Peloni: An interesting revelation comes hours after Trump’s Energy Secretary, Chris Wright, formally signs the agreement with Saudi Arabia supporting their development of a ‘civilian’ nuclear program. Amid claims by Sec. State Marco Rubio that the program will not lead to a military application with a nuclear bomb spin-off, Trump announced on Thursday via Trump Social that deal is now contingent upon Saudi joining of the Abraham Accords.
Notably, the Abraham Accords made many things possible which were previously not even likely, but the one context on which the AA was based, ie ignoring the primacy of the Israeli-Palestinian settlement, has formed the entire basis of MBS’ objections to joining the AA.
Additionally, the basis of any peace with any Arab nation should require a stated demand by Israel’s peace partners to accept Israel’s right to its ancestral lands as recognized in international law and described by the San Remo Declaration. Instead of this obviously fundamental foundation on which any peace might be based, the AA has sidestepped this issue, and the result has seen Israel’s AA partners bringing Israel before the UN Security Council for condemnations after one of its ministers did nothing more controversial than to visit the Temple Mount which is the most sacred Holy site in all of Judaism.
Nonetheless, the bargain that Trump offered MBS with the temptation of an endless source of cheap energy should come at some price to the Kingdom. Yet, if we are to be honest and comprehensive in our assessment of the Trump-Saudi deal, it should similarly be recalled that the Kingdom has no real need for a near endless source of cheap energy as it is one of the most energy endowed nations on the planet, and if Rubio’s assertions that the US-Saudi deal will not allow any opportunity for the development of a nuclear bomb, what is the real benefit for MBS to be so engaged in this prospective deal as he stands as the largest producer of oil in the world besides the US. The obvious conclusion is that he does intend to develop a nuclear weapons program, and sooner or later, due to American corruption or flagging interest in safeguarding any safeguards in this deal, he will probably be successful in this aim.
