Why the Left Has to Suppress Free Speech

By Dennis Prager

Let us begin with this fact: The left always suppresses speech. Since Vladimir Lenin and the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1917, there has been no example of the left in control and not crushing dissent.

That is one of the important differences between liberal and left: Liberalism and liberals believe in free speech. (The present leftist threat to freedom in America, the greatest threat to freedom in American history, is made possible because liberals think they have more to fear from conservatives than from the left. Liberals do not understand that the left regards liberals as their useful idiots.)

The left controls universities. There is little or no dissent allowed at universities.

The left controls nearly every “news” medium. There is little or no dissent in the mainstream media — not in the “news” sections and not in the opinion sections.

The left controls Hollywood. No dissent is allowed in Hollywood.

That is why we have “cancel culture” — the silencing and firing of anyone who publicly dissents from the left, and even “publicly” is no longer necessary. The National Association of Realtors has just announced that if you express dissenting views (on race, especially) in private, you may be fined and lose your membership in the organization — which effectively ends your career as a realtor.

So, we return to the opening question: Why does the left need to crush all dissent? This is a question made all the more stark because there is no parallel on the right: Conservatives do not shut down dissent or debate.

The answer, though the left will not acknowledge it, is the left fears dissent. And they do so for good reason. Leftism is essentially a giant balloon filled with nothing but hot air. Therefore, no matter how big the balloon — the Democratic Party, The New York Times, Yale University — all it takes is a mere pin to burst it.

Leftism is venerated by intellectuals. But there is little intellectual substance to leftism. It is a combination of doctrine and emotion. The proof? Those with intellectual depth do not stifle dissent; they welcome it.

That is why universities are so opposed to conservatives coming to speak on campus. One articulate conservative can undo years of left-wing indoctrination in a one-hour talk or Q and A. I know this from personal experience on campuses. You can, too. Watch the speeches given by any conservatives allowed to speak on a campus — many of these talks are still on YouTube — and you will see large halls filled with students yearning to hear something other than left-wing pablum. Look at their faces, filled with rapt attention to ideas they never heard that are clearly having an impact. Universities are entirely right to fear our coming to speak. We come with the pin that bursts their $50,000-a-year balloon.

That is also why it is so hard to get any of them to debate any of us. In 35 years of radio, I have never mistreated or bullied a guest. I was unfailingly polite to an icon of the left, Howard Zinn, the America-hating author of the America-hating “A People’s History of the United States.” I even invited a UCLA political science professor and violinist, one of seven members of the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra who refused to play when I conducted the orchestra in a Joseph Haydn symphony in the Disney Concert Hall — solely because I’m a conservative. Despite his public letter, in which he accused me of holding “horribly bigoted positions” and wrote, “Please urge your friends to not attend this concert, which helps normalize bigotry in our community,” I nevertheless invited him on my national radio show. He agreed. I had him in studio for an entire hour and treated him and his wife (who accompanied him) with great respect, despite my contempt for his false accusations and his advocacy of the cancel culture. Every American should hear that hour.

Unfortunately for the emotional and intellectual health of our society, he, Zinn and a few others were anomalies. Of the 100 or so left-wing authors, professors and columnists invited to appear on my show, almost none has responded in the affirmative. They prefer NPR, where they are never challenged.

The opposite, however, is not true: Every conservative intellectual I know says yes to every one of the (very few) left-wing invitations we receive. Of course, we are almost never invited. We regularly invite leftists. Leftists almost never invite us. They claim it’s because we are not up to their intellectual level and they have no desire to waste their time. One would think that the opportunity to publicly show how vapid we conservatives really are would be too good to pass up.

Leftists do not debate us or appear as guests on our shows and prevent us from speaking whenever possible, because they (correctly) fear conservatives. Race-baiters such as Ibram X. Kendi or Ta-Nehisi Coates or “White Fragility” author Robin DiAngelo would never debate Larry Elder, for example. Why won’t they? Because they would be shown to be the intellectually shallow purveyors of hate they are. Deep down, they know it. Larry Elder is one of many conservative black intellectuals who left-wing blacks (and whites) refuse to debate.

Now you know why the left suppresses free speech: because they have to. If there is free speech, there is dissent. And if there is dissent, there is no more left.

The Freedom To Think . . . Like Us

What happens when the “last best hope on earth” is gone?Where do people go after the United States of America becomes just another totalitarian government with limited personal freedoms?

Freedom of speech, once the cornerstone of our nation, is on its way out thanks to politically correct policies and radical leftist agendas which have shut down true free speech and independent thought.

The emergence of internet social media sites as the primary means of communication has sped up the process. It’s called “cancel culture.” Go contrary to popular leftist dogma and you will be shunned, shamed, and possibly lose your job. People might find out where you live and target you and your family. On FaceBook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and other social media sites you have the freedom to express your ideasÉ. as long as they conform to the leftist ideology of the web masters.

Did you vote for President Trump? If so, you are labeled racist, crazy, and a danger to society. You do not deserve to be employed, your views shouldn’t be heard, and you must be shut off from participating in normal society. Actually, you should be imprisoned.

Since the presidential election President Trump has completely disappeared from the American scene. He has been vanquished from social media sites, for all intents and purposes he has lost his ability to freely communicate publicly. He has been banned from Twitter, once his best way of communication to the public. Television networks and other news media only cover him to ridicule him, they will not allow him to speak his mind. Businesses who once worked so well with him have cut him off. The left will not rest until they have completely and forevermore destroyed the man.

But this isn’t only about President Trump, it’s about everyone who supported him and his policies. President Trump is only the poster boy for all Americans who value individualism, freedom, and the traditional American ideal that anyone can make it in this country. The American dream that with proper education, hard work, and perseverance every person has a shot at success. This way of thinking has been completely dismissed in today’s educational system and elite circles.

It is no longer a good value to believe in rugged self-reliance, now it is all about group identity. Tribalism has replaced individualism. To turn Martin Luther King’s words upside-down, it is no longer about the content of your character, it is all about the color of your skin. Or your gender preference, or your biological sex. To believe otherwise clearly means you are a racist, homophobic, misogynistic goon. And no, you may not use our social media websites!

The well-known phrase attributed to English writer Evelyn Beatrice Hall, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,”Êhas been used for decades as a way of illustrating the principle of freedom of speech. But you’ll notice that you don’t hear anyone saying that anymore. The thinking now is, “If you say something that I disapprove of, you are engaging in hate speech and therefore you must be silenced.”

In George Orwell’s prophetic sci-fi novel, “Nineteen Eighty-Four” one of the ministries of the dystopian government in the book is called “The Ministry of Truth.” This ministry is involved with news media, entertainment, the fine arts and educational books. Its purpose is to rewrite history to change the facts to fit Party doctrine for propaganda effect.

Flash forward to 2021 America. So-called experts have been urging President Biden to appoint a task force headed up by a “reality czar” to focus on dictating and mitigating the dissemination of certain types of information. On February 2nd an article in the New York Times called for experts who could “help fix our truth-challenged information ecosystem” filled with “hoaxes, lies and collective delusions” created by people such as QAnon supporters, One America News watchers, and YouTube conspiracy theorists.

One of the solutions proposed is for the Biden administration to take action following the deadly Jan. 6 mob riot at the U.S. Capitol to establish a “truth commission” to investigate the siege. Toto, I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.

Welcome to Orwellland. You can live a relatively nice little existence here as long as you only talk in approved language, go along with the approved programs, believe only what the elite majority tells you, and never, never question authority. Government will take care of all your necessaries; your schooling, your health, your job, your children’s welfare, your pension, and your final days. Remember it’s all about group identity not individualism. And the Marxist authoritarians control it all.

To paraphrase another George Orwell book, “Animal Farm,” “Everyone is equal but some are more equal than others.” Clearly, we are not all equal when it comes to expressing our ideas in public.

  1. This below is from the Epoch Times. It demonstrates the horrible blacklisting and “cancelling”that is going on in this country. Two lawyers, one of them a distinguished civil rights attorney, being persecuted for acting as defense attorneys for a former President of the United States. In such an environment, how can any defendant with dissident political views (dissident from the point of view of the ruling DP) get a fair trial? What lawyer will be courageous enough to defend him?

Trump Impeachment Attorney Canceled by Law School, Civil Rights Law Group

An attorney who represented President Donald Trump during the recent impeachment trial says a law school canceled a civil rights law course he was going to teach and he was suspended from a civil rights lawyer email discussion list.

“I was hoping to teach a civil rights course at a law school in the fall. We’ve been in talks about it, kind of planning it out. I wrote to them and I said, ‘I want you to know, I’m gonna be representing Donald Trump in the impeachment case. I don’t know if that impacts on your decision at all,’” David Schoen, one of the three attorneys who argued before the Senate, told The Epoch Times.

“And they said, you know, they appreciated my writing and, frankly, it would make some students and faculty uncomfortable, so I couldn’t do it.

“That was sad for me because I really want to go more and more into teaching. I like doing that,” Schoen said.

Schoen, an Alabama-based lawyer recognized for his civil rights litigation, declined to name the school that canceled his course. He likewise declined to name the legal organization behind the email list that suspended him.

“They actually spent 48 hours discussing this with their board and so on. And they decided that they needed to suspend me from the list,” Schoen said. “It’s a very important one to me. It’s very prominent civil rights lawyers and fine people.”

Schoen delivered an impassioned argument on the first day of the trial for why the Senate didn’t have jurisdiction to try a former president. At the conclusion of his remarks, he appeared to be choking back tears as he read an 1849 poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow titled “The Building of the Ship.” Schoen told The Epoch Times that he chose the poem—and the quote from President Abraham Lincoln that preceded it—because he views the days of Lincoln as the closest parallel to the current division in the United States.

“I think we’re in a very perilous, divided time. The election itself showed that, but I think all of the rhetoric shows it also,” Schoen said.

Schoen brought his children, aged 15 to 25, into the process of preparing his impeachment trial remarks. His daughter was the one to suggest using Longfellow’s poem.

“I wrote my remarks myself. I wanted to share them with the kids and I wanted their feedback. They were very helpful to me. One of my sons was with me at the impeachment trial,” Schoen said.

Schoen isn’t the only attorney facing repercussions for defending the president.

Attorney Michael van der Veen said vandals broke the windows in his home and defaced the house with graffiti. Van der Veen has had to move his children to a secret location and hire armed guards to protect his home and workplace.

Schoen said that he’s used to threats after decades of practicing civil rights law.

“When I lived in Alabama, I lived behind an electric fence with two German shepherds and I had to carry a gun every place I went. I faced many threats for different kinds of reasons, over the years. But if you let that stop you, I suppose you’re in the wrong business,” Schoen said.

Schoen received the Pro Bono Publico Award from the American Bar Association (ABA) in 1995 for his civil rights work. The ABA handbook says (pdf) he was “recognized for his enormous contribution to bringing about change in schools, prisons, jails, foster care, police departments, and election ballot access in the South.”

The Senate acquitted Trump of the charge that he incited the mob that breached the Capitol on Jan. 6. Schoen said he spoke to the president after the acquittal. He said the president was “very upbeat, very gratified.”

During the trial, Schoen spoke to Trump two or three times per day. He said the president was always “very gracious,” “very supportive,” and “very much appreciated the presentations I made.”

Days after the acquittal, a top House Democrat and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) sued Trump over the Capitol breach, accusing the president of planning a conspiracy to attack the Capitol. Schoen said the lawsuit is “political theater.”

“I don’t think there’s any merit to it. I think it’s an abuse of the statute that it’s based on. And I think it’s just going to lead to further divisiveness,” he said.
