Romney: If You Want Peace With Iran, Prepare for War

Alana Goodman, Commentary

In preparation for the Republican foreign policy debate later this month, Mitt Romney has been highlighting his plans for dealing with Iran’s nuclear ambitions. On Tuesday he released an outline of his strategy, and he goes into more detail in a Wall Street Journal column today:

I want peace. And if I am president, I will begin by imposing a new round of far tougher economic sanctions on Iran. I will do this together with the world if we can, unilaterally if we must. I will speak out forcefully on behalf of Iranian dissidents. I will back up American diplomacy with a very real and very credible military option. I will restore the regular presence of aircraft carrier groups in the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf region simultaneously. I will increase military assistance to Israel and coordination with all of our allies in the region. These actions will send an unequivocal signal to Iran that the United States, acting in concert with allies, will never permit Iran to obtain nuclear weapons.

Romney doesn’t pull any punches against Obama, blasting him for inaction on the Iranian bomb plot, the initial attempts at diplomacy, and the failure of sanctions. “Barack Obama has shredded his own credibility on Iran, conveyed an image of American weakness, and increased the prospect of a cascade of nuclear proliferation in the unstable Middle East,” he writes.

Romney’s positions on Iran are likely to resonate with voters. Americans support military action to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, 50 percent to 44 percent, according to an Anti-Defamation League poll released today.

  1. I have supported Cain from the beginning but he made me nervous when he said that God told him to run for President. I am not at all comfortable when a politician claims to have gotten political advice in this manner.

  2. Cain rings true. I listened to him on the radio for a couple of years when he was a fill-in host and liked him a lot then. Still do. IMO his accusers are money grubbers. (BTW I’m female.) Where were they before he became a credible threat to the establishment? Funny how they are connected to Chicago. The blonde was pathetic. Did she really say she just got her hair done??? Until his accusers pass lie detector tests, I’m not interested in their allegations. Herman should sue them for defamation. Fame and/or fortune can be huge incentives for unscrupulous women.
Cain has a Bachelor’s in mathematics and a Master’s in computer science, was a syndicated columnist, radio host and a Navy ballistics analyst. His business success speaks for itself. He has accomplished far more than Barry O ever will. Herman walks his talk. I’m not sure America deserves him. If Cain is dumb, then Obogus, the Munchausen President, must be a turnip. Of course when the teleprompter is AWOL, a turnip has been known to appear.
And who cares about the “debates”? Let the candidates lay out their philosophies and if anything challenge each other. The media hacks are jokes. The whole system is designed to sell TV advertising time based on ratings. Cain’s instincts served him well when he sat down with Newt and presented his values and goals. Again, I’m not sure America deserves Herman Cain and I know he doesn’t deserve the abuse inflicted upon him by some Americans. Mr. Cain, if you ever want to relocate then, Bienvenue au Canada!

  3. Romney’s plan is incompetent at best–he hasn’t a clue as to what should be done–and if he had the chance he would makes things worse much like his predecessors!

    A slip among republicans.

Poll Date Sample Obama (D) Romney (R) Spread
    RCP Average 10/7 – 11/10 — 46.1 44.4 Obama +1.7

Poll Date Sample Obama (D) Cain (R) Spread
    RCP Average 10/7 – 11/8 — 49.1 41.1 Obama +8.0

Cain does not perform as well as Romney against Obama

Poll Date Sample Obama (D) Paul (R) Spread
    RCP Average 8/17 – 10/29 — 47.6 41.6 Obama +6.0

Ron Paul does better than Cain and worse than Romney; but then, he hasn’t been through the media gauntlet like the others. All the other Republican hopefuls perform worse than Cain.

Mr. “Generic Republican” beats Obama, as has been the case for months; this time, by 0.2%. That’s because most Republicans, like Arnold-Harris and I, will vote Republican even if they nominate a cross between a slug and a fish.

P.S. Romney does not sound very tough on Iran. He talks as though Iran will not be attacked before he’s President, which shows what a dreamer he is.

  5. Herman Cain is said to be a man of honor. That goes a long way with me.

I am not upset that he is in the middle of a sex scandal. I am upset at the way he is handling it. I would have thought that he would be more used to handling crisis.

I hope that he gets his act together. All the criticisms so far, that he is not a politician, he has never held public office etc., are pluses as far as I am concerned. Unfortunately, a president has to handle one crisis after another. Herman Cain needs to get good at it. It is only going to get worse.

Bottom line is I would rather have an inexperienced man with a good heart, rather then a man with an evil heart, no matter how good he sounds. Right now, these are my choices. Not ideal for the most important job in the world. But then, nothing in politics is ideal.

  6. I do not care what Romney has to say. I will not vote for him. He is exactly the kind of entrenched politician that the Tea Party and conservatives do not want.

If he ends up getting elected as our next president, then I am not only leaving the United States, but I will leave this solar system entirely, and try my luck with one of our neighbors. I am really tired of the choices being worse and worser.

  7. Sol, enough of your left wing b— sh–. You might be right that Cain will not be the next President; however, he is very well liked for his fortitude in the middle of “gossip”. When the next preisdent is elected and it will be a Republican, Cain will get a Secretarial position.

  8. In the GOP field, Bozo Cain would lose all 50 states. He would get zero female votes, zero Hispanic votes, zero working people’s votes, and zero swing votes. He’d be lucky to win 10%. He’s the stupidest, ugliest piece of dung that has even thrown his hat in the ring. Romney could win.

  9. I sopport Herman Cain for the Republican presidential nomination. I could not care less about the various allegations brought against him by this or that former employee of the restaurant association. Most of the hard-core Republicans think the same way. If any of that were important to these women, they should have made their complaints to their local district attorneys and fought it out in court, rather than taking cash settlements from the association. In any case, sexual harassment claims have become a growth industry among legal shysters who make their living from this stuff.

In any case, as long as Cain stands for election, I will vote for him and help talk up his campaign.

What does this have to do with Israel? Probably not a hell of a lot. But I don’t think Americans should elect a US president merely on the merits or lack of them regarding his foreign policies as affecting any particular country. In any case, my wife and I did not vote for Barack Hussein Obama Jr for president in 2008, and there are no circumstances whatsoever that would bring us to vote for him to stay in office next year.

In the meantime, spend less time worrying about who runs the United States of America, and concentrate more on getting a better and properly nationalist government for Medinat Yisrael.

  10. Romney was not my first choice to be nominee but he is increasingly looking better to me. I can certainly live with Romney as the candidate and also he is the one most likely able to defeat Obama.

  11. By doing virtually nothing, Obogus, the Munchausen president, seems to be doing everything he can to help Iran. More sleight of hand. Tough talk is just that, talk and Romney seems to want to continue the “conversation”. Sanctions? Is he kidding? Actions speak louder than words! Time is of the essence. Israel may have to take steps to save herself and the rest of us ditherers. Am Yisrael Chai!
