Never has there been another finance minister in Israel with so much authority and so many means to succeed. Even Netanyahu, who was appointed to the post in 2003, did not have all the power that Kahlon now has.

Kahlon will be the first finance minister to head the Israel Land Authority, which will be transferred to him from the Housing Ministry, and the Planning Administration, which will be transferred from the Interior Ministry. He will also head the Housing Cabinet. The Kulanu Party will also receive two additional ministries: the Ministry of Housing, which will go to Maj. Gen. (Res.) Yoav Galant, and the Ministry of the Environment. His party will also chair the Knesset’s Welfare Committee and receive a 7 billion Israeli shekel (about $1.8 billion) budget to combat poverty.

Furthermore, Kahlon asked for and received the right to veto any Basic Laws and infringe on the powers of the Supreme Court, and to veto the Nationality Law, which Netanyahu promoted during his last term.

  1. The choice is Kahlon or Herzog? That is the realistic choice Likud has in forming a government. It is not necessarily a choice of two good choices but which would be less damaging to Israel and the view the Likud has of how to run the country.

We can say Bibi is not doing this or he has agreed to that. It can be madding at times what compromises one has to make in Israeli politics and multiple party coalitions.

  2. Furthermore, Kahlon asked for and received the right to veto any Basic Laws and infringe on the powers of the Supreme Court, and to veto the Nationality Law, which Netanyahu promoted during his last term.

obviously these are not important to BB and are not part of his prime agenda, which he keeps under his control. He uses these issues to reward those who tow his line whereas Bennett is an obstruction to BB YS agenda which is much more left than people realize. Bennett talking annexation is now neutered.

  3. reminds me of BB appointing Livni to Justice so that the implementation of a left wing agenda in YS would continue without BB getting blamed. Now Kahlon will guarantee BB that there will be no change in continuing the obstruction of Jewish settlement in YS. A BB policy that folks dont notice.
