The Real Message From Biden and Sunak to Israel: Get Moving

Israel got a warning from London yesterday, but it’s not the one that’s been widely reported.

Benny Gantz, who presents himself as Israel’s opposition leader and is, for now, a member of the triumvirate unity war council governing the country under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has been traveling to Western capitals to burnish his credentials for his inevitable rematch against Netanyahu. As of now, Gantz’s party is far ahead of Bibi’s in the polls, but Gantz understands that Israelis need to be able to picture him in the big chair.

US President Joe Biden is expected to announced in his State of the Union Address on Thursday night that he will order American forces to coordinate with the Israel Defense Forces in an “emergency mission” to build a “temporary seaport” for Gaza.

The temporary port is intended to open a maritime route for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza from Cyprus, an option that has been discussed for several months. There is no indication that the US will use the port to allow the Gazans to escape from Gaza, and it appears that for now, the US plans to continue leaving the Gazans trapped there, as Egypt has been doing along its shared border at Rafah.

Two steps to heaven

By Josh First, AMERICAN THINKER                             6 March 2024

Much talk going on now about how President Trump is supposed to get a stranglehold on the lawless and insubordinate federal bureaucracy if he is elected to a second term this November.  As a former seven-year federal policy bureaucrat who fled the belly-of-the-beast U.S. EPA in 1998, here are my suggestions.  These are based especially on my witnessing the changing of the Senior Executive Service (SES) guard from the Bush I administration to the Clinton administration, and all of the cascading management changes that followed.

The Ukrainian Verdun

By Victor Davis Hanson, AMERICAN GREATNESS  7 Mar 2024

Ukraine has ossified into something like the modern version of the horrific Battle of Verdun, fought 108 years ago on the 1916 Western Front of World War I. That meat grinder cost France and Germany some 700,000 dead and wounded.

The nightmare ended ten months later, after the heroic French defense stopped the final German push. But the respective armies ended up in the same position as when the battle started.

Profile of a Political Agitator

Ehud Barak is endangering Israel’s unity and stability.

by

Ehud Barak, noteworthy Israeli army general with a highly decorated military career, acquired public notoriety last year for his role in masterminding, organizing, and financing, the sweeping protest campaign against judicial reform in Israel.  Throughout 2023, prior to the slaughter of October 7, he and his like-minded political allies sowed chaos in the streets, intimidated citizens, mobilized strikes, incited army reservists, and brought Israel to the precipice of civil war. They engaged in a so-called non-violent struggle for democracy, speaking on behalf of entrenched elites in Israeli society, while charging that the elected government of Binyamin Netanyahu was illegitimate. Now, with the Gaza war still unfolding, the protesters are back in the streets.

A Potential Palestinian State: Will It Be an Ally or Enemy of the United States?

Yoram Ettinger | EMET | March 6, 2024

After the worst massacre of Jews on a single day since the Holocaust, many members of the international community have arrived at a single-factor conclusion of how to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, combined with grandiose plans of how to finally bring peace to the Middle East: the rewarding of this violence with the creation of a contiguous Palestinian state, stretching from Judea and Samaria, (the West Bank) through Gaza. The “dusting off” of this solution, which has been tried, stretches back to the 1937 Peel Commission, the 1947 UN Partition Plan, the 1967 Khartoum Conference, the Oslo Accords of 1993, the Roadmap for Peace in 2002, and the Gaza Withdrawal of 2005.

Are Israelis Taking a Page from King Herod’s Book?

Peloni: Highly recommended video. An intriguing discussion of Israel’s efforts to survive the current intrigues and interests of the latest empire trying to master the Levant.

Gadi Taub, Mike Doran & Tony Badran | TABLET | March 5, 2024

King Herod was a master at using the Roman Empire in order to outmaneuver domestic opposition. But the Romans were no less shrewd at using him. The result was, eventually, the demise of Jewish independence in the land of Israel. Is the Israeli opposition attempting the same kind of move by inviting American intervention in domestic politics? Mike, Gadi and Tablet Magazine’s News Editor Tony Badran discuss Gantz’s visit to Washington in light of Tony’s brilliant analysis of the parallels and differences between King Herod’s time and our own.

A number of counterattacks by the Ukrainians, in some cases using reserve forces, have taken place along the line of contact. While reports are not yet complete, it appears that all the Ukrainian attempts to roll back Russian gains have failed, with the possible exception of Robotyne.

Meanwhile the Russians have either taken or will soon take a number of villages including  Ivaniska, Bilohorivka, Berdichev, Pobjeda and Novomikhailovka.

Politics as Lawfare

By El Gato Malo, BROWNSTONE                                      5 March 2024

There is a wonderful quote from noted scary fascist (back when fascism was still a vogue and “the coming thing”) Oscar Benavides who was president of Peru from 1933-39. it’s as apposite as ever today:

To my friends, everything; to my enemies, the law.

It really says it all, doesn’t it?

Israel Must Preempt Hezbollah

by Jonathan Spyer, JNS    March 5, 2024

https://www.meforum.org/65635/israel-must-preempt-hezbollah

The IDF has registered significant tactical successes in the fighting since Oct. 7. Yet, the strategic scoreboard currently favors Iran.

When I was resident in northern Iraq in the summer of 2019, an Iranian acquaintance told me that in understanding the regional strategy of his country, I should bear in mind that while “other nations will kill you with iron, the Iranians will kill you with cotton.” The phrase stayed with me. I later learned that it is a famous Persian expression. In the context in which we discussed it, my friend wanted me to grasp the subtle, patient and slow moving nature of Iranian strategy in the Middle East. He also wanted me not to confuse patience with an absence of lethal seriousness of purpose.
