Israel’s accomplishments have been remarkable. Israel has created a thriving economy, and has been a refuge for hundreds of thousands of the displaced and the needy. Israel has generated a rich and diverse cultural life and its scientific and educational achievements have been exemplary. In spite of these achievements, however, Israel in my view has gone astray…sadly, after a life and career devoted to Jewish community and Israel, I conclude that in every important way Israel has failed to realize its promise for me. Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick, according to multiple media outlets.

Trump campaign aides on Twitter said the presumptive GOP presidential nominee has yet to make a decision, but separate media reports said the conservative governor has emerged as Trump’s choice.

Pence had been on a final shortlist for the spot along with former Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.) and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, according to Trump. He was also the overwhelming favorite of GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

Amid the intrigue and speculation over the upcoming Republican National Convention (RNC) in Cleveland, one item that the party has settled is its firm support for Israel and opposition to a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

On Tuesday, the Republican Platform Committee unanimously approved a number of significant changes to its platform in an attempt to further set the party’s pro-Israel credentials apart from the Democrats, who are facing concerns over their party’s future support for the Jewish state. The GOP’s platform changes included removing language encouraging a two-state solution as well as reinstating a reference to an “undivided” Israel that was previously included in the party’s 2008 platform, but was removed in 2012.

A bill prescribing jail terms to people who discourage Christian Arabs from joining the military service or persuading them to desert has been approved by a Knesset committee, prompting activists to speak out against it, saying it violates the Arabs’ freedom of expression.

The said bill, which gained opposition from the Joint List of Arab parties, was approved by the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee last week. Arab MKs contend that the controversial bill could be used to suppress the debate on whether Arab Christians should join the army, Haaretz reports.

Israeli military bulldozers backed by tanks have crossed into the demilitarized zone dividing the Israeli and Syrian Golan borders. They are building a line of fortifications and anti-tank trenches 300-500 meters inside the DMZ.

This is the first time in the six-year Syrian war that the IDF has openly operated on the Syrian side of the border. The force has not so far run into opposition- or indeed any word of protest – or even mention – by Assad regime officials in Damascus.

That same day — as revealed by Pentagon audio tapes obtained by the Washington Times — President Qaddafi’s son Seif tried to call a US general to try to negotiate a ceasefire.

Every now and then — on Israel and Palestine, for example — the US military brass takes the term “national security” literally and needs to be set straight by civilian leaders. Never mind that the UN resolution had urged diplomacy, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton instructed the Joint Chiefs of Staff not to negotiate with the Libyan government.

The American Freedom Law Center (AFLC) is filing a federal lawsuit today in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, challenging Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA) under the First Amendment. In a press release, he AFLC explained that “Section 230 provides immunity from lawsuits to Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, thereby permitting these social media giants to engage in government-sanctioned censorship and discriminatory business practices free from legal challenge.” The lawsuit was brought on behalf of the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, and Jihad Watch.

At the annual gathering of Iranians outside of Paris, France on 9 July 2016, where some 100,000 showed up to express support for regime change in Tehran, one of the guest speakers dropped a bombshell announcement. Even before he took the podium, Prince Turki bin Faisal Al-Saud, appearing in the distinctive gold-edged dark cloak and white keffiyeh headdress of the Saudi royal family, of which he is a senior member, drew commentary and lots of second looks. The Prince is the founder of the King Faisal Foundation, and chairman of the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, and served from 1977-2001 as director general of Al-Mukhabarat Al-A’amah, Saudi Arabia’s intelligence agency, resigning the position on 1 September 2001, some ten days before the attacks of 9/11.

An elementary school textbook calls the 1948 establishment of Israel a “disaster,” and a high school text tells of the “End of Days” when “Muslims fight the Jews,” among other examples in a report from the Center for Near East Policy, a pro-Israel research institute based in Jerusalem.

The agency—the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA—has come under scrutiny for years for supplying Palestinian schools with textbooks containing violent, anti-Israel references.

If you want a measure of the peculiarity of our time, consider this.

On Monday, our colleague and contributor Jeff Dunetz reported the new language on Israel proposed for the Republican Party platform for 2016.

The short story on it is that the new language doesn’t make explicit reference to a “two-state solution”: i.e., an affirmation that there should be a “Palestinian state” alongside the nation of Israel.

The platforms of 2004, 2008, and 2012 made such affirmations.  But the committee preparing the 2016 platform’s section on Israel voted 14-2 in favor of new language, which simply affirms that the arrangement must be worked out by the parties themselves.  It does not speak of a “Palestinian state” as a GOP priority.

The Washington Free Beacon” revealed last week, that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) tried to get the Republicans to weaken the pro-Israel language in the Republican Party’s platform in 2012 so the Republican Party would not seem to be more pro-Israel than the Democrats. AIPAC is looking to do it to the GOP again in 2016.

On Monday a platform subcommittee created even stronger language than 2012 but two sources, Alan Clemmons (who introduced the language to the platform committee) and a second source who was working closely with the delegates who voted today (and who asked to remain anonymous) has heard rumblings that AIPAC is working on a full court press to roll back the pro-Israel language before the full platform committee votes on Tuesday.
