World War II broke out on September 1, 1939, with Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland. The conflict left Europe in ruins, cost millions of lives, and proved a most crushing blow to the Jews of Europe, unspeakable and unfathomable in scope.

Hours after the invasion, far away from battle, a cargo ship with 1,400 illegal Jewish refuges – the Tiger Hill – ran ashore off Tel Aviv. As the British Mandate authorities trained their searchlights on the ship, the Jews sang “Hatikvah” in defiance.

In the dead of winter, thousands of Canadians have been streaming into Ottawa, led by a massive convoy of truckers protesting draconian Covid mandates that have harmed their ability to earn a living. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau refused to meet with the protesters and slammed the freedom convoy as “an insult to memory and truth.” Fils Justin thus invites memories of himself and Trudeau père. 

As Edward Gibbon noted, hereditary rule is always the most risible, and apart from the connection with his father, Canadians would be hard pressed to find any merit in Justin Trudeau his own self. He has no scholarly achievement, no record of publication, and no experience running business. To adapt a phrase from Ray Bradbury’s afterword to Fahrenheit 451,  Justin Trudeau has never said anything that would make a sub-moron’s mouth twitch. On the other hand, he does have a comic side.

Opposition Leader Benjamin Netanyahu said in private conversations this week that he believes the odds of the current government falling during the next winter session are “certainly reasonable.” If immediately after the government’s formation the Likud Secretariat, with broad support, passed legislation stipulating that party defectors are indefinitely barred from returning – now a similar attempt to pass the clause through the Likud Central Committee is encountering problems.

MK Miri Regev is trying to push the initiative with all her might, but Netanyahu, Israel Katz, Haim Katz, and other senior party members are doing all they can to block it, and for good reason. They understand that such laws will only strengthen the government, not the opposite. Recent developments have spurred Likud’s upper echelon to care more about the party’s doors remaining open. The Secretariat’s decision, which targeted Gideon Sa’ar, Ze’ev Elkin, and Yifat Shasha-Biton, is easy to reverse, unlike a decision passed by the Central Committee.

The United Arab Emirates, Israel’s central partner in the Gulf, sees Iran as the main threat to its national security. The challenge that Iran poses to the UAE includes the threats, either direct or by means of proxies, of a kinetic attack on strategic targets, the potential use of subversion and terror, and control over Emirati territory. The UAE has reacted by developing a range of defensive responses, while simultaneously seeking to maintain open economic and diplomatic ties with Iran as much as possible. The UAE’s current efforts to draw closer to Iran are also designed to balance its image as an intelligence and operational aide of Israel. Israel must consider that the UAE role in the so-called front against Iran might change, particularly in view of emerging cracks in the front, and particularly if and when there is a nuclear agreement between Iran and the world powers.

Positive momentum in Israel’s regional standing is underway as can be seen by the visits of senior Israeli officials – among them its previous and present prime minister, and the foreign and defense ministers – to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain and Morocco, and the visit of a military delegation to Sudan, as well as a military flight over Saudi airspace.

Following the signing of the Abraham Accords, legitimization of ties between Israel and Arab states have moved from being barely justifiable and only in exchange for the return of lands captured in 1967 to the opposite pole of close defense ties and use of Israel’s strength, credibility and capability as an important component of Arab national security. The ties and normalization that were offered in the “Arab peace initiative” as a reward for the territorial and political dictates of the Arabs and the Palestinians are now seen as an Israeli contribution to the defense and welfare of the Arabs.

If it is accurate, it is another sign that the Bidenites are willing to violate both international law and an act passed by Congress, in order to satisfy the Palestinians, in the hope that this will make them more amenable to negotiating with Israel. Up until a few short months ago, claims that Netanyahu’s trial was part of a conspiracy seemed far-fetched. Not anymore. Since the very outset of the trial, Israelis’ jaws have been dropped almost daily due to the errors—let’s call them that—that have emerged from it. The accumulation of these errors pins numerous question marks over the system that incoming Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara will start managing next week.

The Biden administration has restored a sanctions waiver to Iran, a senior State Department official said, as indirect talks between Washington and Tehran on returning to the 2015 nuclear agreement entered the final stretch.

The waiver, which was rescinded by the Trump administration in May 2020, had allowed Russian, Chinese and European companies to carry out non-proliferation work at Iranian nuclear sites.
