Rafah crossing closed
Israel took over the Rafah Crossing between Gaza and Egypt last week, in order to make sure that Hamas could not smuggle in weapons through that route, and also to ensure that Hamas would not hijack aid shipments just after they came into Gaza. The Egyptians, however, displeased at the IDF’s move, decided to retaliate by preventing aid trucks from moving through the Rafah Crossing into Gaza altogether. What’s more, they rejected Israel’s request to let those aid trucks enter Gaza through the Kerem Shalom Crossing further north. During a government discussion, a draft for a defense budget supplement of 222 billion shekels for the next four years was put on the table. Smotrich wondered aloud how the IDF managed to quickly prepare, under fire, a budget proposal that incorporates the lessons of the war with future needs. The IDF representatives in the discussion were offended: “You don’t trust us?”
Peloni: Mike provides some much needed clarity to push back against Gantz’ notion an international alliance will be either interested or able to face down the remaining elements of Hamas left in the wake of any abandonment of the war to destroy them. Gantz’ proposal to alter the war aims is utter folly founded upon the aspirations of an Iranian allied US administration which has no interest in securing Israel’s future, but which has all along been greatly interested in securing Iran’s future and that of its proxies. Gantz must leave the govt, and allow an Israeli centric policy, and not America centric one, to guide the future of the Jewish state.

There was a comical aspect to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s press appearance on Wednesday night. With his best imitation of Patton, he sternly demanded that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu abandon Israel’s war aims and instead adopt America’s, which happen to be Hamas’s war aims as well.
“I urge Prime Minister Netanyahu to make this decision and proclaim that Israel will not impose civil rule on the Gaza Strip; that there will be no Israel military government in the Gaza Strip. And that a [Palestinian] civilian alternative to Hamas in Gaza will be advanced immediately.”
Despite the recent UN resolution’s artificial and ineffectual symbolic and cosmetic aspects, the overall result of the exercise is nevertheless grave and unfortunate. Opinion.

I have to admit, this was the favored line of thinking over the past few weeks as the Biden administration sabotaged every Israeli move, and the Egyptians blustered and threatened.
