoy Amos Hochstein already saddled the Trump administration with the ceasefire deal that aims to lock in the Obama framework in Lebanon. This has meant enlarging the US footprint and assigning a SOCOM general and a team to head the monitoring committee, ensconcing the US between Israel and Hezbollah (cf. https://tabletmag.com/sections/israel-middle-east/articles/ottoman-american-empire).
This reported proposal, if real, would consolidate this Obama framework. Not very MAGA.
