  1. @ joydbrower:

Joy, I never heard your reason before, although I’ve read it in Torah or in excerpts from Torah, and of course, that very same phrase is often used in books. But….

My bobba-my grandmother- who lived at least 35 or more years in a shtetl before she come to Ireland where she passed away age 92, told me, aged close to 90 then, when I saw her take her sheitl off for a moment during a summer heat wave, that the women found that sheitls when they were pulled off during a pogrom, without their hair they would look unnatural and repulsive and the Cossaken would go on elsewhere..

She said it was normally shaven down to the scalp.

She didn’t believe that women wanting to disguise their beautiful hair by wearing a just as beautiful wig, Why not just cover it up with a large scarf or a tight fitting hat that covered the hair completely. If hair is too beautiful to reveal what about beautiful faces.

This can get out of control.

My grandmother was a descendant of a long line of Latvian Rabonim, 7 generations; with 6 brothers rabbis as was her father, and she herself , a very learned woman, who, when living on Ireland, was constantly visited by a stream of people who asked for her wisdom and opinions….even though ther was a “Chief” Rabbi.

  2. @ david melech: I was thinking the very same thing; Namely, Orthodox Jewish women wear a wig to cover their OWN hair and, of course, for the same reason that Muslim women do: Namely, a woman’s hair is supposed to be her “crowning glory” and should only be seen by her immediate (or even cousin-related) family. But the difference, of course, is that it’s NOT to make the woman unattractive, but to keep that “tempting” “crowning glory” from the eyes of male strangers who might well be aroused. And at least they’re not insisting that she look plain & dowdy! In other words, makeup is still very much allowed among the Orthodox Jewish women! But I agree with Spencer: Namely, it presumes that men are so weak (huh?!?) that they can’t exercise decent, adult, grown-up good behavior and common courtesy! That’s crazy!

  3. 1st sarSOUR was born in u s a. therefore a u s citizen, if she relinquish that then what is she?
Going on about head covering Orthodox JEWISH Women cover their hair generally with a wig usually making them more attractive. The only time i saw 3 females cover their hair to not only become more unattractive was on a flight out of ISRAEL they had the same style of hat that drew attention as they looked ridicules. The 3 stooges no doubt complained about the competition.

  4. The video was cut short exactly when the preliminary exchanges had finished and it was getting to the INTERESTING part, So we neither saw a mop, not the floor. A pity. !
