The brutal Hamas massacre on October 7 was preceded by months of warning signs noted by IDF surveillance soldiers and disregarded as unimportant by intelligence officials, according to eyewitness accounts given in recent days.

At least three months prior to the attack, surveillance soldiers serving on a base in Nahal Oz reported signs that something unusual was underway at the already-tumultuous Gaza border, situated a kilometer from them.

The small, cheap, and technologically simple drones used by Hamas in the October 7 attack caused major damage. Clearly, Israel was not adequately prepared to confront the threat posed by the “poor man’s air force” possessed by terrorist organizations. What conclusions should Israel draw from this lapse, and to what other areas do they apply?

It is imperative to examine ways of dealing with this threat and other readily available technologies that could also pose strategic threats, for example, AI (artificial intelligence) applications.

• The hundreds of millions of dollars the Qataris have given Hamas during the past decade have been instrumental in helping the terrorist group to develop the infrastructure that enabled it to carry out its murderous assault on Israel in the first place.
• Qatar would like the world to believe that it is acting as an honest broker with its efforts to secure the release of the Gaza captives. But the reality is that it deserves to be condemned by the West as a state that sponsors global terrorism, so long as it maintains its indefensible support for Hamas.

I grew up in a tiny Jewish enclave on Chicago’s South Side. When I first saw New York, in the Sixties, I was awed as by no subsequent marvel of nature: stretching north from Columbus Circle, up the West Side, was a Jewish metropolis.

New York, in my lifetime, had always been a Jewish city: the rhythms, the accent, the humour always felt to me like home. Because they were home. The populace, of whatever ethnicity, was formed or noodged by Yiddishkeit, much as the Chicago of my youth was by the culture of the Irish and the Poles.

Israel has surrendered land, but it hasn’t received any peace

OPINION:

There is a saying that has become popular in recent years: When someone shows you who they are, believe them. The barbarity of Hamas and other Iranian proxies leaves no doubt about their murderous intentions. Islamists consider any Jewish social and political equality an “occupation.” History tells us as much.

On Oct. 7, Hamas and other Gaza-based terrorist groups launched hundreds of rockets and infiltrated the Jewish state. More than 1,400 Israelis were murdered, thousands wounded, and hundreds taken hostage and brought back to Gaza. At one music festival, more than 260 attendees were shot, beaten, and stabbed to death. Women were raped on the corpses of their friends.

Reticence to condemn Hamas amounts to collusion against Israel. Hesitancy to express explicit support for Israel at this time, which also will mean unequivocally backing Israel in the many months ahead of tough fighting to crush Hamas, is tantamount to siding with the enemy.

After the Nazi-era-like rape, mutilation, and pillaging of 1,400 Israeli Jews in one day by Hamas, two weeks ago, this is what Cambridge University had to say: Breathe easy, we’re “always available to provide emotional support.”

Professor Kamal Munir, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for University Community and Engagement of that venerated, celebrated, beacon of integrity and intellectual status – the University of Cambridge! – wrote to “all staff” that “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the recent events in Israel, Gaza and the Middle East.”
