Donetsk leaflet: Jews must register or face deportation

Fear replaced communal atmosphere in Donetsk’s Jewish community as armed men handed out a leaflet Passover eve calling on Jews register their religion and property with the interim pro-Russian government or face deportation and loss of citizenship.

A leaflet distributed in Donetsk, Ukraine calling for all Jews over 16 years old to register as Jews marred the Jewish community’s Passover festivities Monday (Passover eve), replacing them with feelings of concern.

The leaflet demanded the city’s Jews supply a detailed list of all the property they own, or else have their citizenship revoked, face deportation and see their assets confiscated.

Donetsk, a Ukraine province with 4.3 million people – 10 percent of Ukraine’s population – and 17,000 Jews, is home to much of the country’s heavy industry, and is thus the biggest prize of the eastern regions where pro-Russian separatists have captured government buildings in the past week.

The leaflet, signed by Chairman of Donetsk’s temporary government Denis Pushilin, was distrIbuted to Jews near the Donetsk synagogue and later in other areas of the city where pro-Russians activists have declared Donetsk as an independent “people’s republic”, defying an ultimatum from Kiev to surrender.

The leaflet was written in Russian and had Russia’s national symbol on it, as well as the Donetsk People’s Republic insignia.

“Dear Ukraine citizens of Jewish nationality,” the flyer began, “due to the fact that the leaders of the Jewish community of Ukraine supported Bendery Junta,” a reference to Stepan Bandera, the leader of the Ukrainian nationalist movement which fought for Ukrainian independence at the end of World War II, “and oppose the pro-Slavic People’s Republic of Donetsk, (the interim government) has decided that all citizens of Jewish descent, over 16 years of age and residing within the republic’s territory are required to report to the Commissioner for Nationalities in the Donetsk Regional Administration building and register.”

The leaflet detailed what type of documents the Jewish citizens would need to supply: “ID and passport are required to register your Jewish religion, religious documents of family members, as well as documents establishing the rights to all real estate property that belongs to you, including vehicles.”

If the message was not made clear enough, the leaflet further stipulated the consequences that would come to those who failed to abide by the new demands: “Evasion of registration will result in citizenship revoke and you will be forced outside the country with a confiscation of property.”

To add insult to injury, the leaflet demanded the Jews pay a registration fee of $50.

  1. First, no one knows who really issued this pamphlet. The extreme right Ukrainian Nazis, who collaborated with the Nazis during the Holocaust? Pro-Russian groups, as a means of financial extortion (for that matter even the “pro-Western” western Ukraine could have done this for money); a group (which side who knows??) acting as agent provocateurs to “force” the West to do something — meaning intervene in Ukraine against the Russians – the “save the Jews.” THE REAL STORY, THE REAL HYPOCRISY is Mr. Kerry, who utters pious words—“this is not just intolerable — it’s grotesque.” As history shows us, words really scare dictators. What is “intolerable” and “grotesque” is Kerry and Obama’s constant pressure on Israel to release Palestinian terrorists, and now ISRAELI ARAB terrorists, make further concessions, divide Jerusalem, cede disputed territory to provide a new missile launching areas for terrorist attacks on what would remain of Israel, with the knowledge that it would men the demise of the Jewish state. THAT IS GROTESQUE. The Islamic supremacists are the real “Nazis” of the Muslim world, who in their sacred texts, in the PLO National Charter, in the Hamas “Covenant” call for the elimination of ALL the Jews in Israel, all of which is what they want.
Please explain this to others, and feel free to forward my explanation.

That’s my take on this as well. The leaflet sounds like the sort of dumb stunt that would be attempted by the gang of real Nazi-oriented latter-day Banderists who pulled off the coup in Kiev that got rid of the legally-elected Russian-oriented president of Ukraine.

And they have a solid reason to feel desperate. Significant numbers of Ukrainian-speaking soldiers in their army have joined with the Russian-speakers on the side of the Moscow government.

One of the attributes of the obvious power of Vladimir Putin is that he is too experienced and intelligent to attempt to start an anti-Jewish pogrom at the same time his government has been working on behalf of improved relations with the State of Israel.

  3. Ted: the automatic scrolling where text goes out of the text box to the right and left is difficult because you cant check your typing for errors without hassle. I would either have a horizontal scroll button or, better still, have all horizontal text contained within the box. Moving the margins out horizontally would probably help on both counts.
Also definitely one should start with a much bigger text box before adjusting its size. The current size is untenable.

false flag or not this is 1938 all over again

I have said a long time the jews should get out of europe and that Europe is still a n existential enemy of the Jews as they and their supersessionist churches are the greatest supporter of BDS and terrorist arab orgs. My purpose is not to spend a lot of time repeating my hopes, dreams and positions which in summary is: 100% pro Israel, pro Jew, pro zionist and pro transfer of the arabs. However, I distinguish between my hopes and dreams and my evaluation of what is really happening and what is likely to happen which is my main purpose on Israepundit.
Proper information to diaspora jews should be coming from diaspora orgs who should cooperate with Israel intelligence in such evaluations. based on my observations, I do not agree with the narratives that Jews need to choose sides. The same thing happened in the arab spring and I said then it would be good for the arabs to be killing each other instead of the Jews. I feel the same now, the europeans are a covert enemy and russia is also dangerous. However, politically the annexation of Crimea has good precedent for the annexation of C or the west bank. I do not subscribe to any arguments involving ideology, democracy etc because its all BS. If Obama and the euros are tied up and embroiled in a mess with the russian then that will probably be good for Israel as was the arab spring. the west will have serious problems to deal with and their relations with Israel would take a more pragmatic turn separate from the Israel pal issues. relations with russia are very tricky and Israel would know how to proceed in this, stepping between land mines. I would expect that Israel will seek to make some accommodations with Russia, perhaps in the gas, in return for limited Russian arms supply to Iran. I dont believe that Russia would defend Iran but would prefer it remained isolated so russia can remain its big patron and have more control of energy to Europe, which I believe to be his major strategy.
RE Syria: I suspect that Russia will be satisfied with fragmenting Syria in return for maintaining its interest and other perks. One of those perks may have been Crimea.

It is interesting that Yalta Conference took place in Crimea where Stalin and the west “reorganized” Europe along their separate interests with give and take. for all we know the same may be going on again in Europe and the ME.
the Jews and Israel must be pragmatic, there is no ideology, or “good guys”, in this. Hopefully, the pal drama will become an off broadway play with Europe and Asia taking center stage.

Bernard, false flag or not this is 1938 all over again. This is out of the Third Reich. We should be aware for now and meanwhile get ready for the future.

That is the right assessment. No matter who done it, it was done.

Frankly, both sides have histories in this area.

  7. @ Ted Belman:
thanks. the big box icon does not allow the back and forth of blockquoting from the article as it creates a new page which covers up the article.
The dragging corner only allows a drag down but not bigger width. as you have huge margins to the right and left of the article why not narrow those margins to almost zero? Also in typing in that drag box my right margin has disappeared and the text appears to automatically scroll out of the screen(left and right) It is difficult to see the text which goes out of the screen while typing and there is no scroll button. therefore, you cannot see parts of your comment as you type that have gone out of the 2 margins. Test it yourself.

  8. @ bernard ross:Thanks. Still working on it.

Look at bottom right corner of box. Drag what you see in corner to right size.

Also click on two icons just above the box. one is a spell check and the other gives a big box.

  9. TED: 2 suggestions your comment boxes are too small for typing comfortably and on the main page the headline lettering should be white instead of black, on the blue background just like on this page. easier to read.

  10. Its an obvious false flag created by the kiev nationalists. Putin controls the separatists and he is too smart to allow that. this has already been disavowed by the separatists. the use of the Jews in this way by the Kiev nationalists demonstrates their anti semitism, as if any further demonstration beyond their history was necessary. Euros in strife with each other is as good as the arabs in strife with each other.

  12. And so it goes. It never really ended. This is merely a continuation or resumption.

Russian, Ukrainian, they are all the same. Bloodthirsty anti Semites. They never change.

    It will only get worse.

The Jews should leave those hateful lands and let the inhabitants continuously massacre each other rather than temporarily readjusting their focus on the Jews.

  13. There is a debate if this is really a pro-Russian group, or the Ukrainian government putting out black propaganda to make the Russians look bad. Some people claim there are translation errors.

In any event, the Jews should leave … tomorrow.

  14. Jews should leave the Ukraine now. Leave Russia.

Apparently, it does not matter whether Russians or Ukrainians are in charge.
