The IDF switches to tear gas from live fire. Why?

By Yaakov Lappin, JPOST

A group of Gazan rioters approached the security fence from the center of the Strip and breached the border with Israel on Monday.

They were then surrounded by IDF units, which fired tear gas and pushed them back into Gaza, an army spokeswoman said. The rioters breached the border repeatedly, before being moved back by the IDF each time into Gaza.

The IDF’s Southern Command is attempting to contain Palestinian riots near the Gaza border fence without the use of live fire, after recent border clashes between Palestinian mobs and the army left nine Gazans dead from gunshot wounds.

A military source said that while there has been no change in the rules of engagement in cases involving the approach of rioters to the fence, commanders have told ground units to focus on deploying tear gas and to fire warning shots in the air to prevent rioters from trying to damage or breach the border barrier.

“If those measures are insufficient, then the soldiers will have to fire at the legs [of rioters],” the source added.

  1. @ Ted Belman:
Don’t you think that secret dealings with the Egyptians and the Saudis have something to do with it.
Once the Saudis and the Egyptians feel strong having obtained more powerful military arms than the Israelis. They will plan to attack Israel. As soon as they have obtained the equipment necessary and they feel powerful they will forget any pacts and find an excuse to attack Israel.
Meanwhile Netanyahu is delusional thinking that his neighbors will abide by any pacts as good peaceful Muslims.
    World opinion favors the winner.
Another aspect to this illusion of a peaceful ME. As Shmuel mentioned above. As long as we provide the savages with food, electricity, water, telecom and emergency medical care they have sufficient strength to complain and attack Israel. Most important of all. Abbas have no intention of negotiating for peace because the international community money is providing him with a very good living. Taking millions out of the money designated for the people.
He is in no hurry to do anything.

  2. I agree with everything SHmuel outlines, except that he is far too kind to Netanyahu. I have a much more dire view of old Bibi. If he had been in the Warsaw Ghetto, he would have been the one urging restraint so that the world did not blame the Jews for the conflict. He would have been harshly condemnatory and extremely punitive towards ghetto residents who treated the Nazis disrespectfully. He would have sought to defuse the conflict by appealing to the better angels of the German psyche. He would have been the same craven, debilitating influence that he is now.

  3. Why are we still asking why?
What does it take for feeble minded Jews to internalize that the unJews WANT to keep the Islamic beasts viable to serve as their proxies to harm Jewish Heritage and murder Jews.
The Oslo renegades established the “peace industry” and also created the “victims of peace” reserve, us.
AGAIN, lets see if it registers.
Netanyahu and his associates DO NOT WANT to defeat the Islamic enemy. They provide the enemy with free electricity, provide them emergency medical care, food and fuel, water and telecom…
Netanyahu disregards the fact that the Jews are victims.
If the purported leaders would have really wanted, all of the terrorists and their supporters would long have been dead or gone.
    Any questions?
