NEW YORK – Now that the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) has made clear that it does not regard Hamas as a terrorist entity and does not want it disarmed, it is time for the UN to expel the PLO and its affiliates, says Americans for a Safe Israel (AFSI), a leading pro-Israel organization.
The PLO’s Secretary General Azzam al-Ahmed told the Cairo-based Shorouk News on February 23 that “All talk of disarming Hamas and their being a terrorist organization is unacceptable to us,” and that Hamas is part of the Palestinian cause. He also said Hamas will be allowed to take part in elections under the Palestinian Authority.
“It’s important to understand that the PLO, Fatah, the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the nonexistent ‘State of Palestine’ are basically all the same entity,” stated Moshe Phillips, Chairman of Americans for a Safe Israel (AFSI). “The PLO / Palestinian Authority is considered by far too many nations to be a legitimate polity that wants to negotiate and this falsehood has now been exposed. The PLO sets policy and the PA follows it; this same leadership that rejects the disarmament of Hamas also completely controls the PA.”
AFSI says that the UN, through its recognition and legitimizing of the ‘State of Palestine’ and the PLO, is complicit in support for Hamas to remain armed. The UN must now revoke all statuses that the ‘State of Palestine’ and the PLO have within its organizations. Now that the PLO leadership is publicly and officially supporting Hamas, how can the UN allow them to maintain their charade that they are not terrorists? A UN that does not expel both the PLO and the ‘State of Palestine’ is complicit in saying Hamas should stay armed and sends the message that terrorism is legitimate.
“The governments of France, Britain, Australia, Canada, and Portugal formally recognized the ‘State of Palestine’ in September 2025 and as a result we have not seen a more moderate PLO/Fatah but one that is now choosing to publicly stand united with Hamas,” stated AFSI’s Moshe Phillips. “Mahmoud Abbas is the leader of the PLO, Fatah, the Palestinian Authority, and the nonexistent ‘State of Palestine’, and there is now no disputing that he and his henchmen clearly endorse the murder and kidnapping of Israeli civilians that Hamas committed on October 7.”
