In his 1989 book From Beirut to Jerusalem, columnist Thomas Friedman of The New York Times, wrote, “Israel is becoming Yad Vashem with an Air Force.” That line represents the kind of smart-alecky analysis that helped build Friedman’s brand as a faux foreign-policy wise guy that still sustains him in his perch on the Times’ op-ed page, even though his columns have been stale and devoid of any real insight for years. But his quip at the expense of the Jewish state – and the link between its determination to survive and the memory of the Holocaust – has not been forgotten. That’s because it represents the impatience of many in the chattering classes with Israel’s embrace of its role as the ultimate guarantor of the safety of the Jewish people.

In the more than 30 years since Friedman’s book became a best-seller, more lip service than ever is paid to the memory of the Shoah, while some of the same people who beat their breasts about the Six Million fail to speak out against the lie that Israel behaves like the Nazis. Yet in spite of that anti-Semitic smear, the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz is an apt moment to remind us why the memory of what did and didn’t happen there is still central to the rationale for modern Zionism.

Defense Minister Naftali Bennett said Tuesday that Israel would apply sovereignty over the West Bank and the Jordan Valley in response to remarks made by Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh that the PA would act to have the distinction between Area A, B and C in the Palestinian territories annulled.

While touring the Binyamin Regional Council in the West Bank, Bennett visited construction sites of new housing units as well as in the Yeshiva High School in the settlement of Beit El.

“This morning the Palestinian prime minister declared a campaign to seize Area C,” Bennet said during the tour.

Some 10,000 police officers will be deployed throughout Jerusalem and the highways leading to it later this week, as 47 delegations of kings, presidents, and other world leaders visit Israel to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, police said Sunday.

According to the head of police operations, Commander Yishai Shalem, the coming week’s 5th World Holocaust Forum at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and museum is expected to be one of the largest and most complex security operations ever for the Israel Police.

I have mentioned a number of times that the backbone of Trump’s “coalition of the willing” is the growing angloshere alliance.  The mainstay in this coalition is the US and the British Commonwelth just as it was in WWII.  They will include India and other nationalist countries, I have predicted that after Brexit, the UK’s relationship to Israel will be more like America’s relationship with Israel.

Israel and the United Kingdom are building a “new strategic relationship” driven by soaring bilateral trade and deepening ties in various sectors, according to a new report.

The increasing strength of the relationship, the report by the Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre (BICOM) states, is symbolized by soaring bilateral trade between the countries. Trade increased by 72% from $6.1 billion in 2012 to $10.5b. in 2018, and the UK now represents Israel’s third largest export market, surpassed only by the United States and China.

Wrapped up against the bitter cold, some bearing their few remaining possessions on their shoulders, men, women and children queue up in neat rows of five and wait… to find out whether they are going to live or die.

Herded like cattle: Newly arrived Jewish inmates are forced by SS officers into two queues — one destined for the gas chambers

Behind them, mothers and their children — each wearing a yellow star to denote their religious status — continue to pour out of the train, often leaving their suitcases behind them, as they are herded into lines.

Those immediately selected for death will be guided towards the gas chambers. The rest are deemed suitable for work and will have their heads shaved before being marched off to the labour camp where they will endure the harshest conditions.

Taken in 1944 by a German photographer billeted to Auschwitz-Birkenau in southern Poland, these extraordinary images are the only known record of scores of Jewish families who arrived at the Nazis’ most notorious extermination camp where 1.1 million people died or were killed between 1940 and 1945.

T. Belman, If you disagree with everything that Freilich wrote here you won’t be too far wrong. A week ago I attended his lecture in which he introduced a book he just wrote and published. That was my first encounter with his opinions and I took great issue with him.

In this case, Israel has always claimed that she will fight her own battles. She just wants diplomatic and military support.. In 2012 Bibi was ready to bomb Iran as she hid  and Obama stopped him. Obama wanted to strengthen Iran and weaken israel.  Trump the opposite.

To this end, he correctly disowned the JCPOA and has authorized Irael to fight back against Iranian infiltration in Syria. He has strengthened Israel by acknowledging the Golan as hers, Jerusalem the undivided capital of Israel, that the settlements are not illegal, that Israel should keep the jordan Valley..

Jeez, how much more do we want Trump to do for us. Yes, Trump wants to get out of the M.E. but he also wants to leave a strong Israel in his place.

The beginning of the final and critical year of President Donald Trump’s first term, during which we will find out whether he is reelected to a second, is a fitting time to assess his achievements in the Middle East to date.

As is appropriate, however, to the general Trumpian approach of governance by chaos, it is difficult to assess his record in terms of coherent policy. Instead of well-founded strategy, what we have is a series of isolated acts, some successful, others not, often largely a matter of impulse.

Iran‘s nuclear program and regional expansionism have been the primary issues that have concerned Trump in the Middle East.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif says government working ‘closely’ with George Soros’ Open Society Foundations.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif said Sunday that the Iranian government has worked closely with billionaire George Soros’ Open Society Foundations (OSF) organization.

Zarif made the remarks in response to questions raised in the Iranian parliament. According to Zarif, the activity began before he entered his current position, and he boasted that he had succeeded in “keeping the activity organized.”

OSF has funded a number of far-left organizations in Israel which seek to change the policy of Israel’s government.

American and Israeli officials say Trump to decide this week whether or not to release ‘Deal of the Century’ plan before Israel’s election.

President Donald Trump will decide this week whether his administration will release the much-awaited Middle East peace plan before Israel’s March 2nd Knesset election, or whether the administration will wait until after Israel’s third election in less than a year, Channel 13 reported Sunday night.

According to both Israeli and American officials, the president has yet to discuss the issue with his team handling the Mideast peace plan – which has been dubbed the “Deal of the Century”, adding that a number of factors this week will determine the timing of the plan’s release.

The Trump administration has already held off on releasing the plan for over a year, delayed by two Israeli general elections in 2019.

The recently discovered images come from the estate of a deputy commandant at the camp, Johann Niemann, one of ten SS-men killed by prisoners in the famous October 1943 uprising. Parts of his collection will be made public on Jan. 28, at the Topography of Terror archive in Berlin, and in a new book to be released that day.

It reportedly is the first time that Demjanuk has been identified in photos of Sobibor.

Demjanuk, whose U.S. citizenship was revoked in 2002 for lying on his citizenship application about his Nazi service, and who was deported to Germany in 2009, was convicted in Munich in 2011 as an accessory to the murder of 28,060 Jews at the death camp. Sentenced to five years in prison, he died in a nursing home at the age of 91 in March 2012, while awaiting a decision on his appeal.

Steps are being taken to force primary elections for the Bayit Yehudi leadership due to anger among significant portions of the party membership and central committee toward current leader Education Minister Rafi Peretz.

A meeting has been called by Bayit Yehudi MK Moti Yogev and former MK and deputy defense minister Eli Ben-Dahan for party members to discuss ways to “renew and rehabilitate” Bayit Yehudi.

Beyond that, efforts are being made to gather the signatures of 25% of the Bayit Yehudi central committee, numbering about 1,000 members, needed to convene a central committee emergency meeting. Read more…

Italian opposition leader vows to recognize Jerusalem as capital if elected

The Italian opposition leader lamented: “We have an EU that denies its Judeo-Christian roots and labels Israeli products, a UN that in 2018 condemned Israel with 18 resolutions.”

Italian opposition leader Matteo Salvini held an event on combating antisemitism at the Senate in Rome on Thursday, two months after opposing the formation of a parliamentary committee to fight hatred of Jews and others.

“The antisemitism of a certain traditional part of the Right and a certain part of the Left is our enemy,” Salvini said. “We are duty bound to combat those who say the Jews are the Nazis of today. There are those who think that within [the] Islamic world but also within certain parts of Europe.”

 Salvini called on Italy to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. He also said he plans to propose the criminalization of antisemitic hate speech, Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs President Dore Gold recounted. Read more…
