The Wall Street Journal and CBS News on Friday reported that Pres. Trump has ordered the US military to prepare for a fresh attack on Iran which could begin as as soon as this weekend. The primary objective of this military campaign is stated to force Tehran to surrender and agree to US terms in ongoing ceasefire negotiations. While ignoring the fact that forcing Iran to surrender is defeated by allowing them the offramp of agreeing to return to ceasefire negotiations, Trump has issued the order to prepare, sources indicate he has not yet given the final execution order to initiate the offensive. The operation is expected to last several days, with discussions held about concluding before global financial markets open on Monday to mitigate economic fallout.
The planned bombardment is intended to represent a significant escalation in the ongoing war, focusing on key Iranian energy infrastructure, including oil refineries and electric power plants. What is missing in this plan to bring Iran to its knees is mention of the US targeting sources of power for the regime such as IRGC strongholds and a return to targeted execution strikes against IRGC and Iranian political leadership as was the strategy being pursued before Trump’s revolving ceasefire and limited strikes policy took affect four months ago.
This report of a shift in US policy provides for a potential return to active combat operations including Israel, which has seen no direct action between Israel and Iran since direct strikes were paused under Trump’s previously brokered ceasefire in April. US and Israeli officials are actively coordinating plans at current, this coming in the hours following recent meetings between President Trump and Israeli PM Netanyahu. The proposed targets are described as some of the most severe to date, with high-level talks also exploring the possibility of severing power to Tehran entirely. However, some White House political aides continue to express firm opposition to the plan during cabinet meetings.
The decision to escalate follows a breakdown in diplomatic trust and recent hostilities, including an Iranian attack on a US base in Jordan and reported strikes on vessels in Egypt. During a cabinet meeting at Camp David, Pres. Trump stated he is “losing faith” in Iranian negotiations, asserting that the US must “win” and ensuring Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reinforced this stance, stating Iran will “continue to pay” until it engages in meaningful talks. Simultaneously, Iran’s leadership has vowed retaliation against both US and Israeli infrastructure if the strikes proceed, further raising tensions in the Persian Gulf region.
Notably, CNN has reported in recent hours that that there is no indication that Israel will take part in this actual implementation of the current strikes, so we will see how thing mature.
