Hebrew media reports significant progress in coalition talks following a meeting held by prime minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu and Shas party leader Aryeh Deri.

The two leaders apparently hope agreements can be filed by tonight, but at the pace of talks thus far, that would seem unlikely.

After being described as “partners” by the Biden administration, the Taliban announced that they’re bringing back sharia punishments by chopping off hands and stoning their victims.

Last year, the Biden administration had praised the Taliban’s “openness” to women’s rights.

This development puts the nail in the coffin of claims by Biden administration figures that the Jihadist organization had changed into a kinder, gentler Taliban. But the media has conveniently ignored revelations of the close collaboration between the administration and the Taliban.

Amid bombshell revelations that the FBI embedded numerous informants in two militia groups accused of plotting to overthrow the government on January 6, FBI Director Christopher Wray finally is facing some heat.

During a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on Tuesday, Representative Clay Higgins (R-La.) angrily demanded to know more details about the use of FBI informants related to the Capitol protest. Higgins twice asked Wray whether FBI informants disguised as Trump supporters were planted inside the building even before protesters gained entry.

Head of the police operations division Sigal Bar Zvi said that the explosive charges were very powerful and of “high quality.” “We are witnessing a series of terror attacks, mostly in Judea and Samaria [the West Bank] and today in Jerusalem. It is clear that there is an intention to harm the public resilience and morale.”   Bar Zvi confirmed that the attacks were masterminded by an organized cell and weren’t spontaneous. The devices, she added, were placed in a bush and behind a wall near the bus station.

Two explosions rocked the entrance to the city of Jerusalem on Wednesday morning near the Central Bus Station at the entrance to Jerusalem and a second at the entrance the neighborhood of Ramot, wounding at least 18 people. Two of the injured were in serious condition.

The causes of the explosions were not immediately determined but Israel Police said that the one near the Central Bus Station appeared to have been caused by a bomb placed in a bag near the bus. The bus was riddled with holes, showing the dispersion of shrapnel. Another explosion went off minutes later near the Ramot Intersection in northern Jerusalem.

T. Belman. Over the years, I posted many articles by Ms Gordon. Then I didn’t hear from her for a long time. Now it appears she is writing for Haaretz. Big surprise.

She admits in this article that she supported Bennett’s government until she didn’t. In her reasons for breaking away she made no mention of the most important one, at least from my eyes, was Gantz’s policies in Area C. Because she is a settler herself, I would have thought that Gantz was a major concern to her as well. Perhaps Haaretz intervened.

First was the deal on a maritime border with Lebanon. Here’s how most rightists saw it: The government capitulated completely to Lebanon, traded tangible assets for empty promises and then, together with its media allies, lied about it.

For instance, this was no “compromise,” as Lapid and the headlines claimed; Lebanon received 100 percent of the maritime territory it initially sought by upping its demands halfway through the negotiations and then retreating to its original demand. Lebanon didn’t “recognize Israel”; both sides signed commitments to Washington, not each other. Israel’s coastal security border (the so-called “buoy line”) received neither Lebanese nor international “recognition”; it was merely acknowledged as the status quo, which can change. Hezbollah has already declared it occupied Lebanese territory.

1. Summary: Jordanian media has recently leaked news about the nomination of a new American Ambassador to Jordan Yael Lempert. A veteran diplomat, Lempert currently serves as the Acting Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs. The Jordanian media has been welcoming Lempert’s nomination with a “song and dance”, as a sign of Jordan’s king trying to over-welcome and perhaps impress the new ambassador. JaFaJ sources confirm this is all a part of the attempt by the king and queen to secure western support for their son to become King as Abdullah is contemplating early retirement to defuse the restless and angry Jordanian people. The Jordanian opposition on the other hand is more sceptical of the new Ambassador and sees her as just an implementor of Biden’s policies which they see as “unconditional support for Abdullah” at the expense of Jordanians. Despite the drama the Jordanian regime is trying to attach to Lempert’s appointment, she is not expected to trigger any major changes as it will remain business as usual at the US Embassy in Amman.

If you have been following the last three weeks of negotiations, you may be under the impression that the formation of Benjamin Netanyahu’s new governing coalition hinges on the exorbitant demands of Religious Zionism co-leader Bezalel Smotrich for the most senior of cabinet posts. Smotrich’s delusions of grandeur are certainly a sticking point, but he is not the main figure in the talks. And neither is Netanyahu.

Eight days have passed of the 28 allotted to Netanyahu to form a government, and Likudniks are already speculating that he may have to ask President Isaac Herzog for a two-week extension on his mandate.

• More Maricopa County voting centers saw tabulator or printer issues than officials had announced, according to a memo by an attorney who observed the election process.
• “It seems very clear that the printer/tabulator failures on election day at 62.61% of the vote centers observed by 11 roving attorneys, and the resulting long lines at a majority of all vote centers, led to substantial voter suppression,” the memo said.
• “It is certainly safe to assume that many voters refused to wait in such lines, left the vote center, and did not return to vote later,” the memo read. “A survey of the electorate could easily confirm such an assumption.”

Although it’s 55 years since I graduated from college, I still fondly remember my student life being enhanced by my membership in a Jewish fraternity. Today, I might have a different attitude, now that Jew-hatred (some call it antisemitism, a somewhat innocuous term.)  A recent article in the Jewish Exponent describes the multiple incidents of harassment of the AEPi fraternity house at Rutgers, the State University of NJ. (Rutgers has one of the largest Jewish populations of American universities.) Like nearly all the similar incidents on college campuses, the perpetrators were pro-Palestinian students or provocateurs.

T. Belman.  Smotrich got Finance. TOI reported Smotrich “to still get say in West Bank policies”

Yesterday, Smoltich relented and pared down his demands “The specific defense responsibilities that Smotrich demanded to be transferred to him were those relating to civil administration in the West Bank, including taking over COGAT (Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories) and responsibility for enforcing the law in the West Bank’s open spaces.” We will see how much of that he got.

Ben Gvir  got Min of Agriculture. He may also have gotten Interior Min which was his primary choice.

Religious Zionism chair reportedly drops demand for Defense Min., will receive Finance Min. instead. Deri to receive 3 ministries.

It appears that a breakthrough has been reached in the coalition negotiation meeting between Prime Minister designate Benjamin Netanyahu and Religious Zionism party chairman MK Bezalel Smotrich Monday.

Under the new compromise, Smotrich would waIve his demands for the defense and religious affairs portfolios and would be appointed Finance Minister in the new government.
