The Biden administration is under pressure from a coalition of outside advocacy groups to cut American funding to the United Nations over the international organization’s appointment of Iran to several leadership positions.

“Following Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel, it is reckless for the United States to continue funding the United Nations while Iran abuses its position on several UN committees, conferences, and forums,” a group of 20 foreign policy experts and think tanks wrote to the White House on Thursday, according to a copy of the letter obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

The terrorist Iranian regime’s unprecedented recent attack on Israel, which included 185 drones, 36 cruise missiles, and 110 surface-to-surface missiles, is an unambiguous casus belli — an act of war — under international law.

Of course, Iranian proxies spread across the Middle East, such as Lebanon-based Hezbollah, Gaza-based Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and the Yemen-based Houthis, have committed countless previous acts of war against Israel. But last weekend was something different entirely: For the very first time since fanatical Islamists overthrew Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and took power in 1979, Iran launched such attacks directly from its own soil.

On April 13, 2024, Iran, deploying more than 300 drones and missiles, launched a premeditated aerial assault on Israeli military and population centers. While ninety-nine percent of the weapons were intercepted, Irans’s attack is equivalent to a formal “Declaration of War” against Israel.

Since 1979 and the Iranian revolution, Iran and Israel have been undeclared enemies as Iran has used its proxy terrorist groups in the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen to attack Israel. The Key to Both Goals Is Going After Hamas in Rafah

In the wake of Iran’s attack on Israel with hundreds of drones and missiles last weekend, Israel must decide how to calibrate its response. The spectrum of possible actions is wide and includes strikes on Iranian interests outside Iran and targets inside its borders.

Israeli leaders faced a similar decision after the Hamas attacks of October 7. Back then, the question was whether they should respond to the Hamas attack primarily by sending troops to Gaza with the goal of ending Hamas’s domination of that territory and its ability to threaten Israel militarily, or also (or instead) pursue Israel’s more powerful and dangerous adversary to the north, the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah—even though it was not directly involved in the October 7 attacks. Israel chose the first option, a decision that has shaped the conflict to this point.

I left my laptop at home. However, the news would not let me desist from writing. So my wife Denise traveled 90 minutes back home to retrieve the laptop, 90 minutes back to drop it off with me, and now I write.

Mike explains why a defensive strategy can never defeat an offensive dominant one. Egyptian officials tell a Qatari outlet that the US has accepted Israel’s plan for an operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, in return for not carrying out a large strike in Iran in response to Tehran’s unprecedented missile and drone attack.

“The American administration showed acceptance of the plan previously presented by the occupation government regarding the military operation in Rafah, in exchange for not carrying out a large-scale attack against Iran,” an unnamed official tells Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.
