Dr. Martin Sherman, head of the Israeli Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), discusses UK’s decision to sanction Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria as well as the steps taken by Israel in response to them.
Dr. Sherman detailed the retaliatory measures announced by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar in response to UK sanctions, which include shutting down the British consulate in Jerusalem, expelling British personnel from the Gaza coordination center in Kiryat Gat, halting British training of further Palestinian Authority security forces, and denying entry into Israel and the PA territory for 12 British officials, including Jeremy Corbyn.
He went on to dismiss the UK’s sanctions as mere “virtue signaling,” noting they impact only about 1% of bilateral trade and are mirrored by similar limited measures from other European nations. Sherman also criticized Israel’s long-standing diplomatic shortcomings, arguing that the country has failed to effectively promote its narrative internationally, while allowing the “Palestinian” narrative to dominate global discourse. He further distinguished between unauthorized settlement activities by groups like “Hilltop Youth” and Palestinian terrorism, highlighting the fact that the two are not remotely comparable due to the vast disparity in their levels of violence. Dr. Sherman concludes by emphasizing Israel’s robust arms export sector, which reached nearly $20 billion in 2023, and warned that a total ban on UK defense trade holds the potential of significantly degrading UK military capabilities and damaging its intelligence-sharing ties with Israel.

Grumbling about British actions over Israel is time wasting as once something is said that is it,
Now we need to question British reps and government repeatedlly on how they intend to persuade and sanction Arabs to accept a two state peace because the Arabs have since the1937 Peel Report rejected a dozen** times any form of two state solution as Arabs find the very idea of a Jewish sovereignty to be so many outrageous “uppity niggers”.
**Peel 1937, Woodhead 1938, 1945-46 Montgomery and Anglo American reports, UN 181 -1947, the two decades of the 1949 armistices, Israeli 1967 offer to return to the Green Line for a peace treaty, Sadat’s autonomy 1977 within the Egyptian peace, Madrid and Oslo sabotaged by Hamas bus bombs; Camp David Clinton Barak offer, Wye memo, Olmert’s offer…..
