Why Christian Zionists Really Support Israel

On May 23, pastors, ministers and priests at more than 1,500 churches in all 50 states and over 50 foreign countries will dedicate their Sunday services to teaching the importance of Christian support for Israel.

On that day — the second annual Christians United for Israel Sunday — church leaders will speak to their congregants about God’s enduring covenant with Abraham and the Jewish people, including God’s promise in Genesis 12:3 that He will bless those who bless Israel. Worshippers will learn about the tragedies of Jewish history. Christian leaders will speak the truth about our culpability and silence during the Holocaust, pogroms and Crusades. The message at churches around the world will be clear and unequivocal: Christians can never again be silent in the face of threats to the Jewish people.

Christians attending these churches will also learn about the miraculous rise of the modern State of Israel and the existential threats it faces today. Many will leave church with a better understanding of the dangers of Iran’s nuclear weapons program, Palestinian terror and the international campaign against Israel’s legitimacy.

As is the case for many Jews, our support for Israel starts with God’s promises in the Hebrew Bible, but it does not end there. Christian Zionists recognize that we owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the Jewish people. As I have stressed to my Christian audiences for years: If you take away the Jewish contribution to Christianity, there would be no Christianity. From the patriarchs to the prophets, from Jesus and his family to the men who wrote down the Bible, Jewish people have provided us with the fundamentals of our faith.

Christian Zionists also recognize that Israel is not the cause of militant Islam’s hatred of America, but an ally in the fight against militant Islam. Until 9/11 and the ensuing events, Israel largely confronted this threat alone. And to this day the frontline of this conflict remains Israel’s backyard. But Christian Zionists understand that Israel is merely militant Islam’s first target. While American and Israeli soldiers do not fight on the same battlefield, they defend the same values.

Given the history of Christian antisemitism, I am not at all surprised that many in the Jewish community are skeptical of Christian support for Israel. Some worry that our efforts are motivated by a desire to convert Jews. Others posit that our Zionism is tied to an effort to speed the second coming of Jesus. Both of these allegations are flat wrong. All we ask of our Jewish friends is that they get to know us before they judge us harshly on the basis of myths such as these.

Like all people of faith, we Christians firmly believe that our religion is true. But we also believe in religious freedom and have enormous respect for the Jewish faith. The first rule adopted by Christians United for Israel was that there would be no proselytizing at our events. CUFI exists only to honor and support the Jewish people, never to convert them.

Regarding the other allegation, the fact is that the vast majority of Christian Zionists and Evangelicals do not believe there is anything we can do to hasten the second coming of Jesus. Our theology is clear that we humans are utterly powerless to change God’s timetable. Yes, like many Jews we do believe that the creation of Israel was the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. And like our Jewish friends we also search the Scriptures to understand what may come next in God’s plans for His creation. But since we are powerless to change these plans, our motives for standing with Israel come from elsewhere. They are the motives discussed above.

Another concern that some individuals have expressed is that Christian Zionists will use our influence to stand in the way of efforts to advance a two-state solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict. Such a claim shows a complete disregard for our record. Like many supporters of Israel, some Christian Zionists have certainly grown skeptical of land-for-peace in the face of the failures of this formula the last few times it was tried. Yet from our founding four years ago, we decided that CUFI would never presume to tell Jerusalem how to conduct its foreign or domestic affairs. We have never, and will never, oppose Israeli efforts to advance peace. Our involvement in the peace process will continue to be restricted to defending Israel’s right to make decisions free of international interference or pressure — including U.S. pressure.

We cannot change the past. But we can try to learn from it. During the Holocaust there were Christians who risked their lives to save Jewish families. Christian Zionists believe that the tradition of the righteous gentile has an important role in the world today. We are not the heroes they were. We do not have to risk our lives as they did. But following their example, we will stand with the Jewish people as they face threats of a second Holocaust from Hitler’s ideological kin in Tehran and elsewhere.

Christian support for Israel starts with the Bible, is strengthened by an understanding of history and endures because of the Judeo-Christian commitment to democratic values. Everything that forms the Christian understanding of the world leads to the same conclusion: Christians should support Israel because it is simply the right thing to do.

    Your presence here debunks the absurd myths about Christians.

    Some people just don’t know who their friends are, and this is especially true among Jews.

    It is beyond my comprehension how any Jew can fixate on Evangelicals when Muslims are determined to eliminate the Jewish people.

    The anti-Christian pathology is so deeply ingrained that it overrides all reason.

    Fortunately, I experience no such neurosis when selecting enemies.

      Ayn, I believe you hit the nail on head.

      The only reason I commented on the “Convert Jews” discussion is this is the only place I heard it being discussed. Growing up in a Catholic School system this was never a subject. Again we had non-Catholic students who attended and there was no effort made to convert them to Catholicism.

      Bottom line Catholic, Jews and Christians all believe in G-d/God. G-d/God is the common denominator.

    • Ayn, maybe you can convince some of the troops here, the bottom line is there should be more concern for those who hate Jews rather then being concerned or find fault with a Christians who frequent the site and support Israel.

      I shouldn’t be discourage, sometimes I get the impression there is this invisible sign here that reads “Jews only” or “Christians and Catholics sit in the rear of the bus”. Then I remind myself this tiny but giant nation needs all the support especially from non-Jews for the world to know Israel is not alone.

    • Ayn, Uncle and all my friends. As you may be aware I don’t like to engage in these religious discussion. I prefer to avoid them since my attendance here is not of a religious interest.

      Having said that you are all aware that I grew up in a community and a close relationship with my Jewish neighbors, some of the finest.

      With respect to converting Jews, in all my years of association it was never considered, mentioned or thought of. To be perfectly frank, my first encounter regarding the subject was here on Israpundit.

      In fact when I attended Catholic school we had several non-Catholics in attendance and there was no attempt to convert them.

      I really got here via Caroline Glick who I believe is not only a great American she is likewise a great Israeli. She is wonderful person and I admire her and her faith in Judaism.

      • Glick for lack of a better term I think is a secular rationalist, who still thinks BB’s morning dodo doesn’t stink.

        I can’t think of a single time where she has referred or mentioned G-d or implied that she had faith. That means that given a certain set of circumstances her political and personal world view will change and has changed.

        Don’t misunderstand most of the religious are no better and many even worse.

        To fathom the depth of the Jewish contradictions, paradoxes and challenges I refer to : Mordechai Kaplan’s approach that had significant influence on the course of Jewish history in the 20th century. But it was facilitated by two objective historical realities:

        The reality of America’s dynamic non-sectarian civil society which after World War II almost compelled inter-ethnic and inter-religious cooperation. This essentially forced the intra-ethnic and intra-religious cooperation of the Jewish people
        The unifying project of developing Israel, which after the Holocaust became of almost transcendent importance to the vast majority of the Jewish people

        These two historical realities– intra-Jewish group cooperation and Israel as a unifying force– are in an advanced stage of erosion in the first decade of the 21st century.

        Israel has become increasingly divided internally (for both religious and political reasons) and this is reflected in growing divisions with the Diaspora (both in regards to feelings about Israel as well as their own internal divisions).

        American society is more divided than at any time since the end of the Jim Crow era. This divisiveness has divided the Jewish intellectual class into neo-cons[ervatives] and traditional liberals. This divisiveness along with evangelical support for the right wing in Israel has contributed to the erosion of traditional liberal Jewish support for Israel (as militant evangelicalism has become a major player in American divisiveness in general).

        As a consequence,( not the only one) Israel is no longer a unifying force for growing numbers of young Diaspora Jews. And given the internal divisions within Israel regarding Haredi entitlements and the settlements it is less and less a unifying force for itself.

        There is also a growing generational differentiation regarding the Holocaust. Within the next 10 years, the last survivor and the last murderer will have died. The Holocaust will increasingly become a symbolic event like the Exodus from Egypt or the Inquisition and expulsion from Spain.

        Its gut wrenching immediacy will fade. Generations will arise “who knew not one survivor.” As with Israel, Holocaust remembrance will not have the unifying power it once had.

        Glick never addresses the width and depth of our problems nor does she offer any ideas to repair them.

  15. Hutchens has a sordid history in Israel. In the mid 1970’s Hutchens, his wife and children deceptively converted to Judaism through the Chicago Rabbinate with the intentions of making aliyah and establishing a congregation to teach Jews that it is possible to believe in Jesus and to remain Jewish. The plot was discovered and their case was taken to the Israeli Supreme Court. Hutchens and his family were kicked out of Israel and their conversions were revoked.

    I am amused.

    This insane plan must have been hatched by Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney.

    America is still a christian country (sort of). We have christian missionaries all the time. Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses are quite persistent. They knock on you door, start evangelizing, and when you realize what they want, you tell them to go away and they go.

    We have christian missionaries on TV. If you don’t want to watch them, you turn the channel.

    For Jewish Israelis to be afraid of christian missionaries is a sad commentary on the state of Judaism in Jewish Israel. What Jew with any understanding of the real meaning of Judaism would give that up to eat jesus’ body and drink his blood?

    Whatever success christian missionaries have among Israeli Jews is due solely to the poor state of Jewish education in Jewish Israel, and the poor state of welfare in Jewish Israel, where “caring” christians can purchase Jewish conversions with payments of money.

    Any “Jew” who abandons Judaism for christianity is no loss to Klal Yisrael.

    Christian missionaries in Jewish Israel are an annoyance, and not a threat. They are similar to the arab women begging in the street, or the schnorrers at the Western Wall who will not leave you alone until you pay them, or the schnorrers collecting money for Jewish “orphans”.

    You don’t outlaw missionaries, you outlaw persistent missionaries who will not leave when you ask them.

      American Jews — numbered at 5,200,000 strong in 2000 — constitute the second largest and the most influential Jewish community in the World. Yet, that figure hardly provides the objective observer with any insight as to the community’s future viability. To glimpse such an insight, one must examine those twin scourges of Jewish life — Love and Hate, more formally known as Assimilation and Antisemitism.

      The United Jewish Communities’ “National Jewish Population Survey 2000” — a decennial demographic study — found that, due to a negative net birthrate (i.e., Jewish deaths exceeded Jewish births for that period), America’s Jewish population had declined by 300,000 souls from 1990 to 2000. This translates to an average net loss of 82 Jews per day for that decade. This is hardly surprising in light of the study’s finding that 70% of Jewish women in the United States between the ages of 25 and 29 were childless.

      The study also discovered that, due to an ongoing intermarriage rate in excess of 50%, of all children under the age of 12 with Jewish parentage in the United States, less than half have two Jewish parents. Of the more than half with a gentile parent, (according to other surveys) only a quarter thereof will be raised as Jews. Of these, only a small minority will marry other Jews, as it will be almost impossible for an intermarried Jew, however sincere, to convince his or her child to do what he or she failed to do, namely: marry a fellow Jew.

      However, Assimilation and a low birth rate are not the only problems facing the American Jewish community. In its June 2002 “Survey Of Antisemitism In America” the Anti-Defamation League found that one third of all Americans believe that Jews have “dual loyalties” (i.e., they are potentially treasonous) and that one fifth of all Americans believe that Jews have “too much power in the U.S. today” (i.e., they are potentially dangerous). Ironically, it was once perversely believed that the multiplicity of ethnic groups inhabiting America — constituting a plethora of inviting targets for the majority population’s hostility — would provide a bulwark against an obsessive hatred of American Jews. Instead, it seems that at least some of these immigrants simply brought their Jew-hatred with them, thereby finding at least some common ground with those Americans who had arrived before them.

      The Message is clear. The American Exile will end, whether by Assimilation or Antisemitism — more likely, by a combination of both.

      When the nation-state of Israel was resurrected in 1948, it was home to a mere 5% of World Jewry. Today, it constitutes the largest Jewish community in the World, and is home to 40% of World Jewry. And Israel’s Jewish community is the only one in the World with a positive net birthrate.

      Due to ongoing terrorism and the enduring hostility of much of the World, Israel may not seem safe for the individual Jew. Yet, it is the only country in the World that is safe for the collective Jew.

      Again, the Message is clear. If the Jewish people are to have a Future, it will only be found in Israel. American Jews can either be a part of that Future, or they can simply disappear.

        you forgot that 99% perform Mitzwat HaMangal on Yom Ha’Atzmaut which is a holier holiday than Pessah according to the Gemara.

    We are talking about their action. The actions you choose to ignore. The insidious actions that are hidden and camouflaged. When you ignore what they say to each other in closed forums… reminds me of the Palis saying one thing to their own in Arabic and another to the Jews and the West in English.

    Your Christians support Israel,but they war against Judaism. The ultimate target is to get as many Christians posing as Jews in through the front door as well as the back and side doors. Most of the Ukrainian and Ethiopian immigrants they supported to come here are either Christians claiming some Jewish lineage (Most unsupported or falsified). They either arrive as believing Christians or are fast tracked and targeted by Christians here and abroad and through Russian and Amharic languages Christian sat broadcasts to bring them to Christianity. Yhey receive much financial support from Christian Charities, and missioning one on one. Once converted they become new missionaries for one on on to each other in their ethnic groups many are nominal Jews and to the established Jews already here.

    Here their interests meet up with our radical leftists who support bringing in these non Jews to balance the growing demographic threat of the traditional and religious denominations here. For our radical left less Jewish is better.

    They silence and gain political support here like lobbyists in America they spend millions in bribes for our silence and support and Jewish peanut galleries Like yourself.

    Here in Dimona we have 2-3k Black Americans all coming and staying illegally and we couldn’t evict them because of fear of American and Black backlash against Israel and American Jews so we are stuck with them and some even were born here and grew up here.
    This is how they expect to replace the Jews here in Israel where every non Jewish Christian tries to convert Jews. In ten-20 years you can find maybe 60% of the country could be Christian and Muslim or non Jewish.

    They don’t even try to hide their goals and modus operandi, If you look you will find them even bragging to ea. other how successful they’ve been and all think with much truth that we are the dumbest animals on the planet.

    Hitler was stupid. He didn’t have to waste all his resources killing the Jews; just tell them how much he loved them, give them a few kind words and baubles and in a generation or two or three the Jews would have disappeared as Jews. Yea I know, with Hitler it was also about racial purity!

If you’re so against their missionizing activities (which get 400%-600% more funding than what all of these Evangelicals contribute to Israeli and Jewish causes – why do you think that is?), then you should stand up front and tell them that even without a law, they should cease all of their massive funding of messyanic christian congregations and Jews for jesus – at the least in Israel, call off their dogs, like Caleb Myers’ and his “Jerusalem Institute of Justice” (spit) and Jay Sekulow and his “American Center for Law & Justice” (spit) – all well funded organizations aimed at pressuring full freedom for christians to stalk our fellow Jews in Israel. And if they don’t, you don’t want their love. Go ahead, Ted, see what “true” friends they’ll turn out to be.

    To place your position in some perspective I offer: America vetoes non binding and unenforcible UN resolutions against Israel and donates some millions to make the Jews happy but at the same time support politically and military most of Israels enemies who would destroy us if they could. How difficult is it today even for Jews to view America other than a friend an ally? How difficult is it for most Jews to believe FDR was complicit in the murder of millions of Jews.. etc. You are willingly being taken in and deceived with the Galuti notion that Israel must have powerful friends to survive. History has shown all our friends and allies at some point turned on us and they became our worst tragic nightmares.

    Pass some tough anti missionary Laws here and strictly enforce them and you will see the true nature of your falsch friends. Can’t pass such Laws due to politics, threaten to pass them and watch, listen to and watch the feedback.

    Their money is is also corrupting our very corruptible politicians and stupid rabbis. You can play the 3 monkeys game at your own and our peril

    I met Hagee about 5 years ago and heard him speeck. I have followed him since and toatally accept his motivations and explanations herein set out. He does not say that his church will not proseletize Jews. Afterall that’s what their religion demands of them. What he soes say is highlighted.

    I can live with that distinction. Afterall even if they weren’t supporting us, they would be trying to convert us. Some argue that the support is a trojan horse making their efforts at missionizing more productive. Maybe yes, maybe no. I can still live with it. Their support is worth the potential risk.

    You guys that attack them and reject their support are cutting off your noses to spite your faces. You are trying to score debating points. Bottom line is we need their support.

    As a Christian minister dedicated to encouraging the Jewish people around the world to cherish their Jewish roots and not convert to the churches, I feel compelled to enter the debate over the Evangelical Christian Zionists. Evangelical Zionists deliver massive political clout for Israel in Washington and millions of dollars for Israeli causes. Why?

    Its argued they give non-theological reasons for their ardent support of Israel. Does anyone really think they would openly admit their primary reason—their belief that Jesus returns to a Christian Israel? Some Jewish leaders insist Evangelicals are only seeking God’s promise of a blessing to those that bless the descendants of Abraham.

    As a Christian I appreciate this blessing, but I find it impossible to believe that Christians are donating millions of dollars to Jewish causes simply to attain a degree of blessing unattainable within their own Christian religion. Can Jewish leaders be this naïve?

    To the Evangelical Zionists the prophetic rebirth of the Israeli State was the most dynamic event in the church’s history—a sure sign that Jesus will return in their lifetime. Effervescing with excitement, they will do anything to keep this prophetic sign alive.

Overall, as a Christian who believes the God of Israel joined us in our human race for 33 years in the Name of Yeshua, I still believe that the Torah, the first five books of the Bible define Israel’s borders, as established by the Creator of Life on Earth. The Land of Israel belongs to Israel, not because Zionists or Christian Zionists believe it, but because that God’s Words. It is true that some Zionists have the wrong motives in seeing the Third Temple built or not built, but I am a firm believer that the Old Covenants do not diminish the New Covenant, nor does the new Covenant cancel out the old covenant – they are side by side – equally important. They work together. The GOD OS ISRAEL who appeared to Abraham is the exclusive God and the only God, it’s just that Christians believe that the God of Abraham became a human being in the Name of Jesus. Jesus does not replace the God of Israel because Jesus was and is to come as The God of Israel, Creator and Messiah of all. I am a firm believer that ZION is God’s Idea. The LAND OF ISRAEL does not belong to the UN or the world – it belongs to Israel.

    That covenant is everlasting and no theological opinion can erase this fact.
