Jimmy Carter never should have given away our Canal. An estimated 5,609 Americans died while building the Panama Canal between 1904 and 1914. It belongs to us. In 1977, Carter and Panamanian Dictator Omar Torrijos signed the Panama Canal Treaties and gave OUR PANAMA CANAL to Panama. I remember being horrified that this had happened and many of my friends and their parents were outraged. The Canal still comes up in conversation as one of the worst things Carter did in his four years as president. Remember too that home mortgages reached 12.5% and I laugh when someone complains about 6 or 7% today. We sure made a ton on CDs back then.
I lived in Panama for a few years.
Their govt and the people can be bought by anyone with money. And, in my opinion only, very few Sth American Govts; would chose China over the US when the crunch arrives.
I agree with Adam D. There are better ways for Trump to gain benefits from Panama, or the canal itself, than acting like an imperial power and picking a fight with the Panamanians. South Americans resent the US for pushing them around. Why give them an excuse to rally against us now; especially, when China and Iran have been courting them successfully for years?
This is a really stupid idea. Why make an enemy of Panama, one the few friiends the U.S. still retains in Latin America? Panama never recognized U.S. sovereignty over the canal, although it granted the U.S. a one hundred year lease of it. I believe that the U.S. still has a military base in Panama. It is reasonable that the Panamanians have sovereignty over a canal that runs through the middle of their country. Why fish in troubled waters?
The US is the legal owner of Panama, because of a nine-plus-dashed line on the map.

Who paid for building the canal??? The French failed, as always, and the US came in to save the day!
Panama has and always will be a puppet state.

Could you, please, retrieve my comment in Chit Chat, the latest version if there is more than one.
It’s been a couple of hours since it disappeared.
Thanks.
Trump doubles down on the Panama Canal by posting “Welcome to the United States Canal”
@Adam D
I suspect this is a move to counter China’s growing footprint in Latin America. Maybe he’s thinking of some 21st century Monroe Doctrine?
