The Real Goal of the Nuclear Deal: Iran Détente

By Jonathan S. Tobin, COMMENTARY

To listen to President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry defend their nuclear deal in recent weeks, you’d think the issue at stake is a narrow one that solely concerned whether or not the agreement retards Tehran’s quest for a bomb. The assumption from the administration and its apologists that the deal does this even minimally is a dubious one. But one of the subtexts of the misleading way they have been conducting their end of this debate is their effort to distract both Congress and the public from the broader goals of the pact. While critics of the deal have highlighted Obama’s refusal to make the sanctions relief dependent on an end to support for terrorism, ballistic missile production or the nature of Iranian government, the answers from the administration have been consistent. They want to restrict the discussion to purely technical nuclear issues that can be obfuscated by deceptive claims or to the false choice between the agreement and war. But, to its credit, one of the president’s chief media cheerleaders did highlight the real goals of the administration in an article published on Friday. The New York Times feature titled “Deeper Aspirations Seen in Nuclear Deal With Iran” ought to be required reading for all members of the House and Senate.

The choice here isn’t one between a flawed nuclear deal and war, but between Iran détente with a tyrannical, anti-Semitic, aggressive Islamist regime and a reboot of the diplomatic process that has been hijacked by appeasers.

The Turkish Attacks in Syria: An About-Face by Ankara?

By Gallia Lindenstrauss, INSS

The strikes by the Turkish air force in Syria, which began on July 24, 2015, along with Turkey’s intention to establish a safe zone in northwestern Syria, inspired the headline “Turkey Joins the Coalition against the Islamic State,” even though Turkey has already been a member of this coalition since it was founded in 2014. However, Turkey’s partners in the coalition, particularly the United States, have thus far been dissatisfied with Ankara’s contribution to the campaign, and with the fact that until now, volunteers joining the Islamic State have been able to cross the border between Turkey and Syria fairly easily. Furthermore, the Islamic State has been aided by private parties in Turkey (there may also have been more institutionalized cooperation) that have bought oil from it and assisted in the supply and transport of the Islamic State’s logistical needs.

Mainstream Israel Promotes Integration Despite the Lunatic Fringe

By Evelyn Gordon, COMMENTARY

According to a front-page story in today’s Haaretz, everything you thought you knew about the Jewish terrorists suspected of perpetrating last week’s horrific murder of a Palestinian baby is wrong. The accepted wisdom, propagated by everyone from Israeli President Reuven Rivlin to Haaretz’s own editorial pages, is that the terrorists are motivated by a “climate of incitement,” in which extremist statements by right-wing rabbis and politicians lead them to believe that anything, even murder, is permissible to achieve their goals. But Israel’s premier counterterrorism agency – which, unlike espousers of the accepted wisdom, has spent years studying the terrorists up close – doesn’t buy it.

Senior American official: If Iran attacks Israel, US will protect it

Following nuclear deal with Iran, Washington tries to ease Israel’s fears; official states Israel’s military qualitative edge will be ensured, adding: ‘US intelligence will check Iranian compliance with laser accuracy’.

Itamar Eichner, Roi Kais, YNET

F-35If Israel is attacked by Iran, the United States will protect it, a senior US official said in a press briefing on Monday.

“We live this commitment every day, it’s something we do for Israel on a daily basis,” he said. “We have a relationship of allies and the word ally has meaning for us. It means that if you are attacked we will defend you as we would a NATO member.”

According to the official, the US is “shocked” by the Iranian leadership’s calls to destroy Israel after the signing of the agreement.

PALIN: Trump stumps media kingmakers

by Sarah Palin, Breitbart

What a hoot to watch pundits clutching their pearls and whimpering for smelling salts aghast over the latest “shocking” thing Donald Trump said, while The Donald ignores them and continues to soar. Silly kingmakers just don’t know what to make of this. Well, we do!

The elites are shocked by Trump’s dominance, but everyday Americans aren’t. Everywhere I’ve gone this summer, including motorsport events in Detroit full of fed up Joe Six-Pack Americans, the folks I meet commiserate about wussified slates of politicians, but then unsolicited, they whisper their appreciation for Trump because he has the guts to say it like it is.

Meng (D) and Vargas (D) eloquently reject the deal

ZOA Praises Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY) and Congressman Juan Vargas (D-CA) for Publicly Opposing the Catastrophic Iran Deal
NEW YORK, August 3, 2015 — The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) praises Democratic Congresswoman Grace Meng and Democratic Congressman Juan Vargas for standing up for America, Israel and our other allies’ security, with clear-thinking, strong, non-partisan statements publicly opposing the catastrophic Iran deal (formally know as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA).

Congresswoman Grace Meng represents New York’s 6th Congressional District, and is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and its Subcommittee on the Middle East.   Congressman Juan Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District.   The leaders and members of the ZOA Chapters served by these Congresspersons – the ZOA-Long Island-Queens Chapter and ZOA-California-Western Region – would also like to specially praise Congresspersons Meng and Vargas.

Congresswoman Meng issued the following articulate, persuasive statement on July 29, 2015:

APPROVAL FOR OBAMA’S IRAN DEAL CRATERS IN THE POLLS

BREITBART

The polling on President Obama’s lousy Iran deal just keeps getting worse.  The lies and deceptions from Obama’s team are so thick that only by watching the Iranian victory parade can Americans learn what the deal actually says.

Secretary of State John Kerry’s disastrous performances before Congress might just be the worst “sales pitch” in modern history.  Few of the GOP candidates for president have done as much damage to the deal as Kerry has.

The result is a new Quinnipiac poll that shows an astonishing 57 percent disapproval for the Iran deal, with only 28 percent in favor.  That’s a 2-1 margin of opposition.  Furthermore, respondents said by a margin of 58-30 that the deal would “make the world less safe.”

I will not apologize

Dr Chaim Shine, ISRAEL HAYOM

As a member of the right-wing camp, I will not apologize for things I did not do. The criminal acts of last week have been properly condemned by our country’s leaders. I will not let the hostile media and manipulative politicians tear Israeli society apart by promoting their narrow agendas, which have been rejected by voters time and time again.

Media mouthpieces of the socialist Left will not force me to beg for forgiveness for murders committed by serial offenders and wicked individuals. Even demonstrations attended by hundreds, which the media turned into thousands, will not compel me to change the foundations of my ideology, an ideology based on the Ten Commandments, including, “Thou shalt not kill.”

What Kurds think about Rouhani’s visit and promises in iRAN Kurdistan

T. Belman. I am reading The Devil we Know by Robert Baer which I highly recommend. In it I learned that Iran has a good relationship with Iraqi Kurdistan and Birzani in particular. Iran supplies them with weapons to fight ISIS. Thus Iran has great influence if not control of Iraq Kurdistan and Shiite Iraq. Together they control most of Iraq’s oil.

By Ava Homa, RUDAW

LOS ANGELES, USA – In his country’s Kurdish heartland, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani made new promises to his country’s millions of Kurds last week. He promised they would receive long-awaited permission to study in their own language at state universities, and better infrastructure in what are Iran’s most neglected regions.

Speaking in Sanandaj (Sina), the capital city of Iranian Kurdistan on his first visit to the province after two years in office, Rouhani promised 11 dams built over the next two years, and said he would look into building new roads.

The EU’s Choice of Labels: “Made in West Bank” and “Antisemite”

FIRST ONE THROUGH

The European Union has taken upon itself to challenge the labelling of products that are made east of the Green Line as “Made in Israel”.   They should consider international norms and the Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestinians before doing so.

“Made in USA” in US Territories

It is common practice for countries that have territories that are not incorporated into the country, to label products produced in those locations as being made in the country. For example, products produced in American Samoa (say for Sears Department stores) sport the “Made in USA” label even though the products were produced thousands of miles away from US shores on an island that was never part of the country by non-US citizens.

After Iran deal: Israel trying to thwart move to monitor its nuclear program

Non-binding resolution could cause Israel great diplomatic damage, focus international attention on Israel’s nuclear program and prompt further IAEA action.

By Barak Ravid, HAARETZ

Over the past two weeks, Israel has begun a diplomatic campaign to thwart a resolution to subject its nuclear facilities to international supervision. The resolution, which is being pushed by Egypt and other Arab and Muslim states, will come up for a vote at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s General Conference in mid-September.

A senior Foreign Ministry official said he feared the recent nuclear deal between Iran and the six powers will make it hard for Israel to defeat the resolution.

The resolution, titled “Israeli nuclear capabilities,” has been repeatedly proposed by Egypt in recent years. It condemns Israel, demands that it open its reported nuclear facilities to IAEA inspection, and calls for an international conference on making the Middle East a nuclear-weapons-free zone.

Government’s ignorance of the propaganda war against Israel

By Manfred Gerstenfeld, JPOST

Out of 400 million adult citizens of the European Union, over 150 million believe Israel is conducting a war of extermination against the Palestinians. Opinion polls conducted over the past decade back up these figures.

When mentioning this I am often asked if I have ever discussed this issue with Israeli government officials.

In response, I relate the sad experiences I’ve gone through over the past few years. Others had repeatedly told me many years earlier how difficult it was to convince government officials to fight back against the tsunami of verbal attacks which Israel endures. One example, among many, was during a 2005 interview with Johannes Gerster, a former member of the German parliament.

‘Peace for our time’

The Iran nuclear deal surrenders to the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism.

By Amb R. James Woolsey and Dr. Peter V. Pry, INN

Banner headlines in a prominent national newspaper read “NUKE DEAL PAVES WAY FOR NEW ERA: Sworn Foes U.S., Iran Aim To Bury Hatchet” — without sarcasm. For critics of the Iran nuclear deal, such undeserved praise is ominously reminiscent of the adulatory press that greeted British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and his ill-fated Munich agreement, upon returning from meeting Adolph Hitler in Nazi Germany on the eve of World War II, declaring, “Peace for our time.”

Critics of the Iran nuclear deal are right — it is a very bad deal. It surrenders to the world’s leading sponsor of international terrorism the right to enrich uranium and the technological pathway to eventually build nuclear weapons, and intercontinental missiles to deliver them, on a mass industrial scale, just as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the U.S. Congress on March 3, 2015.

A majority of House lawmakers now support a resolution to reject the recently signed nuclear agreement with Iran, marking another blow to the White House’s aggressive push to convince Congress to back the deal, according to sources on Capitol Hill.

At least 218 Republican lawmakers have signed on to support a resolution expressing “firm disapproval” of the nuclear deal, which would provide Iran with billions of dollars in sanctions relief while enabling it to continue work on ballistic missiles and other nuclear research.

The measure, which is being led by Rep. Peter Roskam (R., Ill) and was first reported by theWashington Free Beacon, comes as Congress takes 60 days to review the deal before voting on it.

Iran’s Link to Al-Qaeda: The 9-11 Commission’s Evidence

Middle East Quarterly
Fall 2004, pp. 71-74

MIDDLE EAST FORUM

While the State Department’s Patterns of Global Terrorism2003 report [1] labeled Iran “the most active state sponsor of terrorism in 2003,” the Bush administration has yet to agree on a national security presidential directive to define U.S. policy toward the Islamic Republic.[2] Meanwhile, Tehran continues to edge closer to nuclear capability.[3]

The following are excerpts from the 9/11 Commission Report, an unclassified version of which was released to the public on July 22, 2004.[4] The commission interviewed more than 1,000 people in ten countries and conducted an unprecedented review of U.S. intelligence. Among its findings, excerpted below, was evidence of a significant and continuing relationship between al-Qaeda and the Islamic Republic of Iran.—The Editors

IRAN IS KILLING AMERICANS AND THEIR ALLIES

Why is Obama empowering Iran with $150 Billion and in time nuclear weapons and the means to delivering them given Iran’s history of killing Americans and consistently calling for Death to America? Why?

By Colonel (ret.) Richard Kemp and Major (ret.) Chris Driver-Williams, JCPA March 2015

Preface

Iranian-supplied weapons have led to casualties across the Western alliance for Britain, Israel, and the United States. Tehran has used its weapons deliveries to fuel a number of regional insurgencies, like the Houthi revolt in Yemen.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps and its Hizbullah proxy serve as expeditionary forces for Iran throughout the Middle East, with the latter coordinating terror attacks and fundraising activities in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

State-of-the-art roadside bombs — Explosively Formed Penetrators (EFPs) — from Iran in particular were undoubtedly the most lethal Iranian weapon used against British and American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thus the analysis that follows by two former British officers is of extreme importance to anyone concerned with halting the destabilization of the Middle East and the future security of the region.

– Amb. Dore Gold

Executive Summary

  • Iranian military action, often working through proxies using terrorist tactics, has led to the deaths of well over a thousand American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan over the last decade and a half.
  • Throughout the course of the Iraq campaign, a variety of weapons flowed into the country through direct purchases by the government of Iran. These included Explosively Formed Penetrators (EFPs), a shaped charge designed to penetrate armor. These weapons – often camouflaged as rocks – were identical to those employed by Hizbullah against Israeli forces. In 2006, the British Telegraph revealed that three Iranian factories were “mass producing” the roadside EFP bombs used to kill soldiers in Iraq.
  • In 2007, American troops discovered over 100 Austrian-made Steyr HS50 .50 caliber sniper rifles in Iraq. These high-powered rifles, which fire Iranian bullets, can pierce all in-service body armor from up to a mile and penetrate U.S. armored Humvee troop carriers. The rifles were part of a larger shipment legally purchased from the Austrian manufacturer under the justification that they would be used by Iranian police to combat drug smugglers.
  • Iran paid Taliban fighters $1,000 for each U.S. soldier they killed in Afghanistan. TheSunday Times reported that a Taliban operative received $18,000 from an Iranian firm in Kabul as reward for an attack in 2010 that killed several Afghan government troops and destroyed an American armored vehicle.
  • Iranian President Rouhani’s so-called “moderation” was displayed when he appointed Brig.-Gen. Hossein Dehghan to be minister of defense. Dehghan played a key role in the October 1983 suicide bomb attacks in Beirut in which 241 U.S. Marines and 58 French paratroopers were killed. Meanwhile, inside Iran, Rouhani has presided over a rise in repression, including executions, torture of political prisoners, and persecution of minorities.

Pamela Geller, woman extraordinaire

T. Belman.  I met Pamela in the spring of 2008 in New York City. We were both attending a pro-Israel lecture. We also attended a CAMERA Annual Dinner as guests of Eli Hertz and sat at his table. Pamela and I were both fighting the election of Obama by writing the truth. Pamela went on to write, along with Robert Spencer, The Post American President. And that is not all she did.

She went on to establish herself as one of  the most pre-eminent critics of Islamization. Everything she writes is based on the facts. Her many critics distort what she says and lie about her. Even threaten her.

She literally has dedicated her life to defending America and Israel and truth.

Over the years, we have kept in touch. I pray for her safety.
