The Jordan Option, plain and simple

The Jordanian Option is the only game in town.

This will prove to be the biggest game changer in the Middle East since the Six Day War.

It will herald in the end of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The Palestinians will be incentivized to emigrate to Jordan and elsewhere. Israel will be sovereign over all lands to the west of the Jordan River and perhaps, including Gaza as well. In time, Jordan will be called Palestine.

The European Union on Wednesday signaled willingness to cooperate with the US administration’s effort to broker an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal, as long as it includes a clear commitment to the two-state solution and other internationally endorsed parameters.

Federica Mogherini, the EU’s foreign policy czar, during a meeting in Washington Tuesday with Jared Kushner, a senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, “underlined the fundamental interest of the European Union for lasting and sustainable peace and stability in the region,” according to a readout of the meeting provided by Brussels.

“In this context, the EU is ready to work with the US administration on the basis of its longstanding position, including the commitment to a negotiated two-state solution and agreed international parameters.”

I translate their brief but fiery words this way: Shall we stand idly by while our sister is treated like a prostitute?

It is a question that stands for all time. The question is still here, it awaits an answer from each generation. Shall we stand idly by as women are raped– even as we judge Shimon and Levi harshly for engaging in “overkill”? Do we stand idly by as women are forced into prostitution by dire poverty and abuse, or, like Dina, are kidnapped, forced into marriages against their will, trafficked to foreign countries and chained to brothel walls?

Tehran tries to capitalize on the U.S.’s struggles to build support for its ‘maximum pressure’ campaign

Iran is trying to mobilize an alliance of Russia, China and other countries to help counter a U.S. campaign that has included crippling economic sanctions and thousands of additional troops committed to the Middle East.

They highlight American dominance of the global financial system, which has irked both Russia and China. They also warn against U.S. cyber and psychological warfare, themes that resonate in Moscow and Beijing.

The Iranian effort is on display this week at a summit in the Russian city of Ufa, where security officials from 119 nations have gathered. Among the participants is India, a key economic partner of Tehran, and China, which—along with Russia, Germany, U.K. and France—is party to the 2015 multilateral nuclear deal with Iran that the U.S. exited last year.

Rocket attacks in Iraq, a political ultimatum; *UPDATE* Flying-bomb drones launched at Saudi Arabia

The place to start updates on the tanker saga near the Strait of Hormuz is a few hundred miles away in Iraq.  There, mortar attacks were launched Friday evening at Balad Air Base north of Baghdad (near Tikrit), where a mix of American troops and contractors is stationed.  The report is of three mortar rounds launched into the base from outside it.

The Green Zone in Baghdad, where the U.S. embassy complex is located, was also targeted with a rocket (see thread above).  Reportedly, the rocket landed on a building across the street from the embassy.

MK Ariel Kallner (Likud) on Tuesday held a tour of Judea and Samaria with the Regavim movement, during which he was exposed to the phenomenon of the Palestinian Arab takeover of Area C, which is under Israeli security and civilian control.

“We must formulate an emergency plan to halt the hostile takeover of Area C,” Kallner said at the conclusion of his tour.

“In the tour I held with Regavim I was exposed to a very serious phenomenon – the Palestinian Authority, with the assistance of the European Union, continues the war to steal our country,” he continued.

The upcoming meeting of US, Russian and Israeli national security advisers in Israel has taken on added significance as once-concealed disagreements between Russia and Iran move out into the open.

Hundreds have been killed and thousands displaced in the latest attacks by Syrian and Russian forces on the northern region of Idlib in Syria. Those forces have not shied away from targeting hospitals and residential areas.

In what may be marching orders for his national security adviser, John Bolton, US President Donald Trump tweeted last week: “Hearing word that Russia, Syria and, to a lesser extent, Iran, are bombing the hell out of Idlib Province in Syria, and indiscriminately killing many innocent civilians. The World is watching this butchery. What is the purpose, what will it get you? STOP!”

While few expect the advisors’ meeting this month in Jerusalem to produce immediate results, American and Israeli officials hope that it could prepare the ground for a deal that would further weaken Russian ties to Iran and reduce, if not terminate, Iran’s presence in Syria.

The Jewish institutions inviting me to lecture run the gamut of North American Jewish culture: from liberal progressive, as in Reform temples, to Orthodox and even haredi milieus. I am invited by Jewish organizations such as IAC and asked to speak to them in Hebrew. On every tour, I meet people with diverse opinions, hear varied approaches to issues and listen to complex ideas.

Jordan’s King Abdullah reacts angrily to any suggestion that he might accept a US deal to end the Arab-Israeli conflict that would make his country a homeland for Palestinians.

Speaking to the armed forces, he rejected the idea of Jordan as an alternative state for Palestinians, saying: “Don’t we have a voice in the end?” Already facing economic discontent at home, Abdullah must navigate diplomatic moves by his US allies that are upturning a regional status-quo that has underpinned Jordan’s internal politics and foreign relations for decades.

After Israel’s creation in 1948 Jordan absorbed more Palestinians than any other country, with some estimates that they now account for more than half the population.

US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman set off some alarm bells last weekend by telling The New York Times that: “Under certain circumstances, I think Israel has the right to retain some, but unlikely all, of the West Bank.”

It’s not clear why this comment should raise eyebrows, since US policy and all previous rounds of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations have been based on this very possibility, indeed likelihood.

Perhaps some unfriendly types were upset because Friedman speaks not only of settlement realities that must be considered when calculating the possibilities for Israeli-Palestinian accommodation, but also of Jewish Israeli rights to live in the historic heartland of Israel. That is certainly a change of tone, and hopefully of US policy, too.
