Why U.S. Intervention in Syria Is Not in Israel and America’s Best Interest

Secure America Now

Israel’s Prime Minister and Defense Minister have publicly stated that they are prepared to meet possible spillover from the civil war in Syria, but effecting the outcome of the war is not Israel’s concern.

This position is in sharp contrast to inside the Beltway supporters of Israel, who are vigorously supporting American military intervention in Syria. They argue (in part) that military action will help Israel by sending a message to Iran that America will not stand by while Weapons of Mass Destruction are used. By implication, they argue, this will help deter Iran’s nuclear program.

Secure America Now stands with Israel’s Prime Minister when he expressed sympathy for victims in Syria, but (once again) called on the world to take serious action against Iran now. We think that this is sound advice for Israel, the United States, and the rest of world.

But we are sad to report that during the Syria debate, the Obama Administration agreed to suspend the sanction that prohibited the European Union from buying oil from Iran. The decision to lift this sanction sends Iran a message that we are not serious about stopping their nuclear program.

We oppose getting involved in Syria because both sides in the Civil War are enemies of the United States. Despite an aggressive misinformation campaign, the rebels are not pro-American. They are dominated by Jihadists who, if they got control of the chemical weapons, would disperse them to terrorists.

We also fear for the Christian community in Syria that has come under repeated attacks by the rebels, even though they are not fighting in the Civil War. This community and Christians around the world do not want America to militarily strike Syria.

We believe Israel and America have one overriding common goal — stopping Iran from attain nuclear weapons. Using up political capital in the U.S. to “send a message to Assad,” deflects attention away from the objective of stopping Iran.
