Changes in the wind for Egypt?

According to article 140, presidents were to be elected for a four-year term and could be reelected for only one more term as is in the case in the United States.

BY ZVI MAZEL , JPOST

Should the proposed constitutional amendments now being discussed by the parliament be adopted – as it appears they will, the people of Egypt will find themselves living in a regime quite unlike the one they voted for in 2014.

Following the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi and the army takeover on July 3, 2013 led by then-defense minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, a constitution was drafted under his aegis and adopted by an overwhelming majority.

It provided for the traditional division of powers between the executive, legislative and judicial branches as well as checks and balances between the prerogatives of the president and those of parliament.

According to article 140, presidents were to be elected for a four-year term and could be reelected for only one more term as is in the case in the United States.

Bennett: Netanyahu, Trump plan to establish a Palestinian state

T. BELMAN. THE ONLY PALESTINIAN STATE THAT WILL BE CREATED BY AGREEMENT IS jORDAN.. IT HAS 78% OF THE MANDATE LANDS.

Minister claims “Netanyahu and Trump are in agreement on launching plan for Palestinian state immediately after elections.” Likud denies.

Arutz Sheva Staff,

Minister Naftali Bennett weighed in on the Trump peace plan as he entered Sunday’s cabinet meeting. He claimed that a plan to establish a Palestinian state will be presented immediately after elections.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Trump are in agreement on launching the plan to establish a Palestinian state immediately after the elections,” he said.

“They are coordinated not to present the plan before the elections so as not to make it difficult for Netanyahu, but a day or two after the elections the plan for the establishment of a Palestinian state on 90% of the area and the division of Jerusalem will be presented.

“Lapid and Gantz will enter the government as a national peace government. The only way to stop this is with a strong and real New Right,” he said.

Likud blasted the assertion, calling it a “complete invention with no connection to reality. After the elections Netanyahu will establish a right-wing government headed by himself.”

‘Staggering’ eviction of 1 million indigenous people

Ted Belman. If India can do it so can Israel.

Indian Court tells gvmt to evict over 1 million indigenous from homes in public forest land who had ‘not met legal criterion to live there’.

By Mordechai Sones, ARUTZ SHEVA

India

India’s Supreme Court has ordered its government to evict a million people from their homes for the good of the country’s wildlife.

The Washington Post reported the ruling, issued Wednesday, concluded a decade-long case that pitted some of India’s most vulnerable citizens’ rights against the preservation of its forests.

The court told the government to evict over one million members of indigenous tribes from their homes in public forest land “because they had not met the legal criterion to live there”, reported the Post.

Pat Condell warns of Progressives taking away the first amendment

By Phil Schneider

Progressives today have more power and influence than almost any other time in recent history. Under the guise of liberalism, the thought police attitude has become a prevalent attitude among tens of millions of college age youth and recent graduates.

Yes, things have spun out of control, and something needs to be done about it.

Moshe Feiglin says his Zehut party will be ‘surprise’ of April election

ISRAEL HAYOM

Zehut party leader Moshe Feiglin says he sees no difference between Meretz, New Right and Yesh Atid • Zehut will get youth vote, he says • Announcing party’s Knesset list, Yisrael Beytenu head Lieberman says he hopes to make double-digit Knesset seats.

In an interview with Israel Hayom, Feiglin, who in the past ran for leadership of the Likud party, said, “We are not just talking about the electoral threshold, looking at the momentum we have created, we can be much more than that.”

Feiglin is dismissive of recent polls that do not bode well for Zehut.

“The polls don’t know how to model politicians like myself or parties like Zehut because we bring dialogue to Israeli politics,” he said. “I don’t see a difference in the political perception of [New Right party leader Naftali] Bennett, [Meretz party leader Tamar] Zandberg or [Yesh Atid party leader Yair] Lapid. They all say the same thing in the end. I walk around and see that the young people are drifting and that people understand that I bring [with me] a new [kind of] politics, and that is why they will vote for me.”

The Palestinian Authority Is in Meltdown – Its all part of Trump’s plan

If Gaza hostilities don’t flare up by summer, it will be a major achievement for Israel’s army chief

By Amos Harel, HAARETZ

Foreign diplomats voiced the following warning to their Israeli interlocutors, who are preoccupied with the dramatic developments in the election campaign: The security cabinet’s decision to slash half-a-billion shekels ($140 million) from the taxes that Israel collects for the Palestinian Authority, combined with the growing instability in Gaza, greatly increase the possibility of a flare-up in the territories in the near future.

The security cabinet, under severe political constraints, decided after a delay of six months to implement legislation stipulating that the amount of money the PA pays to security prisoners jailed in Israel be subtracted from the funds transferred to the Palestinians. (The cut doesn’t apply to the larger sum the PA pays to the families of Palestinians killed by Israel, among them many terrorists.) The payment reduction could trigger a domino effect, as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas intends to slash the funds transferred to Gaza by the same ratio.

Both America and Israel are struggling to reject socialism and the deep state

By Ted Belman.

Mordechai Nisan wrote Only Israel West of the River and had it published in 2011. This book is a classic and should be read by everyone. He wrote with such clarity and logic that its hard to dispute him. As a result, I invited him to speak at the conference on The Jordan Option.

He has now written The Crack-Up of the Israeli Left. It is a precious book, in fact, an intellectual tour de force. Hardly a paragraph exists that doesn’t contain some nugget of value.

This book is way more than a recount of the crack-up of the Israeli left. In fact, it is an intellectual history of Israel and its transformation from as “socialist utopia” some hundred years ago to the present day where is it is one of the most successful capitalist countries in the world notwithstanding that it has yet to shuck all its socialist baggage.

Bolton’s partial victory in Syria

T. Belman. It bothers me that the US mission in Syria is still described by Defense as the destroying of ISIS rather than the stopping of Iran.

Instead of the full withdrawal the president promised, the United States will leave several hundred troops in Syria.

John Bolton, the U.S. national security advisor and longtime Iran hawk, has won a crucial victory with the partial reversal of President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw all U.S. troops from Syria.

In an apparent softening of Trump’s abrupt announcement last December that the United States would pull out completely from Syria—a move that blindsided U.S. allies and prompted the resignation of his defense secretary, James Mattis—the administration now concedes that a small force of roughly 400 troops will remain in the country.

Fighting in the trenches of this cultural war

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]For a Canadian “Festival of Literary Diversity,” some cultures are more equal than others.

By Howard Rotberg, FPM

For over 15 years, I have been operating a small publishing house, which is Canada’s sole conservative and pro-Israel publishing house. We publish some of the greatest Canadian, American and international authors who support fundamental freedoms, liberty, justice and individual rights as opposed to group rights. Our authors generally oppose cultural and moral relativism, and for that reason they are generally shunned by leftist publishing houses who naively believe that all cultures are equal.

I am the son of a Holocaust survivor who lost his parents and then eight-year-old sister in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. When someone tells me that all cultures are equal, I ask if the person believes that the culture of Nazi Germany or of ISIS is equal to the culture of Canada or the United States. The person usually walks away at that point. Read more…

Center-left Blue and White list leads polls with 36 seats

Ted Belman. Its way too early to poll everybody after all the jockying for mergers. These polls suggest that the Right isn’t growing as they always claim. Generally the party with the most seats is invited to form a government. But the left can’t form a gofvernment without including the Arab parties. You can bet that the Right parties will harp on this and I expect that it will mean a drop off of the support for the left during the campaign.

Polls show new center-left list in first place, six to 10 seats ahead of the Likud under PM Netanyahu • Labor, which spurned merger with Meretz, drops to single digits • Kan 11 poll: Arab Ta’al-Hadash list will be third-largest party in the Knesset.

Israel Hayom Staff

Telem party leader Moshe Ya’alon, Israel Resilience leader Benny Gantz, Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid and former IDF chief Gabi Ashkenazi announce the new Blue and White list, Thursday

Following the announcement Thursday morning that former IDF chief Benny Gantz’s Israel Resilience Party had reached a deal with Yesh Atid to run on a joint ticket, the country’s TV stations rushed to poll the public.

According to polls by Channels 12 and 13, if the election were held today, the new joint list, known as Blue and White, would win 36 seats. A Kan 11 News polls projected 35 seats for the Blue and White list.

Israel’s first lunar-bound spacecraft successfully blasted off early Friday morning, embarking on a seven-week trip to land on the moon. If the privately funded Beresheet project is successful, Israel will become just the fourth country to land a spacecraft on the moon.

Beresheet lifted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida at 3:45 a.m. Israel time (8:45 p.m. Thursday EST), catching a ride on one of Elon Musk’s SpaceX commercial space launches.

Israel hopes to become the fourth country in the world to land a spacecraft on the moon, with the launch of the unmanned spacecraft Beresheet from Florida’s Cape Canaveral this Friday. If successful, the 160-kilogram (350 pounds without fuel), four-legged spacecraft will also be the smallest and cheapest spacecraft to land on the moon.

The $100 million (NIS 370 million) spacecraft is a joint venture between private companies SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries, funded almost entirely from private donations from well-known Jewish philanthropists including South African billionaire Morris Kahn, Miriam and Sheldon Adelson, Lynn Schusterman, and others.

INTO THE FRAY: Gantz & Lapid’s “Blue and White” – A fragile, directionless, ad hoc political concoction

By Martin Sherman

The purported electoral appeal of the Blue & White line-up is that it includes 3 former IDF Chiefs-of-Staff, yet virtually invariably when top military figures have departed from their field of expertise (security) & ventured into one where they have none (politics), they have been disastrously wrong.

The greatest tragedy of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is that everyone knows how it will end. We will divide up the region. Israel will return most of the West Bank, and the Palestinian flag will fly on public buildings in east Jerusalem…The only unanswered question is how many more people will have to die along the way. And so we will fight against the extremists on both sides, including our extremists, the settlers. – Yair Lapid, Der Spiegel, May 8, 2008.

Israel jettisons PLO as negotiating partner on Trump peace plan

Israel jettisons PLO as negotiating partner on Trump peace plan

Israel’s decision to withhold US$138 million dollars in tax revenues collected for the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) – equalling the estimated annual payments made to Palestinian Arabs (or their families) carrying out random and indiscriminate attacks against Israeli civilians—marks a watershed in Israel-PLO relations.

Israel’s action will see the PLO being finally jettisoned as a possible negotiating partner on President Trump’s long-delayed peace plan—deferred yet again until after the Israeli elections in April.

The absurdity of land swaps

By Victor Rosenthal

Recent hints about what might be in Donald Trump’s deal of deals indicate that it includes Israel annexing parts of Judea and Samaria containing major settlement blocks, in return for “land swaps” in which a Palestinian entity would receive land that is presently within the Green Line.

I am not sure where the idea first surfaced, but it was included in the Clinton Parameters, the offer made at the 2000 Camp David summit, which was rejected by the PLO.

ZOA writes to Pelosi about antisemitism in Democratic Party

The following is a letter from Morton Klein, President of the National Zionist Organization of America to Nancy Pelosi:

Dear Madam Speaker,

We are writing to you to express our profound, even frightened concern and, indeed, our pained astonishment that you have decided to appoint newly-elected legislator, Representative Ihlan Omar, to the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

We cannot believe that Representative Omar has been appointed to the Committee on the strength on any particular expertise or competence she holds in foreign affairs.

We do know, however, that Representative Omar has a horrific and frightening record of viciously anti-Israel actions that amount to antisemitism as defined by the State Department definition of antisemitism as determined in its May 2016 document, ‘Defining antisemitism.’
