Of all the “developed” countries in the world with some pretensions to be democracies, Israel demonstrates the least understanding of its national interests, and most often takes actions and behaves in ways directly contrary to its national interests. The only countries whose governments behave in as irrational behavior are artificial countries created by the the former colonial powers, divided into numerous tribes or ethnic groups with no sense whatever of being part of the same nation. Countries like Mali or Chad. Israel is not like that. It was created by the Jewish people, making use of sophisticated organizations created by the Zionist movement. One people has been its dominant majority since its inception, and it was deliberately created for their benefit and to enable their survival. Its leaders have been overwhelmingly highly educated men and women of recent European or American ancestry, fully equipped to provide sophisticated leadership like the leaders of the Western democracies? So why does our government make as erratic and irrational decisions as those of Mali, Chad, Burkina Faso, South Sudan, etc.? I don’t get it. Can anyone help me to anser this question?
I still think it was absolute madness for Israel to go to war with the Jelani regime. Israel is already at war with Hezbollah in Syria, Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis in Yemen, and of course Iran. Do we really need another enemy? Jelani had been making friendly noises to Israel, meeting with Israeli diplomats, and even talking about possibly joining the Abraham accords. Some low key involvement by perhaps sending some Druze IDF commandos quitly into the Druze regions of Syria to protect their coreligionists might have made sense, hopely without opnly wearing IDF uniforms. But bombing Jelani’s presidential palace? Sheer madness. Now it is more or less inevitable that Hezbollah and the Iranians will move back into Syria, and we will have gained absolutely nothing from Jelani’s expulsion of them.
