The Israel Defence Forces have been attacking Hamas in Gaza from land, sea and air for two weeks now, following a three-week air campaign. Before ground operations began, US military advisers urged the Israelis not to launch a large-scale campaign, which they believed would result in an IDF bloodbath – and be less effective than a combination of air strikes and special forces raids. The IDF rejected that advice, and moved into Gaza with a large combined arms force. And it has confounded its critics.

The war in Gaza entered its 35th day this morning, November 10 – one day more than the 2006 Lebanon war, which at the time was described as a frustrating stalemate in which Israel found it difficult to vanquish the enemy, Hezbollah. The circumstances this time, in a war that is currently focused on Hamas, are harder.

Israel went into the war with a terrible deficit, as a result of a harrowing intelligence and preparedness failure on October 7. By the time the Israel Defense Forces recovered and started to fight back effectively, nearly 1,200 Israelis had already been killed and about 240 abducted in Hamas’ murderous terrorist onslaught. Since then, all that has been done, and will be done, is comparable to a desperate attempt to pursue a foe that has already turned on the burners and is speeding ahead.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant repeats in a press statement that Israel will not stop the fighting against the Hamas terror group in Gaza until the at least 239 captives held in the Strip are returned.

He notes the dozens of kids abducted and held by “animals,” vowing: “We won’t stop the fighting until we get them back. What father stops looking for their children? I see them as my own kids.”

You’d think the Biden Administration would have realized by now that enriching the Iranian regime is a dangerous mistake. You’d be wrong. Relaxed U.S. enforcement of oil sanctions continued through October, refilling Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s coffers even after the Oct. 7 slaughter and the more than 40 attacks on U.S. troops by Iran’s proxies in the weeks since.

What we have to see is Gaza de-militarized, de-radicalized, and rebuilt.  And all of that could be achieved.  We don’t seek to conquer Gaza, we don’t seek to occupy Gaza, and we don’t seek to govern Gaza.  We will have to find a civilian govt that will be there but in the foreseeable future, we have to make sure that this doesn’t happen again.  So we have to have a credible force, that if necessary will enter Gaza and kill the killers because that is what will prevent the reemergence of a Hamas-like entity.  But what I expect to see is a rebuilt Gaza for the Gazans.”

T.Belman. To the extent that these “pauses” facilitate the exodus southward, I support them. But I don’t trust Bibi to prevent the Gazans from returning. So far, Israeli spokepersons have said they will be allowed to return. This must not be.

Israel has agreed to formalize and broaden localized pauses in the IDF’s fighting in Gaza for the first time since the outbreak of the war against Hamas, a senior Israeli official told The Times of Israel on Thursday.

The “tactical, localized” pauses that Israel agreed on Thursday to implement each day will build on the humanitarian corridor that it began operating on Sunday to allow Gazans to evacuate from northern to southern Gaza, away from the most intense areas of fighting, the senior Israeli official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Although the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) operate in accordance with international treaties and the Geneva Conventions, the media and international left spread misinformation by lying about lawful operations and accusing Israel of engaging in “occupation” and indiscriminate killing of civilians. Because all of Gaza is a “large armed terrorist encampment” under Hamas control, shutting off services in a siege is the “proper way” to conduct an offensive, not a war crime.
