What Really Caused Lieberman to Move from the Right to the Left?

Everything They Didn’t Tell Us: What Really Caused Lieberman to Move from the Right to the Left?

Books upon books could be written about Lieberman. But let’s focus on the basics. Pay attention to this:

  • For nearly 20 years, Lieberman was serially investigated. Until 2014.
  • For nearly 20 years, Lieberman was closely aligned with Bibi. Until 2014.
  • And then, in 2014, he broke up the Israel Beiteinu–Likud partnership.
  • Just before the government was formed in 2015, he unexpectedly announced that he would not join Netanyahu’s government, which was supported by only 61 [members]. The assumption was that it would not survive, and implicitly — Lieberman’s refusal to join at the time the government was being formed was intended to torpedo its formation.
  • After, contrary to expectations, the government held on for a year and did not fall, contrary to expectations, and after intensive negotiations were simultaneously conducted with the then-chairman of Labor, Isaac Herzog, to bring his party into the coalition — Lieberman suddenly announced that he was joining. In other words, only when it was clear that the government would continue to survive, with or without him, did he prefer that it be with him.
  • And then he unexpectedly brought down the government on 14.11.18 — allegedly on the grounds of security weakness.
  • Except that then, after the elections, when everyone was certain that Lieberman would join the government, once again he was the one who did not join, and he took advantage of the fact that he was the 61st vote, without which Netanyahu would not have had a government.
  • From then on, Israel entered an endless spiral of election campaigns, and the rest is known.
  • Later Lieberman would claim that he did not enter the government because Netanyahu was behind the complaints to the police against him (we will deal with them shortly). However, this ‘argument’ does not explain the fact that already in 2015 he refrained from entering the government, leaving it at the mercy of Oren Hazan.

B. The Israel Beiteinu Affair

Once we point to 2014, the penny drops. At the end of 2014, the Israel Beiteinu affair broke out, in which the names of all the party’s senior figures were implicated.

Except Lieberman.

Were there no pieces of evidence against Lieberman? Quite the opposite:

  • Unlike the affairs that surrounded Lieberman for about twenty years — in this affair the police already had the smoking gun: recordings of Faina Kirshenbaum and Godovsky dealing with what appears to be a huge bribery operation, which they run for ‘the boss’ = Lieberman, who is mentioned by this nickname dozens of times, including around the ‘Ayalim’ case, which was central at the time, in addition to a huge system of arranging salaries for political activists in the party.
  • In ‘Ayalim,’ Faina and her assistant are heard talking about transferring 11,000,000 shekels, of which Faina will take 4 million. What???
    It should be remembered that Faina was not just another senior figure in Israel Beiteinu. She was Ivett’s trusted person, the party’s CEO.
  • Another detail: Faina was never offered the possibility of becoming a state witness against Lieberman. In other words, even if she had wanted to save herself in exchange for Lieberman — there was no one who wanted to hear such a version.
  • And another detail: the person chosen to represent Kirshenbaum was none other than Lieberman’s lawyer, Giora Aderet, whom some claim did not act to defend his client, but rather mainly Lieberman himself.
  • Who protected Ivett? And above all — what was the consideration that Lieberman may have given? Let’s return to the closing of the case against Lieberman in 2012. The person who actually manages the closing of the case is Shai Nitzan, according to attorney Avia Alff. That same Shai Nitzan is appointed State Attorney at the beginning of 2014.
  • When the ‘Israel Beiteinu’ affair breaks out, Shai Nitzan is already sitting at the legal switch. And lo and behold: throughout the entire affair, despite countless physical pieces of evidence, despite the defendants saying in their own voices in the police and in court that ‘the boss’ is a nickname for Lieberman, and despite the police finally having a ‘smoking gun’ against Lieberman — there is nothing and there will be nothing.
  • I do not know whether someone spoke with someone. What I do know is that the new reality that was created — in which Lieberman brings down Netanyahu on the one hand, while he is not investigated on the other — was good both for Lieberman and for Shai Nitzan.

C. 2018

And then, at the end of 2018, one day after the Jerusalem municipal elections in which his associate Moshe Leon was elected, Lieberman suddenly announces that he is bringing down the government. No one understands what is behind the move.

But pay attention to what happens at the end of that same week: a huge investigation by Raviv Drucker into Lieberman’s affairs, millions that passed from place to place in a variety of different events. What is called a ‘knock on the roof.’

It should be remembered that Lieberman’s move to the left was strange twice over. Not only because he himself had been on the deep right for 20 years, but because the electorate of ‘Israel Beiteinu’ has a strong right-wing orientation.

These are the questions we must ask ourselves:

  • Did Lieberman understand that bringing down Netanyahu would bring him peace and quiet in the interrogation rooms?
  • Is this what was behind his attempt to prevent the government from being formed at the critical moment in 2015?
  • Is this the reason why he prevented the formation of a right-wing government in 2019?
  • Is this the reason that Lieberman, who was considered a ‘frequent flyer’ at Lahav 433, stopped seeing the interrogation rooms?

The public will judge.
