This remeinds me of the attempt to create CENTO v. Southern USSR in the 1950’s.
If my then aolescent memory is correct Pakistan, Turkey Iran and Iraq were in it and the effort to persuade Jordan to join angered Nasser’s Egypt then pro-USSR, which brought out mobs on the streets and Hussein of Jordan dismissed Glubb Pasha his British contract officer commanding the Arab Legion in order to preserve himself. Some Arab leader thought that Jordan was so in UK hands that he congratulated the then British foreign secretary!
