Putin is not in Syria to fight ISIS as demanded by the US and France. He is there to support Assad and defeat his enemies which include anti-Assad forces backed by the US and Saudi Arabia.
What the US should do is aggressively bomb Hezbollah which also supports Assad on behalf of Iran. That would be a message that Russia and Iran would hear loud and clear.
If Hezbollah retaliated by firing rockets at Israel, the US should back an invasion of Lebanon by Israel with the view of destroying Hezbollah. At the same time the US and Saudi Arabia should instruct the Lebanese army to stand down and allow the defeat of Hezbollah.

@ honeybee:

The IDF has warned us about the next Lebanon War
Op-ed: The top brass has been quite clear: The next conflict with our northern neighbor will mean 1,500 missile strikes a day, and no Iron Dome to save Israel’s citizens.

The policy to invade 7 nations in 5 years is behind time slightly.
Sadly, it has strong supporters in the news and blogging community who have long preached very shady international agendas even when they conflict with American policy and Constitutional law

Americans play poker, and think they can out-bluff the world. Russians play chess, know the nuances of opening moves, mid-game, and end-game. And they cannot be bluffed.
They will in fact be the peacemakers and peacekeepers in the Middle East plus much else elsewhere. But it won’t be permanent. The day will come when China will contest with them for the control of southern Asia, both courting India and its growing power base. There is room in this long game for Israel and the Jewish nation. But not for an an Israel and Jewish nation that endlessly seek one or more of America’s shrinking and drying-up teats from which to suck their national milk.
Wise up, forget this democracy crap, and find ways to build a Jewish national power base. Find out what price Russia wants to exact in return for overlooking Israel’s annexation of most of Shomron and Yehuda, along with dumping the PLO and dealing exclusively with the Arab extended clans (hamulas) of the major Arab cities of Jenin, Tulkarem, Nablus, Kalkiliya, Ramallah, Jericho, Hevron, and maybe Gaza as well.

Barack has “brilliantly” destroyed Libya, Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Syria. He’s left the USA an indebted mess, too. Now, he’s to bomb Lebanon?
Well, this is a very good idea Ted.
Too bad you are not the POTUS…
Obama is not going to do that.
And the reason Obama won’t do it is that his Middle Eastern policy consists of empowering Iran, not bombing its surrogates.
From Obama?! This is delusional. The man is functionally Shi’a, himself.
IF?!!! C’mon Ted. Within five minutes hundreds of missiles will be aimed at Israel to overcome all your Iron Dome Defenses. The only way to stop this is a pre-emptive nuke.
You expect this support from the Mullah-in-chief.
That’s right! Arabs always obey orders.
Hezbollah is the only thing protecting Lebanon from ISIS. Even the Christians support Hezbollah now, for that very reason. Lesser of two evils.
If Ted Cruz becomes President, maybe.
Until then, President/Imam Obama is useless.
Your only hope is that Putin gets beat up, which is a real possibility.
Most likely the only way out of this is a nuclear war, hopefully local, by which is meant a pre-emptive Israeli nuclear strike south of the Litani and in the center of Damascus.
If the USA makes it through the next year and four months, and if Cruz is elected, then maybe an Israeli-US rapproachment can occur.
Until then, duck!
@ bernard ross:
I should have said, “If the US wants to pressure Putin to stop attacking the anti-Assad forces, it should bomb Hezbollah”. That would get a reaction but the US won’t do it.
bernard ross Said:
here is how it begins:
Not happening. Furthermore, if anyone should bomb hezbullah it should have been done by Israel before russia came in and before hezzie brings its soldiers home as nassie announce. Hezbullah is Israel s battle and asking the US is futile and will look like Israel seeking the US to fight its wars. Israel should probably have taken the window of opportunity before russia entered.. perhaps there is still a chance, but I expect russia to extend an umbrella to hezbullah and iran under its current MO. I expect hezbullah to get the lebanese gov to rquest russian protection for lebanon from the “terrorists” and russia declaring a no fly zone over lebanon. I expect russia to seek to be the broker and guarantor of a sunni shia peace agreement which will be a disaster for israel. I expect the GCC to go along if they have no other options or support for their proxy war… it may already be happening.
the only aveue I see for Israel is to aid the GCC, if that avenue is still available and hope that the GCC jihadis can drive the russians out of their bases like in 80’s afghanistan. A russian military hegemony is a disaster for Israel… I dont see how putin can resist the obvious vacuum for him to step in and become the new guarantor of stability in the region.
Of course, in such a scenario, Israel will be softer on the pals
Ted, Obama is still President of the USA.
Obama says Putin is weak for going into Syria. He did not digest that Putin is strong enough to back his ally Assad. Obama is not willing to more than sell weapons to Israel and the GCC. He thinks he is winning a world popularity contenst (code for best of poltically correct). He said he is not getting into even a surrogate war with Putin in Syria.
He said all this yesterday in a Press Conference.
So he is not bombing the Hezis. He barely has the stomach to bomb ISIS. His generals past and current for the most part think he is weakening the USA.
What is going to happen to the Russian soldiers and the Iranian soldiers is what happened to the Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan. There will be many dead, and many returning home without limbs.
They now have ISIS and the rebels joining forces. Let’s see how this turns out.
